I'll have to admit that snakes frighten the hell out of me, but I have better sense than to kill them automatcally. Usually if I'm out fishing and happen to spot one(I haven't yet so far whwere I live, amazingly)I'll just leave it be and let it go. In fact, I keep a sharp lookout for snakes whenever I'm out in the woods or near a creek or river or pond, well you get the idea.

I think alot of the stories you hear about them coming after people and striking wildly are exaggerations or flat out didn't happen. I do alot of fishing and spend alot of time outdoors. They do tend to hold their ground but of the hundreds I've run across, none 'came after' me or struck at me. Mostly because i left it the hell alone. I've also never seen 6 foot monsters(not impossible, but not a regular site). Biggest was maybe 4 1/2 to 5.

I happened to put my hand right on top of him and it freaked me out, but it didn't strike me at all. It just slithered away. I'm a rice farmer in northeast arkansas, and i have seen many unusually large cottonmouths (6 ft +). The large ones are very agressive. I have even had some of them come out of drainage canals and bite my truck tire!
I said, they have come up out of drainage cannals (ditches) and bitten the tire(s) on my pickup when i have stopped to look at them. I have also had them persue me in rice fields. I have also witnessed the typicall warning behaviors of tail shaking and mouth showing.
Snakes do not "persue" people. They may strike you if you're too near to them ... or if you're stupid enough to taunt them. But they DO NOT chase human beings. Why not? Very simple: They can sense that you are too large of a creature to be useful to them as food. Everything you've written is antithetical to the observed behavior of venemous reptiles. IMO if you find a cottonmouth, rattlesnake, copperhead, or anything else thats venomous WHILE youre out a good distance away from a home or park or something, Why kill it? Odds are that no one will ever see that same snake again anyways.

Grew up in central Fla. Caught these snakes and sold to Gaterland so they could milk em. Made a shitload of money in hs, sellin em for 10 bucks each. We mostly caught rattelsnakes, run through a palmetto field and run a hose into gopher holes. Put a funnel on your end and pour a little gas down the hose. 9 times outta 10, you could here a rattle or see the rattlesnake come out at you. Moccasins are evil fukers though. These bitches will chase you. .

I'll have to admit that snakes frighten the hell out of me, but I have better sense than to kill them automatcally. Usually if I'm out fishing and happen to spot one(I haven't yet so far whwere I live, amazingly)I'll just leave it be and let it go. In fact, I keep a sharp lookout for snakes whenever I'm out in the woods or near a creek or river or pond, well you get the idea.

I grew up on a cotton/soybean farm in central Arkansas and I can tell you that cottonmouths/water moccasins, will actually aggressively attack. It's happened to me more than once. Although I wasn't bitten (moving too fast) the snake did give chase for a few seconds. I, too, have seen them five feet in length. I can't stand these things.

I think alot of the stories you hear about them coming after people and striking wildly are exaggerations or flat out didn't happen. I do alot of fishing and spend alot of time outdoors. They do tend to hold their ground but of the hundreds I've run across, none 'came after' me or struck at me. Mostly because i left it the hell alone. I've also never seen 6 foot monsters(not impossible, but not a regular site). Biggest was maybe 4 1/2 to 5.

Yeah I agree. I live in Kansas and I was out fishing one day and I placed my hand on a big rock where a cottonmouth was resting. I happened to put my hand right on top of him and it freaked me out, but it didn't strike me at all. It just slithered away. I come across a lot of cottonmouths and copperheads and I haven't had any problems with them :]

I'm a rice farmer in northeast arkansas, and i have seen many unusually large cottonmouths (6 ft +). The large ones are very agressive. I have even had some of them come out of drainage canals and bite my truck tire!

I said, they have come up out of drainage cannals (ditches) and bitten the tire(s) on my pickup when i have stopped to look at them. I have also had them persue me in rice fields. I have also witnessed the typicall warning behaviors of tail shaking and mouth showing.
