  • i have one night and no pool to learn butterfly for tomorrow's school swimming carnival. I can do the legs.... oh gosh, i'm dead. :P

  • I appreciate this posting, and definitely find it helpful, but I can't watch Phil anymore. He is just far too irritating...

  • thumbs up

if you like swimming because of expertvillage

  • how do i do this without the water?

  • @meowey55 it's like a mermaid kick both of your feet are together

  • as for kick... its just a normal dolphin kick?

  • It's not hat involved. Just do freestyle pull with both arms but push down harder. This video makes it seem complicated.

  • hi

  • You all talk about your 11 year olds swimming :27. Well a 50. Is 150 feet. Double that. Then quad it. Don't think she goes a :54 or a 1:48. She may be an excellent swimmer. But fly. Nobody negative splits. It requires strength. Especially at a higher level. Your stroke is mainly from the hips and chest. Drop your chest leave your head in the same basic area. And then push your hips up and kick. Your head upper back arms and but should be the only part of your body out of the water.

  • Great video. One thing I have learned as having my major as fly is hips, chest, and head. You tell us the proper pull. But without kicking from the hips. Dropping your head with your arms. Pushing your chest. And raising your but. Your pulling into the air. Not going to have an effective swim.

  • you show a simple pull movement in the video, but in the example you are doing the S shape pull. A straight EVF pull is not as effective as a S or a BUTTERFLY pull, unless you're aiming for a very high stroke rate of which might help you in speed if the drag doesn't slow you down.

  • Hi do you watch WINX CLUB if you do and you like it thumbs up come on a big cheer for WINX ^_^ WHOO HOO O_o HA HA HA HA (: OOH AND HAVE A NICE DAY W C

    bye !!!

  • Hi i have a doubt its about Phillip toriello if he does not have hair whats the biggee to wear a swimming cap. And one more thing Expert village is a very nice place to learn about all strokes the Breast stroke the Butterfly stroke the back stroke the free style stroke and flip turn. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA AH HA JUST CANT STOP LAUGHING HOO HOO HOO.

  • if ur bald why do u put the cap!!!

  • i am a 13 year old competitive swimmer and i am good at only 2 strokes, freestyle and breaststroke. breaststroke is the easiest for me be cause ive been swimming it since i was seven plus i hold a record for 50 meters breaststroke. freestyle is easy because.well its just easy but my problem is fly . in fly my coach says tht i keep putting my arms to deep and i am asking you on how to prevent that because i cant stay "on top of the water"

  • If he is bald y is he wearing a swim cap

  • it shouldnt take that much upper body there is an 11year old girl at my club who goes a 27 50yrd fly

  • keep pressing 9 it sounds like a video on how to have a baby

  • I have no clue how to breathe! I've watched tons of videos, but my legs just stop kicking!

  • @Rois3106 You need to join a swimming club to pretty much know how the butterfly works or read a book on it.. my kids learn it by joining a club & they are good!! Goodluck! Peace!

  • Why are you wearing a swim cap? Weirdo...

  • sometimes a little glide after recover can help especially over longer distances

  • why do you wear a swim cap if you dont have hair?

  • @mcluven10 cuz of the clor my friend :)

  • please tell me how to move the legs!

  • @pinchiponcho831 all you do is keep your legs together and kick, simple as that

  • 7 people suck in swimming..

  • dogggy snoop haaa,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

  • thanks for ur detailed explanation !!

by the way, are there any skills for taking breath??

  • @zacklee0630: lift your neck, not your chin. also, side breathing can help

  • I'm a 910 swimmer thinking of starting butterfly your video has helped me a lot thanks!

  • this guy is god he made me get first place in every stroke at my swim meet

  • ths really helps as i swim with hannah miley

  • @mrfartbart o.o hannah miley? wat??

  • For me, expert village really helps a lot in my swimming practice.

But somehow, I wonder why there is people who complain about expert village and Mr. Phillip Toriello that what they teach is retarded and doesn't help at all. Hey guys, they upload this video free, what are you guys expecting?

If you guys is that good to complain about, why don't you upload a swimming lesson video for all of us?? So, please stop complaining. Please.

  • wow this vid is really helpful!

  • wow i wish i had seen this back when i was still competing...the IM may have been a little easier

  • yeahh this vdeo helps a lot thnxs for up load =) know i can be perform my strokes with a better style, =)

  • somoehow i get faster when i breathe every stroke

  • @epicfail19 I believe my coach says you actually go faster when you breathe

  • @SwimmsterGal

thanks anyways, now my breathing patterns are 2 up 1 down and 1up one down

  • no problem, its good to help a fellow swimmer

  • @SwimmsterGal Well yeah, breathing is necessary (lol) to swimming, but every time you breathe, you're using your muscles that much more to pull yourself farther up out of the water instead of across it. Breathing every time can mean your arms get weak and start to slow you down by the end of your 100. Try for every other time, or once every three strokes. I just breathe when I need it, which can be anywhere from once every other pull, or once every five pulls.

  • uhhg...i got this swim tryout thing tomorrow... i learned freestyle from a book last week, breast just today by watching pple at the gym pool and butterfky from you tube... then there is backstroke. :( i cant wait to see the video of me sucking.

  • i suck at butterfly only, the other strokes i do perfectly...it really gets annoying

  • same here. oh exept breast stroke too because when i was little i dislocated my upper leg from my hip and now its like really weak so i cant kick very hard.

  • Priyatnyi golos i vse.....

  • jimmy D shea helped me get a full 15 seconds off my 50m butterfly. 15!!!!

  • lol where they get this guy

  • so u still didnt have to make that your name and youre the one who started this whole arguement so go be sad somewhere else

  • ya i do.

    and actually you started this

and rememeber...youre the sad one ^_^

  • ummm no u dont and youre the 1 who started this by replying to my comment and actually ur sad so plz stop replying i dont really want to talk to any sad losers

  • well you dont have to talk to yourself....

and you did. so you can stop replying first :)

  • can you just stop wasting my time because youre just a sad loser trying to converse with somebody on youtube

  • trying? youre replying so i am.

now if you stop replying, so will i

oh and... look who else is talking to someone on youtube

  • ok im done replying

  • good good XD

  • mhm last reply

  • uh huh

  • pull and push with the arms.... now i finally understand the rationale behind that S stroke

  • hey i hope ur not using this guy for competative reasons....most of his stuff is old school, it is a push and pull but most of the stuff he teaches is crap sorry try watchin some of the phelps videos those are actually credible

  • I know Phelps and Thrope are amazing, but still, this guy teaches the basics, don't critique him for that! And if it does happen to help them, then maybe they should listen to this guy! He knows what he's doing...

  • what really puzzles me is that he teaches u to do an inward catch and then when he swims he does it outward, which is of course how it's supposed to be. If u have ur private technique at least be consistent and swim with that.

  • Yeah, he's bullshit in all of his videos.

  • i agree you

  • this guy can really swim..........so how many times are we suppost to kick????????i always have a probleme with kicking!!

  • you kick while you pull and after your recovery

  • Yes. You kick twice per pull. The rhythm should feel awkward until you get it right, and then butterfly will feel smooth, and great.

  • an olympic swimmer once said in an interview about the butterfly. you kick when your hands leave the water and again when they enter the water. so far in my years of swimming this has been the best way to explain it.

  • This is good advice. I have to swim a 200IM, a 100 fly, and a 200 free relay in a meet saturday, so this week I will try that at practice, until I understand.

  • sorry but hes a little off, try watching phelps videos fom an underwater and side angle they are much more accurate, this guy is old school

  • yea thats the best way to put it

  • that was Misty Hyman. What she said was 'I kick my hands in and out of the water'

  • @FoxtrotNinja which is faster 1-kick-1-pull or 2- kicks-1 pull?

  • @thecoolguy771 I kick 2 per pull, but that's just me. Some kick 1 kick per pull, and while it means more pull time, it also means exhaustion and possibly burning out before the end of your race.

  • @FoxtrotNinja once you get it you feel like you are Michael Phelps or some shit like that.

  • Yeah, it one big kick, then a little kick than arms.

  • some coaches claim that this is not necessarily true.

  • since lots of you guys think this video is crap can u just make a good one showing us the right way?

  • this guy is sooo fucking stupid he doesnt even press his chest when he swims fly and ur not suposed to bend ur arms in so far u have no power as aposed to the a whole new stroke. this technique is good for 50 butterly lol

  • This guy is soo off. Thats not how I was taught fly.

  • every1s tought different...derrrrrr

  • awesome

  • wow all I need is a pool now

  • Arms are too straight, swimming 'windmill' like.. It's supposed to be bent.

  • the only good advice is bending your arms on the catch and not putting the arms together, the rest is off a little bit.

  • if your swimming fly incorrectly it "takes an incredible amount of upper body strength" this guys terrible

  • wow these videos are amazing..so helpful

  • Great advice on how the hands should not meet.
