10064119 that's not accurate. Kx outside of Blanchard ns has no paint, and its 2060 ft tall. They are only painted if they have beacons and ob lights not if they are strobes.
Cool video. I just recently visited this tower. Can anyone explain why the FCC says it was built in 1975, other people say it was built in 1959, and it says 1968 on the base of the tower? Which date is correct?
When I was in high school I knew the fellow who worked at the tower and tried to convince him to let me go up in the elevator, but I was never successful. You couldn't build something like that today if you wanted to because the NIMBY's would come out of the woodwork.
What do they do with towers after they are dismantled? Thing is I found an old radio tower laying in sections next to a standing radio tower in my town. I was excited. Only problem (maybe) is that it doesn't belong to a company like SBA Towers or American Towers or something cool and independent like that; it belongs "to the town" or something; I think it is a public service transmitter; the only phone number was the County Sheriff's department; and I'm not gonna call them asking about it!
thomas pond baby! summer time is where its spent, its grate taking atv's there i did a trip in the rain, my atv got stuck in the mud, but the tower is awesome to c u can c well off from 302! its cool!
Nice video. My grandfather worked at Dielectric in the 60's and early 70's and always wated to go up the tower. He had MS and they wouldn't allow him to ride up in case the elevator failed and he had to climb down.
He used to tell of the native americans that were hired to work on the tower and how they got caught up there in a thunderstorm one day.
I have climbed a few hundred feet up the WCSH transmitter in Sebago on Winn Mtn. My father climbed the old one before it fell due to ice.
Thanks. Its too bad your grandfather never got to go up, that would have been an amazing experience.I dont know if I would have the guts to go up as high as it would go, but I might take the chance if I ever got it.My grandpa told the same story! He lived on Panther Pond, a lake very close to the tower (I'm sure you know of it.)He told of the Native Americans swinging about while building the tower, and he always emphasized how agile they were. They must have been pretty brave to build that beast.
@pfd37 I was running through this clip and saw the comments and needed to share. I was born in maine and lived on the "Tower Rd" in raymond until I was 5yrs old. My dad worked at dialectric until his death in 1975. I know the tower was built before I was born, my father helped build it. The substation on the Tower Rd wasnt built until after we moved in 1976. It never had a fence crossing the road to block from access and the Millers were the property owners at the top with the red house at top
Wow, I thought I was the only nut who was curious about radio masts in Maine. I actually drove 40 miles to go see the one in Baldwin. Great stuff.
On a side note, do you have any knowledge regarding whether the red and white painted gradations are representative of any universal standard of height? I've always wondered if you could estimate the height of a tower by counting those colored sections up.
haha yeah im right with ya man, i love this tower. No actually, im really not sure about the paint representing height. great question though, that would be really interesting to know. ill check it out. i haven't seen the one in baldwin..how tall is it?
First off it a TV TOWER not a Radio Tower....however there are a few Radio antenners afixed to it! Second the Elevator goes almost to the top. it stops about a 100 feet from the top. and Third back in the late 80's early 90's a couple dare devils jumped from the top....yes they were wearing parachuts.....they said it was the scarest jump ever...they had to jump between the guide wires. It they hit one it would of been instant death!
yeah, i dont know y i didnt put tv tower in the title, i guess cause im just used to all the radio channels it offers.but thanks for reminding and sorry for misstating, i just changed the title.yeah i figured the elevator went almost all the way (except for the spire at the very top.)My dad told me when he was a kid he saw some people base jump off the tower (he used to live less than a mile away, over at panther pond).maybe they were the same guys.geez what a crazy idea huh? that towers a beast.
Its really cool from up on top....I work in the broadcasting Industry and was a High School intern @ WGME. I was allowed to go up in the elevator, but i had to turn 18 first...but it was well worth the wait. it was a once in a lifetime view! Do you know that that tower all once the tallest man made tower for about 3 yrs or so till the empire state building was completed! On its side its longer than a Aircraft Carrier. And it can be seen from both Portland and MT Washington!
wow you really went up? Incredible! you've got quite some nerves man,i dunno if i could do it.My dad once had a chance to go up,but he turned it down, thinking he couldnt handle the hieght.I dont blame him, youd need to be pretty darn fearless. My question is,how was this tower surpassed by the empire state building?the ESB is only 1472 feet tall (including the spire)while the WGME is 1619.I think it was surpassed by the KFVS tower.congrats on going up and im glad i could get this vid up for you.

@weirdvids345 The one in Baldwin is 508m or 1666 ft. It's practically brand new and more difficult to get to.
