Thanks. I enjoyed your version. I don't think anyone gives 3star ratings. My guess is somebody gave you five and some spoiler gave you one star. There are people who have a habit of doing that as they have nothing constructive to contribute themselves.
My introduction to this chestnut was from an old Weaver recording and I distinctly recall Lee hays taking the lead vocal. His bass voice was perfectly suited to the song's powerful lyrics.
Here, you have demonstrated your uncanny ability to treat the song with feeling, respect and dilligent delivery...a folk song troubador extraordinaire.
Very very nice. Thank you for putting this song up... I was trying to find the real melody, rather than the straightened out version with the minor notes (and all the coolness) erased. Nice singing.
I know the song "Rocking the Cradle" from A.L. Lloyd's album, "The Old Bush Songs". It is considered to be an Australian song of Irish Origin. I never realised its relationship to this cowboy song, as the tune is rather different in the version I know. Thanks for this information.
Dig it. Used to sing this in music class in second grade. Always liked the imagery and the minor notes, and imagined myself on the dusty trail in summer, headed west from MN through SD to WY.
TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks again, Max, for your detailed comments. Not sure where I first heard this. It may well have been from that Weavers album.

I love this song, first heard Woodys version, then Lomax's.
Its based on an Irish song called The Old Man Rocking The Cradle And Nursing The Baby That's None Of His Own.
