Im an engineer for BNSF out of vancouver washington. that is the stretch of highway 14 on the Washington side of the river near drano lake. Pretty much halfway between Stevenson and Bingen.
@ervans .....ervans......you of all people should know this is Washington, hwy. 14 looking east @ mile post 57. Ive stood on that trestle. Burlington Northern= Washington. Union Pacific= Oregon.
@loganmc1978 ......Its Washington, hwy. 14 looking east. Remember Burlington Northern runs the Washington side and Union Pacific runs the Oregon side.
@alf42069pj ......hi alf.. this is actually the east part of the cascades, the nearest city is Hood River.....you can see the east side of Mt. Hood from Hood River. Notice the mile post 57 marker? Hood River is mile post 63....from Portland.
Am I missing something here? What is so interesting about a freight train going by? We see these about 42 times a day near Chicago and they all seem very similar and make the same noise.
Lucky? It is unusual that you say that--these long freight trains immensely tie up traffic on LaGrange Road. The horn sound in the wee hours is romantic in a Dali-esk sort of way, rending the night into multiple segments of sleep, and the bulk loads of coal heading east 3 times a day are a constant reminder of the major carbon footprint we are stomping on the atmosphere. Steam engines would be interesting, but these massive, brutish diesels are just greasy machines...
Well, for most of people, trains are just annoying things, making a lot of noise and blocking traffic. For railfans, it's an object of fascination, because of the mghty power of these machines.
I just don't know why it's like that; I like to see a train going by, period.
I always wonder freight trains in the USA are too long! :) Excellent clip, 5*. The passing-by cars and trucks make this train more impressive. Thanks for posting.

jj - imagine how congested streets & highways would be if we didn't have trains like this to move cargo.
imagine the carbon footprint we'd be leaving if every load of coal, dry goods, food, & other freight were being transported by a single diesel truck.
this is the living history of America. how this country grew & prospered during good & bad times.
it's too bad you're unable to appreciate it.
beautiful video ... my dad was a train buff & he would've adored this.
