@singblues1 The diode needs to be a little bigger in amps than what the cell is rated at. A 240 watt panel at 18 volts will need around a 15 amp diode. Mark
the sylgar that you pourd on the first one did not cove the cell on the backs. does it take some time for it to expand when you showed the second panel it looked like all the cells were fully coverd i wasnt sure if it was because you had used more sylgard or it just took mor time to get to that poin?
I have 37+3 solar cells to make 120 watts, they are 5x5. how many sylgard do i need to put on the back. i'm new too making these solar panels. can you help me please.?
Thanks mark, Then I will go with 50 6x6 that I already buy, you think that is Ok?? With 2 Sylgard. My fríes do you think that is posible to see a video to see junction conection?? Thank a lot from Dominican Republic and Thanks again for helpping.
@vichalas hello 50 6x6 will need 3 sylgard. I will be making a new video soon showing how to connect to batteries, charge contriller and inverter. Mark
Thanks to answer, what you think is better for me make panel of 100 watt or 200 watt with tempered glass and How much of SYLGARD 184 do I have to use for square foot.
I saw around otrer You Tube video and see that there are some malicious information about rupture of sows because of temperature change on the tempered glass and remenber the solar sows are paste in the glass, they say that when the glass expands and dilates the bristles do the same and to be rigid break, what you can say with relation to that. I'm undecided on the method to used for the construction of my panels they are 8 of 200 watt each.
You are awesome. Thank you for your help. I almost went off and did it completely wrong until I saw your videos. You are doing the world a great service. God bless you.
hello mark i want to purchase your aluminium frames and i want to know one thing with waht material you cover the back side of panel. can i use fiber and one thing more my previous panel reduces output in extreme sun i think temperature rizes what should i do to keep panel at normal temperature
This is a good video but I don't like to glue the cell directly to the glass like this. I would rather glue each single cell to a piece of board by dropping couple drops of glue in the middle of the back of cell. Why? Because it makes easier to replace cell if it broken without messing with other cell.
also lately i have been using old storm window glass for my panels(single glass type)depending on the size of the glass is how i use the 3x3/3x4/3x6 etc.. cells.works well and cuts down on the cost
used your idea with the sylgard...works great ,few bubbles to work with once poured,I cracked a few cells(3x6 but in theory they were paralled) so no harm no foul my panel so what:).the ?I wanna ask is have you tried to use a vibra-sand(Example ...black&decker makes a sander called a mouse) i was thinking about using a towel or another non-abrasive item to see if i could work the bubbles out (from the glass side)..also found that if garage wasn't hot enough i use the car trunk in direct sun.
Is Slygard 184 the only thing you can use to encapsulate solar cells? What about a clear UV protectant (non-yellowing) casting resin? The reason, obviously is the cost difference - with the Slygard at $40+ for each panel, it may be more practical to just buy solar panels with a warranty.
Just an Idea, but why not spray it on the back of your panels. I think you could do more panels faster and save on the sealant. But like I said just an idea tell me what you think, and if you do it let me know how it turns out.
What about spraying this on the back of your panels? Seems like it would go a little further if it were sprayed on and you could do more faster. Just an idea.
@hmrld Hello, I am not sure it depend's on how much power you use. First thing you want to do is heat your water then go with photovoltic. You can start with a 1000 watts of panel's with a grid tie inverter. I have both of these system's and I save around $80 to $100 a month. Mark
Yes one container is enough for 36 3" x 6" cell's. The sylgard will slowly spread over the entire area and I help spread it on back with a small paint brush. Mark
Is one container of Sylgard sufficient to cover the entire panel? Your video showed it covered only the gaps and not the whole panel. Your second panel is entirely covered with sylgard and therefore well protected. I don't really want to spend money on a second container unnecessarily as it is so expensive. Thanks for making the video.
Hi, great video full of info that i needed, I am about 90% done with my DIY 36 cell panel i made from wood, I need to know what gauge wire to use to run out of my panel I need to know this before i silicon my plexi on, I had planned on using 14 gauge wire because i have a bunch of it, do you think that will be ok? thanks! I will be posting a vid of my panel soon. thanks again and great info here!
congratulation for these very interesting and full of information video.
since i'm building a very lightweight PV panel for solar vehicale , i have a question about encapsulation.
my cells will be directly glued to roof of the fiberglass body , so can i use slygard as water and dust protection on the top (and not back) of the cells (no glass used to save weight) or is it better to use regular EVA sheet?
The liquid is call sylgard 184 you can find it on ebay.I still sell the frame kit on ebay.I no longer sell the glass due to the cost of packaging. Mark

@nguyenvlan Hi if you do not encapsulate the cell itself will not last. You must not let oxygen get to the cell it will shorten the life.
