  • ...and if it doesnt have a white background? lol

  • This is awesome. I'm a graphic designer and this works great.

The only problem I have however is when I shoot it over to illustrator, looks like the multiply layer gets flattened and I end up with the white residue- is there anyway to remedy this? Let me know.

  • Another one who gives people the wrong impression how easy it is to extract hair by using the most simple image possible...sigh.

  • Would have been more impressed if your image actually had a background.

  • lol, i didn't even bother with this but your voice is very posh

  • impossible to follow and frustrating. worst photoshop tutorial i have watched

  • @takertitan Don't blame the author, blame yourself for turning off your brain when things get a little bit more complicated and if you still want to blame someone, blame Adobe.

  • I've been photo shopping for 3 years, this was the best extraction tutorial I have seen.

  • @Biederbeck05 Not it's not, since every image requires a different approach.

  • aa' lea' maaaask

  • Or... just use Select -» color range and delete white. lol faster and easier.

  • Comment removed

  • At around 1:52, when I hit delete, it didn't delete anything for the layer mask. I did Select All -> Press Delete on the Keyboard. Nothing happened.

  • This is usually because the default foreground and background colors are the wrong way around in the tools palette. If you select all, click the tiny 'Default Foreground and Background Colors' at the bottom of the tools palette and make sure the layer mask is selected in the Layers palette and then press delete, it should have the desired effect.

  • lol so many different ways to play with colour settings.. funnily enough i never realised you could do it this way, make life a bit easier now i must say! cheers!!

  • out or option key?? where the hell is that?

  • That's the ALT key - not 'out' key

  • ah right, sorry i was watching it late at night so my volume wasnt that loud, thanks :D

  • What about if your background is more than one colour, e.g an actual image

  • A good question - and one for another tutorial I'm afraid. Here's a good one: (search for "photoshop curly hair selection tutorial" by denmuel)

  • @rotbed Thanks, this tutorial is still useful though :)

  • It was still positively helpful. I now use this to make jib jab type characters and I will animate it soon. Thanks again mate, I was really stressed because I coudn't find a decent tutorial.

    Cheers

    Smoof

  • Followed you all the way down by 1:52 .. I have no idea what you're clicking on up at the top of the screen? Did you say select all? Really a bit fast paced. Otherwise it was OK. You also sounded really nervous.

But I really need to know what this guy did after he masked the top layer. I couldn't hear em' straight!

  • Hi - sorry it was a little hard to follow. At 1:52 I click on the SELECT menu and choose ALL (select all). The second time I go to it I choose DESELECT.

Sorry to all who found this too fast - after seeing it again I agree. The reason it was cut to run quickly was because I'd seen so many videos which dragged on forever that I didn't want to make the same mistake... looks like I went to far in the other direction!

  • hi how do u do the blue background? :)

  • The blue background was created as a separate layer under the main image - you can see it at 0:21

  • @2012fake Just go on google and type in blue background and copy and past it in.

  • This would have been a great tutorial if you would have slowly giving the instruction instead of going 100 miles/hr. I didn't get a thing because it was going so quickly.

  • This is a great tutorial!

    Thank you so much!!!!

    -xxx-

  • the fur is that image is already a cut out isnt it

  • @lessofyou No if it were cut out it would have like grey and white checkers not a white background.

  • This technique is good.. but it has its limits. You need to know that you want a blue (or whatever colour) background BEFORE you start this. Really the only way. The masking thing makes it so that you cant really change it later. Plus only works on Backgroundless images.

  • Hi - yes, I agree it has limitations. This was an image I worked on for a specific project, so I did already know what colour the background was going to be - but I felt that the fur detail around the hood blended so well with the new background using this technique that I thought it would make an interesting tutorial. Some might disagree (such as the Photoshop genius below...).

  • no i dont talk to my mother like that i onlye talk like that to idiots who dont know how to use photoshop

  • Nice. Do you talk to your mother like that?

  • You idiot, fuck of If you don't like this video, don't see you making any contribution to the photoshop community? Idiot got nothing else better to do except hate on videos this is top notch video so fuck off and don't hate.

  • that did no tell me anything

  • Worst turtol ever lol white BACKGROUND WHAT A*** joke! please make one with a random background...

    Noob!

  • wtf this vid not finished im biiggiinner what do i press after

  • awesome video i kiss you

  • i'm a beginer so how do u fuckin do this

  • I was just about to type the exact same thing kieranmullen2

  • So how will this work if we do not have a white background?

  • Seriously when you get use to it, rendering hair only takes up to 5 to 10 min now for me. Tis is the best hair turtorial ever.

  • Never mind I got it.

  • That one part makes no sense when you made th elayer mask. You said Selecte all, delete than deslect. WTF.

  • you have to remove the filling of the mask (select all and delete) to repaint it back with the brush. Am I right?

  • YEa your a bit late now ive known that for like 2 and a half months now, but thanks.

  • thanks really helped with photos where people jump and their hair is everywhere =D

  • Oi, Nick. You lost me on the adding layer mask part. You went to fast. Please explain what you do there. THANKXS

  • Hi, a written version of this can be found at the site shown on the video at the page hair-cutout-in-photoshop.html

    Hope this helps.

  • Thanks for this video! I linked to it in a post on my blog:

    Metavo Photo

  • this is more of a hack or cheat to remove hair, not recommended for profesional output

  • Thats really good but you go a bit fast at some points...

  • Worked, i only had to move the slider on the one image nd it worked :S Not that im complaining. Great tut!

  • this is a good tutorial :) but can you say me pls how to cut out hair if i have colorful background? :(

  • for future reference if the person on the other end has to figure something in your tutorial out that you said then you suck.

  • The option key is the ALT key. Why do you have to be so abusive? These are freely contributed videos - maybe you should try reviewing them in the spirit they were submitted.

  • dude wtf is the option key why can't any of you guys make tutorials assuming the person on the other end doesn't know anything you guys suck at tutorials.

  • tales of war speaks the truth! i agree

  • Tahnk u! But have other problem HOW DO LONG HAIR> ? pleaze help me ;D

  • I think color range would better . . it takes about 2-3 minutes. . . :P true story...

  • Thank you! This really helped me!

Even if the background picture is detailed and not plain white. This method still works!

  • Awesome...thank u!

  • rotbed Please ! Could you help me !! plz.. just answere me

  • Excellent video, you really know your stuff.

  • Just save 3 minutes and use the magic eraser/magic wand.

  • thats for friken noobs that dont try to learn the program they're using and put up with crappy results.

  • Don't deny it, you could get the same result without going through all that palava.

  • Magic wand? Lol. Photoshop noob.

  • Yup magic wand. I could have got the same effect (if not sharper) in 10 seconds and you know it. This video just used the longest way possible and the end result was not worth all that bother.

    Photoshop noob, maybe.

    Brain with common sense, yes.

  • Post a tutorial. How would this magic wand technique work against a complex background? Best way to do hair cut outs is to use a plug-in like Fluid Mask.

  • Because a completely white background is complex, isn't it?

  • Not every image is a solid uniform colour, like the majority of photographs not taken in a studio or with a good set up with professional level lighting and so on. Let's see the magic wand get as accurate a result as this technique for a normal every day photo with a nice scenic background with lots of detail. Also you should try Select > Colour Range instead of Magic Wand most of the time, unless you like to shift click every little spot of the same colour.

  • I hardly think that white in this video is a detailed scenic background. The magic wand would have removed it in 1 second. In this video he goes through a whole palava to remove a white background.

He did not show if this worked with a detailed background.

  • No he didn't, but it does, I do it all the time. It's more fiddly but it does work. The Magic Wand is largly frowned upon because of it's inaccuracy and because it's mostly people new to the programme that constantly use it. You want to use masks like he did on a professional level as it allows you far greater control further on if you need to change things. He just used this as an example because otherwise it would have taken longer, and he just wanted a simple straight forward tutorial.

  • I am just telling you, the magic wand would have worked on this image. If this method is to remove detailed backgrounds, then thats what he should have recorded. With a plain background, eg. this video, magic wand.

  • There are many ways to do things in Photoshop and whatever works best for you is just that, best for you. It's always good to see things done in a different way so you can try them out yourself and see if it saves you time or gives you better results. You don't stop learning untill you die!

  • ur n inspiration 2 me....thnks alot

  • Great tutorial, dont see what these guys are crying about...

i like that techinque, i use it alot when i want to place a person in new surroundings.

  • What the hell was that?

  • i think this tut is no good

  • The title is a bit misleading, but this is still a very nice, efficient tutorial. I'm definitely gonna use this in the future, thanks! =)

  • Congratulations, your tutorial save my day! Thanks a lot!

  • nice tutorial!

  • i don't get this tutorial ... the title and what your doing just doesn't match

  • The use of BURN to remove a halo is a nice touch.

Watched this tute twice, and still not quite sure what is going on.

It would have been better if he had not started with an object which HAS ALREADY BEEN EXTRACTED.

The simplest way I have found for hair is to make a mask from an alpha-channel dupe of whichever color layer has the best hair detail.

  • This is more like a "How to change the background color" tutorial.

  • For sure it's not "how to cut hair"

  • @Jesusdragon737 This is more like a "I don't know what layer masks are" comment.

  • You could just use the magic wand tool, it highlights all 1 colour, and since the background was FULLY white, it would of been quicker and easyer. 10seconds maybe

  • Good technique for one color background. Not helpful when an actual photographic image needs to be inserted.

  • Fast and Efficient. Faster than Fluid Mask actually...

  • That's one way of doing it. Another way I like is to create a brush based on the shape of the edges of the fur, and then create a mask and use that brush to reveal the edges.

  • This method is OK if you want to replace a background within Photoshop without creating an actual mask. If you want to create a mask to lift the hair to a new layer then search for denmuel who has produced hair masking videos along these lines.

  • ok you did all that but how do you cut it out

  • bbbooooorrringggggggggggg
