@euclid901: He refers to greed as motivation to work, to pursuit happiness, to get succesfull in something. Greed is the inner fire to want something, justice for example. Occupy Wall Street aktivists are greedy for justice. If everyone would have that inner fire, america would be a better place to live in, and in that point, I think he is right :) .
You can't have capitalism without greed. The desire for more money (greed) gives the incentive to compete and competition creates new technology, more research, better products and services. Without the desire to want more companies would no longer need to do these things. If you can't beat the corporations join them. This country isn't designed for the working class, this is a capitalist country so in order to be successful you must capitalize. Equal opportunity means you have an equal chance.
So greed sometimes messes up and becomes criminal. So does love, so does passion. So many other things, in excess, also destroy. Too much water kills you. Too little oxygen or too much can too. But like oxygen and water, we need greed. That's what this speech is about. Don't confuse reckless, lawless greed with its more responsible counterpart.
The reason those with the sickness of Greed wont share, is because they have a spiritual disease, called.... Greed.
This is puzzling to many people, but the fact is they run the world because of the fact that they have this disease, people without it have no kind of desire to control everything and monopolize it all for themselves...
Jesus Christ came to serve, not be served... Came to live for his fathers wants, not his own...
Greed is good when you Try to Change your life in better... the human history is based on Greed... because without The Prospective of Gain, no one has interest to make something... we Have this Resource this Gadget and this Beneficts because someone Worked for himself... and we Use his Work...
The point is, ladies and gentlemen, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clearifies, cuts through and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed in all of its forms, greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge, has marked the upward surge of mankind, and greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA. Thank you very much.
Most misunderstood concept in American history. Fact is we all are driven by greed on some level. The world runs on pursuit of self interests. Is that greed? The assumption is always that greed is only relative to the pursuit of financial interests. Look at how greed for power and votes has warped our political dialogues, confused the issues we face. Fact is if we squelch the pursuit of self interests because it smacks of 'greed' we can all cash out. The idea of America will have expired.
@Cedtoron - America was based on the ideal that we could be driven by more than simple emotions like greed and self-interest. An ideal that we can compromise our self-interests to cooperate with others with different opinions and views. An ideal that we could become something better.
We don't always succeed but it is long, long way from deifying greed as something worthwhile and noble to pursue. Self-sacrifice, courage and compassion are noble. Those are worth pursuing.
Is greed good? Depends upon who you are asking, I would say no.
Does greed work? YES! or at least it did. I'm not quite sure if it has been exposed enough to be defeated.
The main difference between greed and ambition, is excessive and earnest respectively.
Unfortunately for the U.S., the system has rewarded greed for too long. And yes, it is legal and everyone (including uncle sam) drinks the same kool-aide.
@PashedMotatoes I am a student of business and I don't think that greed has advanced anything in the business world... in fact it has done the opposite. For example Bill Gates created a product for others that helps them be more productive and is widely available and he is a very rich man. All the richest men are in tech/commodities and provide good things for others. They wanted to serve before they were concerned for themselves. Greed takes society back in time....
@richardcadbury Enron lied about their financial condition and wrote future gains off as current value in order to rake in money hand over fist from investors.
Their stock went from $90 to $0.63 a share, they screwed their own employees out of their 401k and jobs, devastated their investors' $11 billion, and their top executives received millions of dollars in compensation.
Enron showed that greed will make men destroy themselves, their employees, and not give a rats ass.
@richardcadbury Less greedy? Are you retarded? Those people were so obsessed with money that they committed fraud and even convinced Arthur Anderson to go along with it.
@PashedMotatoes Actually, as a matter of fact, the Enron ppl, and similar characters like Nick Leeson and Jerome Kerviel all tell a surprising and similar story. They didn't sit down and think "how can we swindle loads of money for ourselves? let's take the risk that we don't get caught". In actual fact, these scandals start as a small, face-saving "white lie", and then more lies to cover the original lies up, and before they know it it's snowballed out of control and shit gets out of hand.
@richardcadbury So you're saying that a 63.4 billion dollar company went bankrupt to save face?
So their "special purpose entities" like "Whitewing", "JEDI", "Chewco", and "Mr. M. Yass" were just little white lies?
Casey Anthony's daughter had a swimming incident, had duct tape placed over her mouth, was wrapped in a garbage bag and buried in the middle of the woods. But it was all just an accident that "snowballed out of control."
He's right, greed is good. That's what separates the haves from the have-nots. Greed, as in always wanting more and more, is good. Greed, as in abusing people for your own gain, isn't good. As long as you know the difference, then greed is good.
Couldn't have put it better myself! "Greed--for lack of better word" is what the American business culture is based on. Well, that and the other big word.. RISK. To be a truely successful business person, combine the right combination of "greed", risk, ambition, and capital, invest wisely, and ba boom. Welcome to the world of business.
@kbkunz Heh, the fact that you never once mentioned innovation or creativity or intelligence in your list of positive business qualities represents everything that is wrong with modern capitalism/"business".
Ambition is good. And that's the word he was really looking for. Greed is not.
@RocketGuy3 Ambition is good you are right and if he replaced greed with ambition his speech would be right on. But he wasn't looking for the word ambition he meant greed and that's why he said it. When he said "for lack of a better word" he didn't mean a word that would better describe it but a word that doesn't sound so evil. He said greed because there is no softer way to say it. Greed is bad.
Greed = excessive or rapacious desire, especially for wealth or possessions.
You cannot be greedy for education, because greed is only related to wealth. Greed is not good, it is a desire to have excessive access to wealth by all means, even in case of destroying your family for example.... It has nothing to do with love.
Ambition is one of the most positive things a person can have, truly ambitious people get far in life, greedy people have their limits, usually with law... lol
@49fiori If it wasn't for greed, we wouldn't have the internet... or figured out how to increase our food production... or figure out how to create more leisure for ourselves in the form of television, iPods and iPads... or figured out how to improve the infrastructure so markets can run smoother... you're an idiot.
Internet was invented in public sector with government money, Russian, American, and European. Finalized by CERN in Switzerland, also a state subsidized project. So no greed here.
Food production, need not greed, in some cases greed - obese Americans is a good example, eating more and more because of greed - really not a positive example.
TV, Ipod, Ipad, computers, infrastructure, these were built out of progress not greed...
@49fiori By the way, you're definition didn't rule out education or love or anything. It just put emphasis on Wealth and Possessions. So, my previous point is re-enforced. You're an idiot.
You can be greedy in love, OK, how does your partner feel about that?
You can be greedy in education, this is an odd one, but ok, so you are greedy to learn, which means you will do anything to learn and get good results, by plagiarism, by cheating, probably that is a good example of greed in education.
Greed is only related to wealth / money. Ambition is the right word.
People, please don't be greedy, it's not good, you will achieve far more with ambition than greed.
@49fiori "Greed is only related to wealth / money. Ambition is the right word."
The very definition you provided for the word GREED proves you wrong. "Greed = excessive or rapacious desire, especially for wealth or possessions." The key word there is ESPECIALLY. The word ESPECIALLY puts emphasis on what comes after it, but ESPECIALLY and EXCLUSIVELY are two different things. You're treating the word ESPECIALLY as if it means EXCLUSIVELY and it doesn't.
@euclid901: He refers to greed as motivation to work, to pursuit happiness, to get succesfull in something. Greed is the inner fire to want something, justice for example. The evil of greed is that it is insatiable. Ask a rich man how much money is enough and his response is, "just a little bit more."
There are other people who live by these same words.....they are called addicts.

The movie Wall Street would have us confuse greed with reckless criminal behavior.
The human soul is desire. Greed is the exercising of that desire.
The nature of water is that it flows from high to low.
The nature of money is that is flows from low to high.
Those that can handle their finances will find wealth. Those that cannot will lose it.
Lk 19:26 I’m telling you that to everyone who gains, more will be given; but from the one who does not gain, even what he has will be taken away.
