i'm addicted to this piece now. I love Reich anyway but this is one of his best percussion pieces. What a great performance. How these guys play their lines without getting distracted by what everyone else is doing, i don't know...but then they're pros. Robin Engelman and John Wyre (3rd and 4th from left) seem to be in a trance. Towards the end it sounds like birds or crickets chirping. Amazing stuff.
i belive the 5th will be the hardest part because if he enter`s wrong he will drag the hard work of the group and they have to start again , about the 1st guy he got a nerve of steel .
@9990999jacob beauty is in the ear of the beholder. i think this music is engaging and exciting. maybe not "pretty" but i don't find it "terrible" either
I played all the parts. Part one is the easiest because it is the same thing, and it is easy to memorize. Only hard thing about it is being able to keep a steady pulse. But, if you are a good musician, you should be fine with it. The rest of the parts are the hardest because idealistically, you are expected to keep a steady pulse, it is more syncopated, and it is a little harder to memorize. Don't give me an attitude on youtube. That is the most childish thing you can do, Dave.
I find it very hard to get my brain around this piece, so to say. It is amazingly complex but so delightful to listen to. My ears are buzzing during this whole performance, (in a good way, of course).
I'm playing it with my percussion ensemble group, and honestly, we found part 5 really hard... part three was the easiest, and part 1 is hard mostly because you're playing the SAME THING throughout the entire thing... And you have to keep the tempo up through the whole storm of the piece. It's amazing when done well though, and these guys are REALLY good.
@Serendepity apparently, ours is different. we are going to perform it tonight, but everyone can't seem to get the time signature changes right, and... part 3 seems to be the most dificult part there.
@artyzach Yeah, it took our group a long while to get it down, at least half a school year. It's really worth it to work the transitions between time signatures for a good long time, and then link it together. That's what we did and it really helped our playing. And part 2 has to be so incredibly strong, they could play it backwards in their sleep.
Good luck, though! It's incredibly rewarding to do it on stage!
@Serendepity I did this in high school too, and I remember the guy playing part 2 just closing his eyes, leaning his head back, and getting into the zone. It looks easy, but it takes incredible focus. I think I was part 5 if I remember right. Might have been 3 though.
It's very easy :P

The players are the Toronto-based percussion quintet, NEXUS - (L. to R.) Bob Becker, Russell Hartenberger, Robin Engelman, John Wyre and Bill Cahn.
Bob and Russell are regular players with Steve Reich's ensemble. NEXUS formed in 1971 and is still going strong with worldwide performances.

@kgtwin2 Don't you dare talk down to me. Get off your pedestal and stop looking down at the rest of the world.
davew0927 1 year ago
@kgtwin2 you might say that, but it may also be difficult in a way, the pulse has to be kept at a steady beat, and at such a fast tempo.
artyzach 1 year ago
I said that was the only difficult part, lol. Did you even read the whole post?
