  • This Brazilian girl has blood, impressive, she is polishing, but tabém the musician's guitar is Brazilian!

  • people always say this, but I sure do wish there were a "love this" button!!

  • Sweet Jesus! She is sing in tongues!

  • why cut out at the drum solo!!!

  • Yeah Esperanza ! Teach us, teach everyone, how to sing ! What a crazy voice and talent ! Love her :)

  • just saw her in nyc. Her band is the shit!!!!!!!

  • She's exquisite!

  • Her soul is brazilian, also her song, her skin, her smile... great song !!!

  • Lallàro,larelaralurèlo...brazilian soul inside!

  • This is how it's done!!!! All you misled girls in pop music even you ego filled women in church who think your doing praise and worship!.... PURITY OF A SWEET HEARTS EXPRESSION is in motion here...I'm not saying that all women who sing have to pick up a bass etc... and that you have to look like Esperanza. look at the inner essence, Wow! She's not to be worshiped but God has put her on Earth to inspire. I pray that in this evil world, nothing will hinder Gods intention of this great talent. Amen

  • @lexgroove He has given her favor and talents that only she can deliver.

  • like her scatting? listen to Ele Cordova on" Contemporary Music of Mexico and Brazil"a Cal Tjader LP from early 60's

  • YOU LEAVE AS A POET WITH NO WORDS...YOU SOMETHING CRAZY 4REAL!

  • this woman is AMAZING. NO WORDS in the corporate dictionary to describe her. she is fully dressed

  • Este fue el primer video de Esperanza Spalding que vi en mi vida, y descubrí que aún existen maravillas en este mundo... y que maravillas!

  • whos the guitar player?

  • GREAT SONG!!... missing the batucada (Samba part)... .. =( still all props!! =)

  • Who knows the lyrics:)?

  • @andziazet I don't think there is any lyric. :) She's scatting, basically just improvising with melodies and rhythms. Ella Fitzgerald used to do a lot of that. :)

  • since i saw her performance on youtube, i fallin in love at first sight! i really love her voice and her talent! i adore her so much! and her playin on contra bass!

  • That vocal range is crazy Justin who yeah she owned that Grammy!

  • Very good, but it's mono!! #fail...

  • Wow! Not a jazz-y, but Esperanza will be my first jazz cd! She is amazing!

  • My Gosh, this girl is the real deal musical genius ...wow, to scat in that vocal range is incredible then change it up into a melodic almost background vocal on top of a pop jazz vocal like "I know you know".........compose the music, play the music sing the music....has the world been manufactured pop kool-aid that long. You are looking at musical virtuoso.....i happy to be around to see a jazz mozart being unleashed on the music world........Wow!

  • She will still be relevant when Justin Bieber wont be able to get a free hair cut at Hair Cuttery...

  • Shell still be relevant when Justin Bieger wont even be able to get a free cut at Hair Cuttery

  • Love Esperanza Spalding!!!! My Favorite part 3:09

  • @Tippy2forU She doesn't have a spectacular voice, but I think she holds her own. I have her self titled CD and I love it. At least she's a real musician unlike some of these other ladies out here who can't sing, dance, write music, or play instruments.

  • @mom2dave.. I love her. No she dosen't have a powerhouse voice, but it's fits her style of music perfect. She is real talent. But she can sing compared to Rhianna who has a average voice, but she sells millions of music. Janet Jackson is the same. They are good performers, but take away the music and listen to them. If you look at music shows now, they never have real artists who can really blow or play the hell out of a instrument. Everything is either lip-synched or a track is going

  • Incredible talent...natural beauty (love her hair). We need more artists like Esperanza and less of these ghettofied hoochie's like Nicki Minaj, Li' Kim, et al.

  • Wow!

  • Her range is incredible...omg

  • os fãs dakele muleke achoaram q ele iria ganhar de uma profª da berklee?

  • Am I the only one who can hear she is out of tune and cannot sing.

  • @Tippy2forU or you just dont understaind jazz

  • @dvpkid: I understand Jazz and Jazz is not out of tune. She can't sing. That sounds horrible. I have heard better.

Rachelle Ferrell is Jazz. Oletha Adams has an excellent Jazz CD out. Billie Holliday wonderful Jazz artist. This woman is terrible.

  • @Tippy2forU your prefrance

  • @Tippy2forU brother i think you are either frustrated or you are just jelous! that sucks just put your ass to study or change your profession dont hate on good musicians!

  • @jazzmelodicminor77:Do not curse at me. I am better than that and you should be as well. I am entitled to my opinion free of personal attacks. I commented on her ability to sing. If I don’t care for the singing, I do not download the CD. I do not entertain a lack of talent to violate my precious ear space. I commend her talent for playing musical instruments and knowing other languages but singing is not her talent. Respect my opinions and I will respect your opinion.

  • @Tippy2forU Its called improvisation. Esperanza is singin and scatin off the melody, much like Abbey Lincoln or Carmen Mc Crae. But its ok if you can't dig what she's doing, the world goes on. Check out Beyonce, sounds more your style. Btw, Lady day would have loved esperanza.

  • @Tippy2forU Hello person... How can you say respect your opinion and say that this woman cannot sing? Can you respect her talent, and keep your opinion to yourself? If not... then take the criticism you give! Have a blessed day! ;-)

  • @Tippy2forU

    LOL "this woman is terrible".

Can we please see the uploads of your jazz music videos? Your Berkley instructor credentials, vocal training, and years of improvisational upright bass playing?

Billie Holliday? Really? Can we please let go of the past and make room for the 21st century jazz artists and young prodigies such as Esperenza Spalding?

  • @Tippy2forU Actually, she is not out of tune. She merely changes keys frequently, just like John Coltrane did in his music. :) I don't know if you studied music - apologies if you did - but changing keys as often as she does is one of the hardest things to do in music. :) Although jazz is extremely hard to define - some people say Kenny G plays jazz!!!! - I personally wouldn't call Rachelle Ferrell jazz. She's bordering on pop. And so does Oletha Adams. Coltrane, Parker, Mingus = real jazz.

  • @jeannonin I agree with everything you've said here EXCEPT the comment about Rachelle Ferrell. That I don't understand

  • Can everybody STFU about the grammy' s and bieber, and just listen to talent?

    thanks, bye

  • I wanna hear her do Cant help it by MJ...she'd kill it.

  • @heiressheiress haha she does search it

  • Please come to St.Lucia for the Jazz fest!!!!!!!!

  • I have a new artist to add to the stable! Didn't know about her until the Grammy's so I commend them for that. However they will never be forgiven for not nominating Distant Relatives in ANY category.

  • its skat... which means its like a huge improv solo

  • the guitarist is cute :) lol we usually r ;) hahaha i luv how she saying all of this lyk they r real lyrics i luv 2 hear sum1 scat :)

  • LOOOOL how does she remeber the lyrics if thats what u call them

  • The intensity in her scats at the end represents a person feeling completely and frantically in love with another...like an undying explosion of someone pouring their heart out in adoration. The drums represent the response of the other: alike in the intensity; undying and frantic. Pure genius. Pure.

  • Wow you can tell it was a total experience. It's like she becomes the music, her whole body, face and voice dances to it :). It was truly enlightening to behold<3 I did not know songs had to have coherent words ... 0.o, It's like as electrifying as a mosh pit, while simultaneously being as clean as a spring of bubbling water

  • this cut off her second cd esperanza if you like this try precious, i know that you know on the same cd

  • A real artist and musician!!! Thank God!!!

  • i love her !!!!!!!! she is talented,...... knows how to share her gift .she kinda remind me of nneka and sade i wish they can do one song together !!!!!! congrats you really deserve the award 1111

  • i love her !!!!!!!! she is talented,...... knows how to share her gift .she kinda remind me of nneka and sade i wish they can do one song together

  • It's like finding a cool shade on a hot day... Boy did I enjoyed that!!!! Found someone new to add to my FAVs -3 it!!!!!

  • somehow, i understood every would she said O.o

  • scat scat scat! She sounds good when she scats. Lol

  • she sounds vocally like Floria Plurim with her Brazilain -like vocal albility and she can play that double bass the toal package. I dont criticize Justin Bieber becasue he's a harmless Disney Pop star and people like Lil Wayne, 50 Cent and Gucci Mane are more damaging because they are nothing but "racial coons" and a disgrace to serious black musicians everywhere unlike Ms. Spaulding, hopeflly her along with bands & acts from Afro- Punk and the Black Rock Coalition can save us the dreck.

  • @TheNewsoul2 Couldn't have said it better myself my friend!

  • So, this is what talent looks like? But I thought you had to sell millions of records for it?

  • @faithplusone01 talent got nothing to do with marketing

  • not my fav song of hers..but i adore esparanza

  • I never heard of her before last night and I already love her!

  • It's a Reaffirming Light to ALL REAL Artists that The Grammy's rewards REAL TALENT!!! Congratulations To Esperanza Spaulding ... The Best New Artist !!! FABULOUS, Beautiful and Talented !!!

  • FANTASTIC!!!!

  • I'd really like to know if she has perfect pitch. She's vocally navigating some really complex chords there in the intro.

  • Love that hair! Its real!!!!

  • It's great to know that there are still real musicians out there, and that corporate made pop stars can still be beaten out for a grammy...Esperanza Spalding I salute you.

  • @HavokOnePointZero just wow how retarded , can stop be amazed

  • I'm guessing your a Justin Bieber fan huh? Who really fucking cares about views? It's about the Music, not the fame. end of story.

  • @CorBinKaY76 pull your head out of your ass u homo! im sure everyone tuned into the grammys to watch esperanza! its not about music..... it about what sells!.....end of story wheather u like it or not!

  • i love her....

  • She is so incredible I love her

  • What is this mess, what are you people listening to...My sister told me today that I sound just like her... I will just say that I am not getting a record deal anytime soon.

  • @eowolo Generally speaking, if you're ignorant of style/form/dynamic/tenor and the LANGUAGE OF JAZZ...it's best to just sit silently and bobble your head and Pretend that you comprehend..until you can be mentored or educated to the point where you can appreciate, enjoy and experience la musique...long way from pre-school to PhD

  • @eowolo Jazz is not for everyone especially those who think Beyonce is "where it's at". If you don't understand this type of music just say so. This lady is also a music professor at one of the best Universities in the USA so she knows what she's doing, and some of us appreciate it.

  • @dbastard1977 Well said my friend!

  • beautifull Esperanza.

  • Wow !

    Nuff zed !

  • She is sooo special!! Exquisite!!

  • Beautiful!!! I have to watch this again! I love the part after 7 minutes

  • Maravilha!,

  • This is terrific. But she surpasses this with such joy and fantastic performance on the 'Midnight Show ' with Letterman. ' Precious' It's a truly wonderful piece of vid. ( as is 'At The White House' 'Overjoyed ' Catch them both. They are just superb cameo's of her natural joyful musicianship

  • you are a great musician!!!!

  • I love how she FEELS her music to the people, not just play, she delivers it to herself before anyone! Such a great musician!

After watching her, something just clicked & I experienced a growth spurt in my own Bass playing. Thank you Espaeranza!!! After studying with Ron Carter many years ago, I then got to watch many of your vids & see so many other possibilities, both musically & instrumentally. I am now a completely different bass player now, thx to you! - U gave me the greatest gift of all :)

  • Epic! i get goosebumps when i hear her music its incredible

  • I saw her open for Steve Wonder in LA. I never heard of her but once she began playing I was hooked. This music is full of emotion, complexity yet free. Fantastic musicianship.
