Interesting to see a fellow Hurlburt Field alumni here finally. I worked in IMSOC (1969 - 1971) and we were the only people inside the perimeter fence during A model launchs. We had one blowup in the shelter during one launch and we had to evacuate the area PDQ as the nitric acid cloud was blowing towards our building. Saw some fantastic launchs and explosions while I was there.
Oh, I see..., all those atomic bombs and nasty poisonous things were supposed to explode over Canada, right?, to protect those crap eaters south of the border...
@Albernio And to protect the Canadian cities that would also have been in the crosshairs. Defending North American airspace was pretty much in the mutual interests of Canada and the US. While US strategists certainly preferred the idea of keeping the "nasty stuff" over Canada and out of US airspace, keeping the defensive measures as close to the USSR as possible made just as much sense from a Canadian point of view. Canada just happened to be closer to the USSR.
@Albernio Actually if a bomber were to attack, they would probably attack too canada. Also Since New York would probably be hit by the biggest bomb in soviet arsenal, the fallout of new york would reach canada. So it was in our advantage to had it to defend it. Plus these were made to strike soviet bomber over unpopulated area. They were based in la macaza and would travel to hit over unpopulated area. Plus radiation at this altitude would go over northen quebec as a worst case scenario.
@Albernio and these radiation would likely stay at high altitude. Dooming the inuit population, to never drive a flying snowmobile at 60 000 feet in the air. but still, we would save New York and Montreal and toronto from deadly fallout if those bomber achieved theyre mission. Plus if one bomber felt that approching the border they might not make it they would launch theyre bomb anyway. and 90% of canadian population live close to the border so.
Boy gents this really got out of control. As the video explaind the BOMARC would explode in the midst of multiple bombers and take out all of them. There is a site off rt 539 in New Jersey at McGuire AFB (You can see from the road). There was a fire in 1960 that was caused by the liquid fuel due to corrosion. I'm guessing that the IM-99A was Liquid Hydrogen/ Liquid oxygen.? Does anyone know. I realize that they switched to a solid rocket with the IM-99B.
Bomarc was ramjet powered. Used kerosene as its fuel! Nothing fancy. The booster engine was red nitric acid and I think ammonium perchloride! Very nasty stuff!
@sakoshooter48 I recall it was Inhibited red fuming nitric acid (URFNA), and Unsymmetrical Dimethyl Hydrazine. (UDH). I believe Anhydrous Hydrazine may have been used in some other internal rotary hydraulic motors. I worked on the IM-99B at Niagara Falls NY. (44 years ago). You are right, All very nasty stuff.
actualy back then it was better to have a warhead detonate two miles up off shore istead of dozens of bombers droping a crap load of bombs on our citys
they had no real preparations they had altitude to stop the blast. the missile would be a few miles or less near the aircraft. the plane could never withstand that.
Good for you. Now how about reading a book before submitting the crowd to more of your retarded posts? BTW how can a missile get close enough to kill a bomber with a conventional warhead yet somehow a nuke just won't do the trick?
Maybe you could explain it to me then. A concentional Nike Hercules, Hawk, Terrier, Tartar, Talos, and numerous other missiles with conventional warheads could kill aircraft back in the 60s but somehow one with a nuke would miss? Sounds like you're the fucktard here.
Maybe you need to read more about Soviet era bomber tactics and they they were deployed to get at the United States. This type of anti-aircraft defense made perfect sense and was very effective at keeping bomber formations away from our shores. What will you think when you find out that the F-106 carried the nuclear tipped Genie air to air missile. Good god man, make a pilgrimage to Wright Patterson Airforce museum. You might just be amazed!!!!!
I worked on Santa Rosa Island for the 4751ST ABM (1972-1975) as a contractor and loved to watch these original ICBMs launch.

Worked at Hurlburt Field FL in the early 70's launching the IM-99B solid boost Bomarc's. Loved the duty on Okaloosa Island

The footage at the very end is impressive. That thing comes screaming in to light off a nuke right under your seat. Doesn't seem very survivable.

@gvs76 I am not sure as I never launched an "A" bird. But the fuel was very toxic and they could not be within a 1/4 mile of launch site at launch.

I believe it's a crazy idea because it must have been ridiculously ineffective ...
bombers may not fly through Atlantic (which is quite big, you know!) in "dense squads"
semigotbanned 2 years ago
It was given to Canada for defense of the north. it would be very effective because it was designed to destroy lots of aircraft at once.
Ottawagunner 2 years ago
sorry, I just don't think it's possible to fight strategic bombers with nukes.
I think this idea is completely ridiculous, and most likely was merely a lobbying success for the military industrial complex..
semigotbanned 2 years ago
the blast from a this could fry electronics with its emp blast from miles away. any closer and you have a crispy plane.
Ottawagunner 2 years ago
ok, but a couple of miles would be just the altitude difference between two bombers LOL
the space is vast, I doubt that those primitive missiles even knew where to explode to cause the maximum damage...
remember, those bombers were prepared for a nearby nuclear explosion (they themselves carried nukes!)
so I just don't buy it...

FelixA9, you're a moron.
"BTW how can a missile get close enough to kill a bomber "
it couldn't??
You're just too stupid to understand the 50's and 60's technology.

I'm just not buying it that Soviet bombers would have approached the U.S. in huge concentrated formations.
Maybe at most 2 bombers/major city and 10 for Washigton or something lol
thanks for the F-106 info, I'll look into it !

It's entirely possible and it was planned. On both sides. Just because your peabrain can't comprehend it doesn't mean it was wasn't reality.
