That was okay, but remaining within the polite conventions of "LA sound", the potential contributions of both Lee Rit and Joao Bosco were watered down....This was a missed opportunity.
Nice version. I'm a Rit fan, but just wish Rit would have given Joao Bosco and Aldir Blanc due credit and mentioned the original title. Paulinho da Costa and Harvey Mason lay down some great percussion here. If you haven't heard Joao Bosco do this tune, it's the best! There are at least 3 or 4 dif. versions on Youtube, and all are great.
Yeah, this is "Incompatibilidade de Gênios" and not "Latin Lover", which is also from João Bosco and Aldir Blanc but a much different (a kind of bolero) and shorter song (about 2 minutes). And a much more romantic one:
"...As lembranças
acompanham até o fim um latin lover,
que hoje morre,
sem revólver, sem ciúmes, sem remédio,
de tédio. / Memories follow 'till the end a latin lover, who dies today - no gun, no jealousy, no medication - of boredom."
Hi, Poker1face and All, in fact Chico Buarque has performed this song but it has really been composed by Joao Bosco and Aldir Blanc as it was first published in the excellent album Galos de Briga (1976). I don´t really know why they called it "Latin Lover", maybe it was shorter.... Thank you everybody for your audience and comments ! ! !
Hi ! I wanted to say that it's not only here that they call it "Latin Lover", on Lee Ritenour's CD where there's this song, it's title is "Latin lover", with differents lyrics than "Incompatabilidade de Genios", but sometimes (DVD Coaconuts groves), it's called "Latin Lover" and J.Bosco is singing the lyrics of "Incompatabilidade...", so I think that he sings the lyrics he wants, cause both go well with the music, & there's only the title that isn't good one when he sing "incompatabilidade.."BYE
Well, there is a little confusion about diferent songs, this song performed here titled "Latin Lover", it's real name in portuguese is "Incompatibilidade de Gênios", i don't know why it's titled Latin Lover here, maybe it's the english name for the song, the confusion is because there is other song by Joao Bosco originally called "Latin Lover", and it is completly a diferent song.
I will try to write the lyrics of this version, because im not a brasilian, im from Paraguay but I speak portuguese a little bit too, by the way, sorry about my english too, jajaja.
I leave the lyrics translation to you people, "Incompatibilidade de Gênios" would be "Uncompatibility of personalitys", the guy sings about the completly opposite personality and thoughts of his girlfriend, for example, the 2 first line:
- "Flamengo (futball team) was playing and I wanted to listen (on the radio);"
- "She arrived, changed the station, and started to sing".
(what a terrible woman!, I would hate that, I love futball soccer too, hahaha, bye bye)
correct, after 10 seconds into the tune it's Bosco's tune "Incompatibilidade". This is a watered down smooth jazz version. Anyone wanting to hear the REAL version - search youtube "incompatibilidade de Genios", you won't be disappointed.
does the English translation of the lyrics make sense to ANYONE? there is some confusion about different versions. i would love to get an English translation of THIS version. terrific entertainment, despite the language barrier.
I love Bob James! I didn't know he was there with Lee, Joao, Phil and Harvey! This is a beautiful song and I love Brazilian music and the Portuguese language even though I don't understand....yet. Perhaps one day. GOD BLESS YOU for posting and God bless all the musicians. Amazing!!
ops! só agora entrei no seu perfil e vi que também é brasileiro! hehehe Cara, demais esses videos que voce postou!!! Quero o DVD desse show, deve ser do caraleo!!! Parabens e valeu demais por ter proporcionado a mim, mais este grande conhecimento musical!
Congrats, man! I'm brasilian and i love this songs!!! But this is the first time that i see this show! So beatiful, fantastic!!!!! Sorry my bad English... =P Thanks for this videos!!!
if anyone could transcribe the lyrics AS SUNG IN THIS VERSION i would be grateful to rec'v them. Portuguese is fine, no need to translate to English. i cannot find them anywhere on the internet - surely there is some kind-hearted Brasilian out there who would like to assist . . .thank you, anyone. NO'R, aka Jen
The song is titled "Latin Lover". I looked into Joao's web site for the "letra" and found the Latin Lover title but the lyrics are not near to what I hear. I do not speak portuguese but I do spanish and can pick a good amount of the words but Joao's portuguese is very tough to pick. He, together with Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, Ivan Lins and Elis Regina (RIP) are my favorite brazilian performers. These brazilians can sure create the best music. Brasil is a blessed country.
@terrau Thanks. As you see from the rest of the comments the confussion came from the album editors themselves which used the wrong song name. ANyways, the song is a masterpiece. Has many of those complex brazilian music chords progression (I am an amateur guitar player; sort of a wannabe; LOL) and a very difficult portuguese accent to follow.
@chironjo you're welcome. Incompatibilidade de Gênios is one of the most perfect arrangements of João Bosco and the also well humoured spirit of the lyrics (from Aldir Blanc, former long time partner) is equally great. Incompatibilidade de Gênios could be, more or less, translated to Temper Incompatibility.
I just love the delicacy on the interpretation and think that it still has a rather distinct Brazilian groove, it's just closer to a more sentimental bossa style.. But I do understand, especially considering the lyrics, that originally it was not written for this kind of style. In fact, here the lyrics sound very tragic-comic, if not sarcastic. =D
sure the joao bosco version is fine... i put this one because it is somewhat difficult to find. note for paulinho da costa´s great work in percussion. thanks for your listening and comment!
Paulinho da Costa na percussão!

Dotô,jogava o Flamengo, eu queria escutar,
Chegou, mudou de estação, começou a cantar,
Tem mais,um cisco no olho, ela em vez de assoprar,
sem dó,falou que por ela eu podia cegar,
Se eu to,devendo dinheiro e vêm me cobrar,

Depois,se eu mudo de emprego que é pra melhorar,
vê só,convida a mãe dela pra ir morar lá,
