and there are dozens of apps already. with the release of the WebOS source code, we'll see tons of remarkable developments currently impossible on the iPhone.
what BS. these ads suck. please at least get a decent mic and use updated images of the iPhone that isn't squished and that shows the correct carrier.
@apfband That is the biggest crap I've ever heard 1 its not Java, its Javascript 2 A Programming Language is only as useful as the functionality it offers. I've tried writing programmes for both systems and even though Apple's IDE is way better, its still easier to create applications using the Mojo SDK and Eclipse. I mean, sure, on the graphical side of things a language without an abstraction layer is better, but I can live without games on every platform I own. *And* Javascript is extendable.
I actually dislike the iPhone. I own dozens of Palm devices and am eagerly awaiting the release of the Pre in the UK. In these videos, my tongue is firmly in my cheek.
Nothing. I'm just being facetious. I'm playing with the emulator at the moment and have a couple of applications on hand and they are indeed programmed with just Javascript, CSS and HTML5. And they're nice.
Yes, you can. However, no more details of the emulator have been forthcoming. The one thing for sure is that it's been developed by a third party software house and will NOT be included with the Pre.
So yeah, there's an emulator (and it looks quite good - I've seen it play 3D games), but I haven't heard anything about it for a long time, it won't be by Palm, it won't be included with the Pre and it won't be free. Uh oh.
Pre will be bomb. The only reason people are making these videos are because they are scared. I don't even get whats with all the buzz. The iPhone is pretty awesome and the Pre will be too.
Yeah, that's right, I'm scared. I'm making these videos because I'm scared. Scared like uh... like your momma! Yeah!
Aw, man; I'm no good at this. Could somebody talk smack for me? I just don't know how to do it properly.
To be honest, I'm not even sure if it's appropriate. He said "Pre will be bomb" and I got lost straight away. I've heard people say things are "da bomb", but not for years. I don't know if that's still a cool thing. So I'm just frontin' to see if he'll step up...
Just to let you know that the Pre has an app called "Classic Palm" (not sure on the title). This application will run as an emulator to run all PalmOS applications past purchasers have bought. All you need is the original software and activation codes if need be.
I did mention this in the comment yesterday. The emulator has been written bya third party and not by Palm. At this stage, it does not seem like Palm will bundle it with the Pre and that it will be a separate purchase.
I have seen it running various things including 3D games, so it does appear to have very high compatability with existing Palm OS software.
If you like Palms so much and will be one of the first to get a Pre, why poke fun at it? My favorite is the episode where the Pre kicks the iPhone's ass... hilarious.
It's precisely because I like Palms so much that I feel able to poke fun at them. And actually, it's the iPhone trying to bully the Pre. The Pre tries to just take it until it has enough and needs to set the iPhone straight.
I think the bullying helps to make the final confrontation more powerful. Mind you, at the end of the day, they are just talky phones and I ain't Tarkovsky...
The application that's currently called Classic is an emulator which allows you to run at least some of the old PalmOS software. It's a third party application not written by Palm. The Pre will not come with this emulator installed on it and it will have to be purchased separately.
I think this a is a bit of a dick move on Palm's part. Would it really have killed them to license it? I'm a big fan of the Tapwave Zodiac, but I feel that machine was killed by the failure to include licensed apps
You're talking about a "common language with custom API extensions." That's exactly what Pre is doing. What do you think the Mojo framework is for? :)
I think the programming languages used to write webOS is what will make the palm Pre a turning point. The Pre will be able to have a seamless integration with the web. I think HTML is easier than C hands down.
You're quite right, but I'm afraid I'm not about to re-make this video. What I may well do is create another one when the Pre is eventually available to buy and we can be sure of the feature set.
Note: The emulator was not developed by Palm and is not thought to be bundled with the Pre.
or maybe take this video down until the pre is released? it's a shame how many people get their information off of youtube videos/reviews and make their purchasing decisions off of that. imo no information is better than false information.
To be corrected. The Pre WILL be able to run most if not all Palm OS apps but only if you buy a 3rd party Palm OS emulator made for the Pre sold separately.. It wont run the old Palm OS apps natively. The Palm OS emulator for the PRE runs as an app in a separate "card" and can which can be minimized while running other native WebOS apps. Anyway this Commercial is cute, but not correct because of the Emulator and that it can run the old apps with the emulator.
YouTube for sure. Look at the iPhone - it doesn't really support Flash, but it does support YouTube. It would be a devastating blow for it not to.
Breaking news: Palm has announced that there will be an emulator for old Palm apps available at launch time. And it is NOT being written with the standard SDK. So there is an alternative programming method. They just don't want anyone (other than the guys writing the emulator) to have access to it yet.
these r hilarious but seriously this no c thing is really scaring me like wtf can i write with html and css and java script???? could we see big apps on this lik a multimedia player????
That's a good question. The software that Palm has shown off so far has all been programmed using only HTML, CSS and JavaScript. And it's all very high quality, very responsive software. So no doubt there's just a little more to it. I would imagine that there is enough of an API for you to be able to make calls that do run at a deep system level.
The best guess seems to be that access to the API is via HTML, CSS and JS, but that this might be opened up later on.
Do you have any word on flash support in their web browser the 2 palm guys went crazy when asked in an interview about that... I think if they open up to developer using flash all will be well, if developers where givin the chance to write in action script that would be great! And seriously I refuse to believe that they wrote all the built in apps using html, CSS and JS for starters the web browser runs on webkit which is writen in c++
The only thing I know about it's Flash support is that Palm is signed up to Adobe's Flash programme, which pretty much says to me that it will support Flash. But will it support every aspect of Flash? Maybe not.
Palm are vociferous about stating that the built-in apps were written using only the web languages. I don't have any knowledge of the actual subsystem layers, so how the JS, CSS and HTML ties into the underlying OS is a bit of a mystery.
Dumb video. It's already been proven time and time again from various tech companies with hands on pre-reviews of the Pre that it's got a superior operating system and simply runs more apps and faster to boot.
I could care less about Apples app store. It's full of Wii-like shovelware crap that's just too gimmicky for my taste.
The iPhone is a good phone but the Pre is clearly going to be beyond it.
there are alot of disadvantages to the iphone . but no phones touch screen is beter than the iphone. But one thing that pisses me off is that none of these cool palm phones are beingrelease for gsm carriers. Just Dumb ass sprint. NO1 like you sprint go away!!!
Unlocked means more exoensize. at least 50 dollar add on. and if you lookm at pricing of the palm treo pro, thats 600 unlocked. i'm immagining that the pre will cost more. but i want a blackberry flip
i think to someone who has an iphone this could be funny and pleasant, but to someone who is outside the box, it just sounds like an iphone fan boy taking advantage of a phone that is anticipated to be better than the iphone but not yet released ( therefor cannot defend itself ). but i know you have said it many times you have plenty palm devices and actually plan on getting the pre and this is only "humor"... but not to humorous to me, maybe because im not a iphone fan boy..
Wow this is pretty lame, oh and by the way yes you can use HTML, Java and don't forget CCS.... yeah i pretty those are the most commonly used software formats for programmers... Not sound like a dick dude but you may want to do a little more research on something before you publicly try to bash it.
I'm surprised by how often I have to say this, but I do know this. I own over fifty Palm devices and I'm quite aware of what one can do with HTML5, CSS and Javascript.
But then, this is humour. I'd suggest you watch part five and then perhaps feel better disposed towards me.
Yes, I'm comparing something which has been out for 18 months with something that hasn't been released. I do actually say so in the video. Yes, it's unfair. But therein the humour resides...
