yes you can start with half the weight just make it light enough to get your muscles warm before you start getting into heavy. The point is to warm them up.
whatever you can do without losing your form, for 8-10 reps(what he said in the video). It depends on your current strength level. I believe I started at ten pounds years ago, moved very quickly to fifteen, then twenty, tweny fives, etc
Always start with a small weight to warm up. Then make sure you use a weight that you keep your form correct through the exercise that is the most important. Not how much weight you can lift.
