  • The only abuse here has been done to our eyes with all the camera shaking, yeesh get a tripod!

  • I'm a lifelong horse owner and lover. Horses DO NOT like moving in the rain. When left to their own devices with a little freedom they will turn away from the rain and wind, tuck their tails down, waiting out the storm; instinctively disliking a situation in which they are compromised, cannot see clearly or have to walk on uncertain or slippery ground. They're a prey animal who do not like anything unexpected. NYC is a hard, near impossible environment that must be monitored very carefully.

  • @theodorodepangrazia ~ Who cares these horses are for our enjoyment and that is it !!

  • wow wish I had a horse that trained he's wonderful. sometimes a person and horse have to be put through perials to have great strengh and merrit

  • NYC is too congested, period. Too many cars, trucks, construction - simply too busy for a relaxing ride in a carriage. It works in other smaller cities, but not in NYC. Or, perhaps it can be tried in Central Park where there is no traffic and is more fitting to the landscape.

  • Well, i think it's cruel to put those horses into that horrible traffic in NYC, but come on.... please don't do the same shit like PETA and stop making it ridiculous! A horse that hase to come along with that horrible traffic, you can say that it is cruel... but a horse in the rain is abuse in your opinion?! what the hell is wrong with u? humanization is the cruelest thing you can do. Please stay by plausible arguments, because if you don't do, nobody will trust your organisation.

  • I have seen the horse slipped in the rain in NYC due to the congested traffic and all the potholes. It is especially dangerous to have horses in traffic during adverse weather. I have seen wild horses in the rain and it is not the same as a horse bound to a carriage in congested traffic in the rain. It is unsafe and cruel. Also the drivers leave the horse standing on the hackline in filthy standing water. That is just wrong. peace

  • I agree with you,but i think you should make clearer for other ppl what y think and how y feel when you see this.Of course,y know what you want to show.but y have to make it clearer.instead saying those horses have to work in the rain,y could say those horses have to work in horrible traffic on slippery road cause by rain.If y don't stay by the facts it could be,that some ppl don't take y serious.i don't want to annoy y.sometimes can't write what i want because my english isn't best xD

  • The horse looks happy even if its rainy. Remember, horses in the wild have no shelter except for trees. I do admit that the horses could be hit by speeding cars but if the drivers of the cars watched where they were going you wouldn't have worry about them. I do also believe that the horses should be shod when they work on pavement most of the time.

  • but these horses are not in the wild, they are side by side with traffic including trucks, yellow cabs, buses, etc. It is dangerous for the horses as well as the public. if a car skids in the rain and the horses spooked then it is another accident. Also these horses work on hard pavement and exposed to all that fumes. these horses are deprived of an natural life and are kept in horrible stalls and have no mandatory retirement home. not to mention they are worked sometimes with no breaks

  • I would have to agree with rocketbarrels. Most working animals love their jobs. Have you ever seen a Huskey just before he is hooked up to the sled, they go crazy. I can't believe that a hoarse would rather be back at the barn with no visual, mental or physical stimulus. It's raining out, so what, the rain isn't cold. There are people walking down the street in shorts and T-shirts. We are also exposed to all the fumes of the cars. This hoarse is only pulling two people.

  • aww boo hoo poor us for having to live in a place where we don't want to be. Wish someone could try and help us.

  • Poor horse! He must be shivering in the heavy rain. These drivers show absolutely NO regard for the animal's welfare.

  • These Horse's Must Get Sick, In This Type Of Weather....It sound's Like It's Pouring Bucket's...

    BAN THIS BUSINESS......

Most Of These Driver's Are Probably IIegal's....

  • yes but these horses in the midst of traffic, A big difference.

  • Horses in the rain isn't bad.. if it's in the country. City roads become slippery and dangerous for a horses hooves (unless they take precautions to prevent this). Rain might also ruin the carriage (depends on the carriage though.) I agree, horses working in the city is not good. Maybe if you have a yearly event or something where carriages work for a day in the city that would be okay and would promote tourism that month, but not every day of the year. That's abuse. And then theres the traffic.

  • And I'd imagine the rain isn't too good for the carriage

  • Did you see him slip on the curb on the take off at 1:10?

  • omg its hoofsthey should be shood and cliped ! thse are cliped and cracking =[

  • thanks for your comments, these horses are not properly maintained. No TLC for them in NYC

  • poor horse not evan a sheet to cover his back =[

  • I´m from brazil

    this horse dont try*

it is beatful..very beatiful. but it do work very.. maybe cause he is something a horse.

    congratulations for conprection*.

  • There is nothing wrong with a horse in rain. My horses are turned out, and have full access to a run-in style structure. Guess what they do in the rain? Stand around in it, outside. It is obviously not cold, as shown by the outfits worn by the pedestrians. I wouldn't trot my horse that much when he is working in the city, but other than that, the horse looks healthy. Diaper bag is held up nicely off of his/her hocks, and the horse moves freely. Looks well fed.

  • The regulation does not permit horses to work in adverse weather due to the risks pose to the horse and the public. There horses work in Traffic not in any pastures. This carriage was the only carriage that took passengers during this heavy rain. The other carriage drivers stood by to wait for the rain to stop. It shows the lack of adherence to the regulation and the lack of oversight. Also they have no access to a run-in style structure. People outfits-due to rain was sudden & unexpected

  • there are many greedy drivers. the horses wellbeing should come first no matter how badly you need to make rent or whatever. basic needs must be met, food (which all the horses i've seen in NYC are chunky), water, turn out....living in the city for months at a time can really break a horse down.

  • well, the reason why most of them are chunky is because they use draft horses. and draft horses have a heavy build. i feel so bad for the horses in ny. theyre not frigging taxies, and people need to realise that. i hope it stops soon.

  • Draft horses can show ribs too. They are chunky because they are being fed.

  • I'm sure the police are dying to help. While it's an important issue to many, it may not be to the police (which does suck).

  • the biggest concern about a horse working in the rain would be A. if it were cold rain/cold weather or B. cars not being able to stop quick enough on wet pavement and hitting horses or carriages. rain rot is the least of these horses problems

  • Looking at this video,i think it is terrible weather to be out in but maybe he got trapped by a quick storm. There isa license plate that says 1044,did you try asking the police or spca took look at this and ask the owner?

  • The NYC administrative code states that horses are not to be worked during adverse weather conditions, which include heavy rain. It is not a subjective ruling and the driver should have taken his horse back to the stable. But because there was no officer - ASPCA or NYPD - around to order him to do so, he chose to violate the law. He is shown with two different sets of customers. If he gets away with this - what else is he getting away with?

  • Why does this guy trot his horse so much? I don't think it's awful to have the horse out in the rain BUT stopping time for a vehicle is a lot less in the rain and accidents do happen......which seems to be other NYC drivers excuses about all the deaths over the years.

  • Actually that horse was the only one working in the rain and the humane authority stated he was not supposed to work the horse in such weather. Another example of lack of regulation enforcement

  • There are lots of other horses working in your video, she's not the only one out. I'm honestly curious about your personal horse experience. I hear a lot of people complain about carriage horses lives who know nothing about them, it's very annoying.

  • I should probably also mention that I in no way support NYC carriages. The horses are in generally bad condition, their lives have little quality and enrichment, and the traffic is simply too dangerous.

That said, not all the horses are poorly cared for, but unless NY plans on actually keeping an eye on these companies, a ban needs to be put into place.

My only issue here is people protesting the horses without getting educated.

  • but it doesn't take much to know that horses don't belong among speeding cabs and box trucks, its not an issue of how they are cared for, they could be kept well or terribly but that wont help when they are in the middle of traffic and a car takes a turn too quickly,

bottom line is its just not necessary, the end does not justify the means.. there are other professions these drivers could pursue

  • if only you were our Mayor who has no heart and no common sense. peace.

  • I agree. I'm sure for the most part these horses are treated well by their owners, but that is not the issue. They simply do not belong in this congested environment for the sake of tourism.

  • So what? It's rain. I have no idea why the horse is being trotted everywhere, I don't agree with that. But most horses I know don't care a bit if it is raining. It sure beats the heat. However, she does look somewhat concerned about your umbrella in the beginning there.

  • Rain scald occurs when horses in poor condition are exposed to wet whether and muddy conditions. If the horse's or pony's skin stays damp and dirty for long periods of time it becomes infected by bacterium.

  • I'm familiar with rain rot. The horse in the video does not look like it is in poor condition. She (or maybe he) appears to be lively, alert, and have a good body condition. Also, rain rot is not dangerous or difficult to treat. It typically takes a lot of neglect for rain rot to become a significant problem.
