  • 5 bars I think you mean

  • the iOS 4.0.1 do also give unprodictble recepion issu.... my iPhone 3G have bigger issu now then the earlyer version then 4.0...

  • i totaly agree with u there... i have a iPhone 3G and after i installed 4.0 and 4.0.1, the signal is unprodictuble... so i think also it has to do that u shud think about it before installing 4.0.1.. even when they fixed it alittle, it stil unprofictuble... but this can be just childrens sickess and they will fix it in time...

  • why is everyone testing the software updates on iPhone 3GS's?! no one has ever really complained about it on that phone. i want to know if it's a software problem with the iPhone 4 or if it's the new design? :)

  • I mean did the guy confirm that he was joking???? NO... So there is an issue after all with the antenna thing,

  • I tried this same test with a friends 3Gs with 3.1.3 and my iOS 4. Both phone kept all signal bars. Might be the area too. Far from the signal tower..

  • I don't understand this, how can the software be the problem when you are physically holding it different? That has nothing to do with the software, and an update to show a stronger signal doesn't change the fact that holding the device the way a phone is typically held degrades the signal.

  • I updated my iPhone 3G that I just bought from Walmart a month ago to ios4 and it sucks ass. I can txt faster than my iPhone can keep up? Which is pretty sad even tho it's an iPhone. So they need a update speeding the txtn and sending up again. Spell check slows it down too

  • Did you mentioned your test does not care about io4 one is bluetooth activated and ios3 does not ...

That's a major invalidation point of this test ... please run again ;-)

  • How can it be a software issue when its CLEARLY been proven that touching the black strip is what causes the bars to go down!!! Even if the software is exaggerating the problem this does not eradicate the fact that touching the metal strips WILL cause some loss of reception

  • @sorabhsharma Touching any phone WILL cause some loss of reception. The iOS4 only exacerbates the issue, and is proven with this video that it is indeed a software problem. If the software was configured correctly to begin with, then this issue would not be as big of a deal that it is. But even then, it's still Apple's fault. STILL a software issue!

  • The bars on both went down. I don't think it's the software.

The simplest solution is that most cell phones with some portion of the antenna exposed will have this effective if you hold them the right way.

  • Good for you...looks like beta tester for Apple or Jobs...

  • Motorola droid does....not have reception problems ;)

  • lol both phones did it hehe interesting.

I own an iphone 4 and my phones DOES NOT have this issue and I tested it very good. So its not clear still. I repeat NOT A SINGLE BAR loss on my iphone 4 ios4

  • And if it's really software, then it means that iOS4.0 is a better software, since it is really showing the correct signal strength and not stronger than actual strength like previous OS version. That might also explain why more iphone users complain about reception issue with AT&T than other 3g phone users.

    Something to think about!!!

  • so are you trying to say that S.Jobs doesn't know what the problem is, as his email reply posted on engadget and techcrunch suggests that it is definitely a hardware issue. Also the antenna location of iphone3g/3gs and iphone 4 are different. Also you must have noticed the old video(posted at engadget in the same thread where you posted your link) of similar issue on iphone 3g. So basically this has been an issue since long, but not much pronounced in 3G/3GS as compared to iphone 4.

  • @hary536 Sadly harry I believe steve knows that it is a software issue and when he sent that email to engadget he was trying to be "funny" and he shouldn't have done that because it created a major mess now. This video confirms that is it a software issue. Is quit obvious isnt it ?

  • @jondeak

No dear, i don't think Steve jobs was trying to by funny. You should see his reply to another person from a blog company, posted at Techcrunch. It was a more detailed response. As i said below, this doesn't seem to be a software issue, infact may be they are trying to hide hardware issue by using software to show more bars than actual strength, and that part may not be working on iOS4. But there are videos of few iphone 3g also doing same thing with old software.

  • @hary536

Also, if it was software issue, then everyone should have been seeing the same effect, but not. Hardware effect can be different for different people, but generally same software version on same phone should behave same, which it is not doing in this case as shown by other user below.
