  • oh my goodness - just wow!!! To answer some other questions, the shots in this vid are looking at the west end (kinda obvious really) and GNER started in 1996. From memory the mk4 sets were first to get the paint brush, others may have more precise dates.

No class 158s received intercity livery, HOWEVER a few sets were allocated to Intercity Cross Country (and then Virgin Cross Country) in the mid 90s.

  • what year were gner mk3's first painted?

  • Which side is this? The East side or West side?

  • Ah iI just love the 158s always will do

  • i was born when this was filmed

  • aah the 141, god it looks brill!

  • But I reckon Britain's carbon footprint went way down after we got rid of it lol

  • well yes, it is a bus bolted on to a chassis literally!!

  • it looks how they always looked, like a BUS!

  • cos it is a bus, bolted on to a railway chassis! :D

  • ah yes, but do you know what kind of bus?

  • leyland national I think, I know its a leyland something

  • yes, it is a leyland national. you would have thought they could have chosen a nicer looking bus!

  • happy days for me.

  • yes they do that noise because they are tired and need to go to the depot for a rest :)

  • This is very rare, ah the class 158, was the best dmu around back then and still is today but now they make that strang whining noise, thats my only complaint, any agree with me?

  • It's that whining noise that made them so brilliant! They are my favourite DMU!

  • All class 142s 143s and 144s sounded like the 141s from new. With the mechanical SCG gearboxes, they were the quietest 2nd generation DMUs. However, all the SCG 'boxes had been replaced by Voith 'hydraulic' transmission by March 1991 due to an epidemic of failures, but the 141s stayed original, except 1411113.

  • I was very dismayed when all the class 142s, 143s and 144s had to lose their SCG gearboxes in favour of Voith units. The mellow sounds of the Leyland TL11 engine and the whines from the SCG gearbox complimented each other and were quiet. With Voith transmission fitted, the TL11 engines seemed overworked and were too noisy. Before long they were worn out and replaced by Cummins units.

  • when did they modernise the track work

  • Is the 158 at the beginning in Regional Railways livery or Intercity livery as I am not sure whether the Intercity 158 existed.
