Other things that you fail to specify. Going into space and other scientific research is the best thing the government can do with your money. Would you rather it go to war, or some pork project, or be redistributed as welfare? If all my money went to NASA I would pay my taxes with far less resentment.
I'd rather have my money go towards the furthering of our scientific capabilities, which may one day result in us reaching other planets, than have it go towards feeding those too uneducated or unmotivated to get themselves a home/food.

There is no real reason to blame the government. Rockets are VOLATILE, unreliable and blow up all the time. During the space race. The US and the Soviets lost billions of dollars and rubles because sometimes most of their rockets blew up. I'm not even going to mention how many men and women died in these accidents.
