FACT: Okinawans WERE NOT given a choice to cooperate or not to cooperate to Japanese Imperial Army. They were forced to cooperate against their will and die for Japan and the emperor. Okinawan families were instructed to murder-suicide their own family by using the grenade distributed by Japanese Army in case they were to be captured by Americans. Japanese merely sacrificed Okinawans to delay the attack on mainland Japan.
you people need to know that the americans did bad things to the okinawans not just the japanese, yes the japanese did worse but its was reported that 10,000 okinawan women were raped by american soldiers, theres good and bad guys one both sides so please dont think the u.s were saints they did some bad things in the war but not all of them did it, i respect the soldiers in world war 2.
@gamergeektwo There are many estimates, just because 10,000 is the highest dosen't necesarilly mean that is the official figure. That being said, there is a very good chance it could be true.

The Japanese treated the Okinawans worse than the "enemy" forcing young girls to serve as combat nurses in conditions laden with dysentery and generally treated the Okinawans as slave labor. The rewording of forced civilians suicides is what I was referring to when speaking of the history rewrite.

Japanese gov. has since tried to rewrite this history in text books.
Actually, most Americans did not treat the Japanese badly once the war was won. The Japanese that killed themselves were brainwashed into thinking they would be tortured if they were captured. Also, suicide is part of Japanese culture dating back to the days of the Samarai. Japan has one of the highest suicide rates in the world right now.
My Father fought on Okinawa as a Marine Sgt. and is alive today!
He never saw any mistreatment of the Japanese POWs and said they did not have time for such things. He observed an Okinawan Mother jumping off of a cliff with a child in her arms.
He added, the Japanese and Okinawans were glad to get out of the caves, eat decent food and get fresh water.
Still have to visit this place.

The "Japanese" people you mentioned were Ryukuan villagers that threw themselves off cliffs because the JAPANESE army told them to.
That, combined with the brutal & ferocious attack from the americans almost killed 1/3rd of the entire population of Okinawa !!!
btw - "Japanese" suicides statistics DON'T include Ryukuans as,
1: Ryukuans are not Japanese.
2: Ryukuans DO NOT have a similar culture of suicide to Japan.

Suicide is not part of Ryukyuan culture!! Suicide is prohibited in Uchinanchu culture.
