  • Hi Larry. I purchased the Paf Joe and Paf Pro, what pickups, just fantastic! I just have one quick question. I never like the sound of neck humbucker on any 24 fret guitars, just too thin (my preference). Is there any humbucker (for the neck position) that will make a 24 fretter sounds like a 22? I hope you know what I mean.

  • @indoshakermaker

It's impossible to make a pickup sound like it's in a different location along the string length, but an Air Zone might be warm enough to be a good choice.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Thanks Larry. yeah, i remember watching a Herman Li video on youtube, he was saying about his signature guitar being a 24 fretter, which had a custom made neck pickup. which he said it was made so that it sounded like his neck pickup on his orginal 22 fretter Ibanez. Not sure if it was your company who made it or other

  • @indoshakermaker

We made the pickups in Herman's signature Ibanez. He was comparing the sound of an Evo neck pickup to his new pickup, which is not the same as a PAF Pro or PAF Joe. Compared to them, an Air Zone could be good to try.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Much appreciated Larry!

  • Hi.. I have an Ibanez RG 550 EX ( 2002 ) and i have an Evolution in the bridge and im thinking of swapping it for an AT-1 because i want a big fat lead tone and a pickup that can do rock to blues to fusion and doesnt mind doing some good metal .. do u think this is a good idea ?

  • @hisham3000

Yes, as long as you keep in mind that the AT-1 doesn't have quite as much power as the Evo.

  • I have a Charvel San Dimas, an alder body maple neck/fretboard combo, with a Floyd. I want a smooth tone, but I want bite and clarity to be there when I need it. I'm thinking an AT-1/LiquiFire set. Do you think this will help me achieve the sound I am looking for?

  • @WoWintosh

It might do what you want, although the final sound will also depend a lot upon the type of amp you play.

  • sorry for the late question, But I'm wondering if the AT-1 has any problems being used in the neck position? All the numbers on the website suggest that It might make a perfect neck pickup when paired with a high output bridge model (Super distortion) but I wonder if there are any characteristics of the AT-1 that would prove me wrong. 2005 Ibanez Prestige RG2550 basswood H-S-H. High Gain tube amp (B-52 AT100) and 1994 G-K 2100sel (solid state 100w)

  • @RGTFanatic

It may have too much bass and mids for the neck position if you intend to use it for chords, but it should be OK if you use it mainly for solos. I think a PAF Pro, Fred or Breed neck model might be etter all around in the neck.

  • Would the AT-1 be too high output for the bridge in my Epiphone Sheraton, a semi hollow maple body guitar?

  • @vactube34

I think it should be OK, but it would be wise to not use extreme amounts of gain.

  • Hi Larry,

I have a mahogany super-strat type of guitar. I like the AT-1 very much in the bridge, but I am currently looking for a nicely rounded neck humbucker to compliment it. Do you think a Steve Morse Neck model would do the job? Thanks for your help and thanks for making some of the best pickups around!

  • @sLevnZelevn

It might be too dark for a mahogany guitar. An Air Norton or LiquiFire might be better choices.

  • Hi Larry, I have an American Deluxe Strat (Ash body, 3 single coils) I've been searching for the right tone for a while through pedals and putting hotter tubes in my amp, I've gotten close but there is still an element that's not there. I'm a huge Andy Timmons fan as well as Warren Haynes, Guthrie Govan and recently Joe Cefalu.

Would an Area 67 in the neck, Cruiser Bridge (DP187) in the middle and a Tone Zone S compliment each other and get the versatility and tone I'm searching for?

  • @acat26 It's strictly a matter of personal taste, but i think it would be more versatile to put the DP187 in the neck and Area 67 in the middle.

  • Hey I have a question: CurrentlyI have the d sonic in my guitar but was looking for something with a little more definition, would this be a good choice?

  • @AnchovyRun

An F-spaced Evo2 or an Evo bridge model would have more definition. I don't think an AT-1 would be the best choice if that's what you're looking for.

  • Hi larry. i have a fender strat HSS. and im wondering what pickups are good for it. i play stuff like blues to hard rock. thanks.

  • Hi larry. i have a fender strat HSS. and im wondering what pickups are good for it. i play stuff like blues to hard rock. thanks.

  • Fantastic playing and wonderful sound!

  • hey larry, how are the harmonics on the at1? say, compared to an evo2? and what neck pickup would go well with it? (alder body, flamed maple top, H-S-H) f-spaced as always:)) Thanks

  • It's warmer than the Evo2 & this extends to the harmonics as well. I don't know what you're looking for in a neck pickup, but a LiquiFire, PAF Pro or PAF Joe should all be good choices.

  • thanks larry, tried them out already for my guitar, really awesome as ALWAYS!!!(well duh its dimarzio :))) )

  • yeah he plays great!

  • Question, I have an Ibanez RG5EX1, and use a Fender vibrochamp that gives me a pretty decent tube-like amp sound. I use mostly the 4th position of my guitar, trying to get a Strat-like sound. I like AT sound so I was planning to get a cruiser 186 for the neck. Is it possible to replace the original humbucker my guitar has with the cruiser (single coil)? and do you think it would work good to give me that awesome clean tone that AT has?

  • well you would need a mesa lonestar, and a bb preamp to get an exact copy, and you'd have to get andy to play it . but, with a new pickguard , I would say yes.

  • what's the character of the cruiser on the middle? i seldom to heard AT play the middle position. any other recomendation? i want to get paul gilbert bridge-middle position sound. i believe that's a jem singgle right? and u dont sell it

  • I just love how andy wants a very fender like amp and guitar so he goes to the people who know how to get that sound best............Mesa and Ibanez!

  • umm....why wouldnt he just get a fender?

  • cause the other guys do it better.

  • what kind of a question is that?

  • whats the song in the beginning

    ?

  • Hey Larry, thx for posting this video. Andy's a great player as he is a person!

  • Oh wow, I got to hold his original AT100 yesterday. It was nice. And his copies are great too. Almost exactly the same really.

  • i was at this show, it was the namm racer x reunion show at anaheim where andy opened up for paul. phenomenal player and a great guy.

  • I can vouch for that. I built an AT100 Fender clone with 186 Cruisers and they do sound a tad thinner than the 187s in my AT100 original.

  • Questions. I am mostly a 2 humbucker, mahogany body, with mahogany set neck, guitarist. However I do have a jones for a Fender Deluxe Strat(H-S-S). Any suggestions on pickups or and guidelines? Hard Rock/Metal sound is what I am searching for. This is open to anyone. Lookin for info.

  • Lots of choices for the bridge position, including the AT-1, Air Zone, Norton and Tone Zone. Either a Pro Track or Air Norton S in the neck and a Cruiser in the middle for a brighter sound should be a good setup.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Hi Larry; do you have any recommendation as far as singlecoil pickup that is identical in sound or VERY similar in sound as the AT-1?

  • @gottfriedbrux

The most similar model is the Tone Zone S (DP189).

  • Here is a question. Is there such a thing as too balanced? I mean take the Norton bridge pickup. It seems to have what players would want for a blues to rock sound. Yet little to no fan fair.

  • Many players (including some who are well-known) have used or are using Nortons, but no pickup can be "one size fits all". Considering the large number of choices, we're happy there are players who appreciate the Norton.

  • He tried both models and likes the sound of the bridge model better. It's a little bigger-sounding than the neck model.

  • It's the bridge model in both positions.

  • 5*****

  • Alnico V magnet p'ups tend to be the most versatile. Warm, Sweet harmonics, and attack. Ceramic magnet p'ups tend to be louder, handle distortion better, sustain is probably better. Alnico V = Blues to Classic Rock. Ceramic = Hard Rock maybe also some heavy metal.

  • YOu can get metal tones out of A5, A4, A2 or A8 pickups, easily. You can also use a ceramic mag pickup for styles other than hard rock/metal.

The coil design and the Magnet work together in a pickup. One should never go entirely by magnet type when picking a pickup....there are smooth, fat sounding ceramic pickups and edgy cutting sounding Alnico pickups.

  • I like that guitar, reminds me of a fat strat.

Although it's obviously mixed with tele elements too. I use my neck pickup quite a bit too I can't decide between 2 1 1 or 2 1 2 config.

  • I prefer H-H setup, but that's because I don't really like the sound of a middle single-coil along with two humbuckers.

  • AT sounds amazing!! hell i want one of those!!! but the Dimarzio site still doesn't have them :P :(

  • Yeah they do. It's in the medium power section of the humbucker pickups.

  • I want that guitar!!! I guess that was the entire point of this video.....

  • fucking awesome

  • Great vid, andy timmons is amazin

  • awesome! i love AT

  • awesome

  • Thanks for uploading this, Larry. Andy Timmons is one of my favorite players.
