It was a bad move when she put up her hair at the end and flounced offstage, like she was mad at her hairdresser. Netrebko can never suggest the grandeur of a queen.
@operafantic Before an execution one's long hair must have to be cut or to be put away,so her move was exactly right corresponding with that guilliotine scene.
@spqrmor The hair was out up in a sort of bonnet. The guillotine was not invented until the late 18th century - Anne Boleyn was executed by the sword. The execution was delayed sevaral days because Henry VIII, acceeding to Anne's request, sent to France for a specialist. Her head was severed from her body while she was in a kneeling position. The axe was messy and often enough the executioner missed the nape of the neck on the first swing, and had to chop again. Imagine!!
@assindiastignani Following historical facts you're absolutely right, but my answer was addressed to an nut who didn't understand her gesture accordining to the scene.The most important that she could render the character of Anne Boleyn and her singing was good and very convincing. Thanks for your historical remarks.
She is permanently in difficulty in the high register, producing pushed, white sound. The coloratura is inacurate (as always), in the center and the low register the voice is opaque and throaty. Absolutely inadequate to one of the most brillant belcanto roles. Blessed are those who believe the PR campaigns that she's a vocal miracle.
i watched her on Friday 30 Sept from the 1st orchestra row in the Met: the whole evening and especially the second act was simply an unforgettable experience
@mabemawi Lucky you!! I only saw the HD transmission in a movie theatre yesterday and it was still fantastic. I wish I could have seen it live in the Met but when I tried to get tickets for February but they are all sold out.
@Ariadne7710 Lucky beyond words!! When I booked, most seats were gone but to my absolute astonishment, 1st row was still available. I sat in a plane for 11 hours to get to NY and it was totally worth it to finally watch and listen Netrebko perform life – and then from so close-up!! Listening to the various recordings here, she is clearly not a robot and certain bits came out very differently the night I went: especially her “Al dolce guidame” in the second act was simply mind-blowing!
@mabemawi Lucky, lucky you. I am green with envy. I will still keep trying for return tickets for Feb. and I will fly from Europe if I get them. I will still see her in Don Giovanni on Dec. 20 and Covent Garden in Traviata on Jan 20. I love listening to her voice live, it is so rich and luscious, and she is a great actress too. But the most amazing experiences of my whole life were seeing Callas in Norma, Bolena, Traviata and Medea when I was a teenager studying music in Rome and London
@Ariadne7710 Aaahh! I wish you'd be there on 17 Jan, that is when I will be at Covent Garden to see and hear her in la Traviata! if you happen to be in London already by that time, let me know. Green is a lovely colour .However, anyone having seen Callas in four superstar roles has no reason whatsoever to wear it :-))) !!!
@mabemawi You are most kind. What a shame. I won't arrive in London until the 19th January but I am sure both the performances of Traviata on January 17 and 20 will be worth going there for. I have seen so many very so so performances of operas in the last 20 years, that at last it is great to have a soprano who not only has a great voice but can bring the characters to life as well.
@peque1204 Oh come on, I waited for her to lay down and cover her face with that red fabric at the end. It was a bummer that she didn't, I tell ya! I'm watching this live at the Met in a couple of weeks. I can't wait.
It is interesting to see Netrebko compared to Ricciarelli, because both singers have an amazing stage presence. You cannot take your eyes off them on stage.

it is unbelievable for how many years this role has been flooded by atrophic singers completely mutilating it while themselves and their small courtyards think they were incredible in singing bolena
horrible

@allanaki Approssimativi è bell' detto. Una bellissima voce lirica e leggiera, ma una Anna Bolena...veramante no.

@assindiastignani Assolutamente d'accordo!

@allanaki Tutta la tecnica è approssimativa. La Netrebko sta bene a fare verismo: che se ne rimanga in quel repertorio!

Surely, a more appealing and vigorous performance while maintaining its artistic quality. It is a marvelous version, indeed.
