I do a music quiz at an East London pub and I included a picture of the Ramones in the picture round a couple of weeks ago - I think maybe one team knew who they were - when I gave the answers I said - and the next one is The Ramones and this girl in her mid 30s said 'Who was that one?' - and someone shouted out 'The Ramones' and then she says 'Yeah - but who ARE they?' - she'd never heard of them - really sad and beyond belief.
Punk Rock spread in 1976 and 1977 just like the way Psychedelic or Acid Rock spread throughout 1966 and 1967. It came from a number of different influences that accumulated in a new sound for a new generation. Punk started in New York and England on different foundations but I think The Ramones brought it together when their first album came out. The British punk scene was sorta forming but came together when the audiences there saw and heard The Ramones.
Excellent bit of history but i can't believe the bickering going on in these comments - Sounds like a load of politicians, just lighten up and get on with it - On a lighter note, i live just up road from Glen Matlock.
clashaddict thats someones view of what happened. joe strummer was there so was steve jones and he said the ywent after that gig at the black swan nicknamed the mucky duck. johnny rotten has denied liking the ramones but he said he attended the gig and admired them becoz of their unique ness. the pistols didnt copy the 1 minute 30 second songs they played at new york dolls and mod time stikin to 3 minutes
um, just to clarify, the clash and sex pistols weren't at the roundhouse on july 4th, they were playing a gig in sheffield that night. However they were at Dingwalls, the next night, on July 5th, along with the Stranglers.
And even more amazing is the Clash were making their debute performance backing up the Sex Pistols on July 4th. The punk scene was on the verge of exploding. Amazing.
ramones are great but just ever wanker on the high street hasa bloody shirt . do they know a song proably not. it is so sad. really lots of great bands. The dead boys, New york dolls, siouxsie and the banshees, the slits and lots more great bands. really cool vid thanks for the upload.
This is really interesting. It's a shame that even though you and I love them - the only connection they have with the outside world is kids wearing Ramones T-shirts without knowing a single song of theirs.
I've never considered White riot to be a Ramones ripoff but coming to think about it - it is! (I never thought it was one of their best anyway)
The only punk bands that mean anything to anyone apart from me and you that grew up with it are The Clash and The Pistols - that's fact and it's sad.
@NeilThompson30 also most people only know maybe one or two songs from the Clash or the Sex Pistols (for the latest generation it is what they played on guitar hero), and the songs they do know from the Clash are more like pop music (Rock the Casbah, Should I stay or Shuold Go, etc)
The sex pistols were posers and a one album wonder who imploded like the pussies they were. The Ramones were the real deal, four below average dudes from Queens who invented a sound and a movement and became legends without even realizing it, as talentless hacks like the pistols recieved the press.
hahahah the IMF? every 16 year old in the US will know who they are now. Since the US is meeting with them and the G7 this weekend to declare we are frikin broke.
ooopps I guess we did not have to wait until 2009 for a fiscal melt down in America.Open the doors for another round of Anarchy Rock. God Save America, the social regime.
Punk is part of rock'n'roll. The Ramones were there to play their rock'n'roll no matter if they were bad for the traditional rock scene. That was what a lot of punk bands did in UK back in 77.I'm a huge fan of the british punk scene and the US early punk scene(especially the ramones and the dead boys)
The Ramones and the Stooges are great no question but it took the brits to give punk some style and identity as they did with the Mod scene in the sixties. Cool Britania.
the ramones were not punk ! they were just rock ! all the ramones were hippies ! sex pistols hated the hippies, the pistols were not influenced by the ramones, the clash were probably !ary america but you didnt start punk !
The UK punk scene was very political. In deed, I was very polical at 20, Joe Strummer was at 22, and you seem to have a pretty good political opinion in 2008 and your only 24. Wait and see if 20 year olds notice when the US goes to the IMF for a bail out in 2009. Aware? a few, but enough to make the differance.. Although, I do agree with you on the cyclycal nature of some of these social things. As now, we are more likely to see a scene explode from Michigan Ohio than more prosperous regions.
Punk was born in the cbgb's it is the definition of accessable art.Televition qualifie. Mc Claren goes back an forth america (in this video it is said) and it sais in a video you can find by tiping "classic albums the sex pistols part 1" on you tube; that he didn't have a single possible coment to make other than "just make it caotic" thats how the sex pistols(created)punk.McClaren is the villan, the pistols say it them selves!
Punk Rock exploded in the UK for a reason that no one who lived through 1976 UK will ever forget. It was a year that saw the shock resignation of the prime minister and Britain's humiliating rescue by the International Monetary Fund after the pound had plummeted from over $2 earlier in the year to only $1.6 by September. Economists were predicting an economic depression to last 5 years. cont..
It was a year of unprecedented heatwaves that led to reservoirs drying up & water shortages, bread strikes & record unemployment & bankruptcies. Riots in Notting Hill & the British worker was earning less money than any modernized country. It was all timing & could have occurred with any of the great rockers; The Ramones, Iggy, MC5, NY Dolls, Dead Boys, Johnny Thunders or even Lou Reed, Wayne County or Patti Smith. London and Britain was ready to explode
all those bands you have quoted were all rock ! not punk rock !very different, and most of these glam like bands had big hair (hippies) lol, britain made punk rock !
The Roundhouse gig started the UK punk scene? Lots of sites say that the Pistols and the Clash were playing a gig the same night in Sheffield!!! I don't understand how?! The Damned supported the Pistols a couple of days later (6th of July I think).
Its just due to people simplifying what happened. The Ramones played the roundhouse on the 4th, and the pistols and clash did not attend, as they were playing their own gig in Sheffield. However the Ramones played a second gig the next night, on the 5th, at "Dingwalls", and members of the pistols and clash intended this gig, and met the band.
I have been trying to post what you said but it wouldnt let me ..Just read your comments. Sex Pistols probably didnt get much from The Ramones, but The Damned and The Clash probably copied their style. No one played like the Ramones at that time they are legends..So are The Pistols. Different bands/styles.
@Lizardthing I think its called taking the piss..Its a British thing to make yourself seem humble with people you may be slightly in awe of to and break the ice...
Yeah but I'm sure the Clash must have been BIG fans of the Ramones. And the Ramones were a BIG influence on the Sex Pistols and the Clash and Black Flag etc. But the Ramones were and the best punk group there ever was.
Seeing the Ramones at the Roundhouse on video brought back GREAT memories. Can remember that day so well. The Brothers just blew us all away!!!............still recovering!!
the ramones are utter shit,,theyre just like any other rock and roll band,,,,the sex pistols were punk the rest off the shit bands that call themselves punk bands are punk ROCK bands,,,,not important anyway music is it
Well, do you know anything about who The Ramones were as individuals?! Where do you think they came from...upper crust Beverly Hills, California? They came from freakin' Queens, New York! You know, where there are alot of leather jacket wearing PUNKS who'd kick your ass if you looked at them wrong. The Ramones were definately punks. Johnny Rotten was afraid to enter their dressing room at The Roundhouse because he thought THEY would beat HIM up, true story!
Dude you're a freakin' joke! Just a freakin' joke! The Johnny Rotten story comes from The Ramones stage light cordinator Arturo Vega. He had no idea who Johnny Rotten was because, duh, The Sex Pistols had barely formed! I swear you're just like these possesed Black Sabbath fans who can't accept Zeppelin started before them. Go chew the gum off Joey Ramones' sneakers dipshit!
Ok, ok. I get it. Is it that all their songs sound the same? I guess I just don't know who you could possibly like that DOSEN'T sound like other rock bands! I mean, please give me some examples here. Which leads me to another question, who do you think The Ramones themselves sound like? Please...I'm really trying to understand you here!
This whole conversation is stupid. Why does it matter who started it?
You honestly think you're cooler if you can say, "I'm from Britain. We invented punk," or "I'm from America. We invented punk." Honestly, no one cares. They just like the music.
Annnd. My opinion: America had punk artists first, but the UK perfected it with more bands of better quality.
31 years and counting! I remember back in 1977 loads of people saying that punk would never last, that it a fad, that it was rubbish, that punk bands were trash. I would to see all those people eat their words now that bands like The Ramones, The Clash, The Sex Pistols and The Damned are as popular now as they were back then. This music is timeless. Heres' to the next 31 years. :-)
WOW! All the best punk rock bands ever! lol... I like the Clash best though... even though they might of not of been the first punk band, I still like the Clash more. But, I do like Sex pistols, the Damned and the Romones a hell of a lot more then any other bands!
No comments? Sheesh. First footage I ever saw of the Roundhouse show. I remember that very day: I was far from London tho - rather, browsing a street fair in Millbrae, CA. (Hey, gimme a break, I was 12) To be a "punk" back then simply meant you were a shiftless thug - there was nothing desirable about it, and no musical connotation whatsoever. All the more reason why everyone alive today should thank their lucky stars for the Ramones ...!
But wasn't being a shiftless thug a central part of the appeal though? The problem that I have with all this stuff being canonised is that it places punk into the realms of "hero worship" and "good music" - qualities that the Ramones, Clash etc strove hard to get rid of.
Bottom line: the world needs more shiftless deadbeats with zero desirability.
Excellent point. By posing as undesirable deadbeats (what I meant was, there was zero "punk chic" back then) the Ramones raised a significant question: who ELSE might have hidden talents? Maybe ... everyone could potentially be good (or at least, good enough) at something ...? It remains a very empowering idea ...
All entertainment is about DRAMA. Not musicianship, not money or connections. DRAMA. All the bands in this clip became influential... because they showed how to create MAX DRAMA with limited musicianship, but a powerful stage presence, attitude, and message. But let's not kid ourselves. Each of these bands had 2-3 geniuses. Any garage band can play a Ramones song... but not LIKE the Ramones.
The Ramones should've kicked Johnny Rotten's ass. I don't what anyone says, Rotten is joke.
