  • man you run fast

  • If that way of overtaking goes wrong, somebody will die.

  • you are welcome to East European roads with youre bike ! :) good luck...

  • @Oldsellerros That says perhaps less about cycling, and more about the bad state of driving there?

  • @lsmike maby is better to see youreself... or not! :) cheer's

  • @Oldsellerros LOL, yeah maybe! I could guess though, as I've spent time in Africa which is likely worse.

  • LOL this guy is a saaaaaaaaaaadact

  • @mektar2k7 I agree, I don't think he was a very good driver either.

  • As much as I think cyclists should be on the road you need improved roads in order for it to be safe.

  • Riding a bike on a road with no shoulder is suicidal.

  • @sjtom57 No, not really. In the UK, cycling is about as safe as walking anywhere, much safer than most people imagine. Mind you, walking is more dangerous than most people imagine too, with so many people being killed by drivers on the pavement (sidewalk).

The danger here comes from stupid drivers like this one. Since this incident I take the entire lane along this section, forcing drivers to wait a few seconds, or to overtake properly in the oncoming lane.

  • @lsmike Since this incident I take the entire lane along this section, forcing drivers to wait a few seconds, or to overtake properly in the oncoming lane.

do you do that out of the city too? when speed of the cars is higher? this is dangerous what you are doing, not only for yourself but for the cars who are on the other side, you have to know that there are people who are not thinking the same thing as you are or not thinking at all, so drive safe.

  • @P3ktoRis It's safer for me, and it's safer for everyone following the highway code. As for those speeding or overtaking dangerously, and not following the highway code, they are dangerous for everyone anyway. My actions make no difference to the risk they present to others.

  • Cyclists should not be on the road period, either drive or use public transport.

  • What are you, 'kin stupid? Of course cyclists should be in the road. Not only do we also pay for the roads via income and council tax, but we have the right to be on the roads.

As drivers, both of us are only there by privilege, not by right. If we drive badly enough our licenses can be taken away.

  • @lsmike you have a cycle license?

  • @puretroubleman No, I was talking about having a driving licence. I do have quite a lot of cycle training, including having done a cycling instructor certification.

  • you'll be road kill soon enough with drivers like that. you must really like your job!

  • Although the videos I put up aren't showing this, cycling is actually relatively safe, around as safe as walking in the UK. It could be much safer though, if a few drivers didn't behave as they do. Hence this video footage - it's a campaign to make a difference, and it's why I report every single driver that I can.

  • My advice: Get a dam car

  • I've got a very nice car, I'm just not stupid enough to drive it into central London and sit around in queues all day growing a fat ass.

For that matter even my bike is both considerably nicer and more expensive than your piece of crap car. LOL!

  • That's some dangerous bike commuting. I'd avoid roads like that at all possible, unless you're willing to take the lane. Hope you're riding with a mirror. Try riding with one of those orange flags that stick out the side of your bike.

  • soooo.....you're on a bicycle yeah?

then you shouldn't be taking up so much road.

roads are for vehicles with motors that are capable of, and DO, travel at the speed limit.

    get a life

    stop dwelling on crap.

  • Cyclists shouldn't ride in the gutter, despite what ignorant car drivers think. It's the most dangerous place to ride, and it doesn't leave room to avoid a mistake like this driver's. The correct place is to take the 2/3rds position on this road to own the lane. I made a mistake of defensive riding by riding so far to the left.

These are public highways, and there's no excuse for overtaking so closely. You'd fail your test with driving of the calibre of this chap in the video.

    KTHXBAI.

  • I ride a road bike in the city of Chicago and have seen my share/been a part of close encounters. That being said, I honestly don't think people should be riding bikes on roads like that. It's ridiculous to put yourself in a single lane where cars are averaging speeds of that kind. Sometimes having that much pride for bikers and being stubborn isn't the answer.

  • There's no pride involved at all mate, that's about the only practical road to use for my commute to work. Here in the UK public highways are for the use of all, not just car drivers.

Assertive cycling, owning the lane, solves nearly all the problems here. It's only a tiny percentage of drivers who then still overtake badly. What needs to change is their attitude, not to take bikes off the road. The more cyclists there are out there each year, the more this attitude changes.

  • @lsmike get yourself a car, that would solve the problem... :P

  • I have a very nice car, LOL! I'm just not stupid enough to want to drive it in Central London, especially because the bike is faster door-to-door, and I don't want a fat ass.

  • I don't get overtaken...:)

  • Hehehe! Good comment, that made me laugh out loud.

  • If You can't keepup with other road users, ride closer to the curb. Here in Tasmania we have the same problem with stupid cyclists,I would rather hit a moron in the way, than have a headon accident!

  • That's just stupid and ignorant driving. If it's not safe to overtake [1] then wait behind until it is safe.

[1] On this section of road it's not safe to overtake at any time, whether a cyclist rides by the curb or out in the middle. That's because the lane is too narrow, plus there's a blind rise.

  • If the road is that narrow DON"T use it fool!

  • You should learn to drive, and learn tolerance of other road users. Go and read specifically sections 163, 166, 167 and 211-213 of the UK highway code. You've just failed that required driving knowledge, and clearly need to take your test again.

So what other road am I going to use to get to work? As a cyclist, I have the right to use the road, that's why it's called the public highway after all. As a driver, I and my car are only there by license - driving is a privilege, not a right.

  • Catch the bus instead of endangering other peoples lives. As you plainly don't value your own.

Code 101 look after ones' own life as nobody else will!

  • Cycling isn't dangerous to anyone else at all, it's drivers that bring danger to the roads. Even then, cycling in the UK is roughly as dangerous as walking, in other words pretty safe. It's not helped by drivers like the above, and those with poor attitude on the roads like yourself.

Remind me again, why are you excusing the bad driving of the driver in this clip, and focusing on my quite legal and safe riding?

  • You Poms are really THICK. When I ride my bike I ride close to the edge of the road as possible, not as you are doing 0.5M from the kerb. You are mearly reinforsing the known fact (and I bet you are one of them)that riders who wear licra think they can ride in the traffic lane whwre everyone will giveway to them. I for one will not be involved with a headon accident because some idiot willnot ride close to the edge of the road. The bike will be the safer option to hit than an oncoming vehile.

  • Ahahahahaha! That really is ignorant cycling, and driving from you. 50cm is *far* too close to the kerb for safety. You should look at the photo on rule 163 of the UK highway code - look how far out the cyclist is. Also look in Cyclecraft by John Franklin, published by the Govt. Stationery office, and endorsed by RoSPA, which recommends a minimum of 60cm, and taking the entire lane in this specific situation.

  • The last time I came across an idiot like yourself I witnessed him swerve to the middle of the lane when a group of learner motorcyclists approached from behind on a 100kph road. They had to take evasive action resulting in 2 crashing. I promptly u-turned, after checking them I went after him. (He had left the scene) So I tapped his shoulder at 100kph. Next time he won't swerve in front of other road users

  • You drove into a cyclist to teach him a lesson? That's such contemptible behaviour, what a piece of scum you are.

All riders and drivers should leave loads of room when overtaking two wheelers, cyclists or motorcyclists. I'll bet that if those riders swerved and crashed, they passed way too close, instructor failure. It's the responsibility of the overtaker to leave sufficient room. Go and read those highway code rules I quoted above - this is standard and required knowledge for drivers.

  • Taking the entire lane when it is not safe is ignorant & stupid. Just because some fools have made it law doesn't make it any safer. If you continue to ride in the way eventually you will be hit (law of averages).

  • Taking the lane in this situation is *much* safer than staying to the left. It has the effect of dissuading most sensible drivers from overtaking when they know they shouldn't, but feel pressured to, and it leaves enough room to correct for the mistakes from the very few idiot drivers who do try to overtake where they shouldn't. By being out in the lane you're in exactly the right place to be seen by drivers, you're much less visible when riding to the side because of tunnel vision.

  • Again, you should ride much further out, and in this specific situation it's safer to take the entire lane on a bicycle. In a motor vehicle, you should not even be thinking of overtaking - doing so would fail you your test. Blind rise, oncoming traffic, and not enough space to overtake - that's three reasons not to make such a stupid decision.

Remind me again, who qualified as a cycling instructor, you or me?

  • Do you call yourself an instuctor? Well you better instuct your legs to pump the pedals quicker, as cars travel at 50 to 100 kmh. Do you? NO then keep out of the way or suffer a bonnet up the backside!.

  • That's a stupid and ignorant driving attitude, and you'd fail your driving test with that sort of thing. You're supposed to wait behind until it's safe to overtake. In this specific situation, you'll only have to wait a few seconds before there's space to overtake again at the bottom of the hill.

  • So what just because a bunch of pen pushers have made it law to giveway to snailpace cyclists. Next they we make it law to walk in front of all motorized contraptions with a RED flag. PUSH YOUR LITTLE LEGS FASTER ON THE PEDALS TO TRAVEL AT THE 50KPH SPEED LIMIT AND STAY OFF ALL 100KPH ROADS.Or run the risk of being a bonnet ornament, when someone can't slow to your pace intime.

  • They would be people who know a lot more about driving and riding than you do. People who are respected, and don't have the very intolerant and bad attitude towards other road users that you do.

  • I'd rather see you have a head on crash than hit a pedestrian or cyclist, jordie686, as you'd stand a far better chance of survival than the other two.

I would suggest if you have to race EVERYWHERE, as your comment seems to suggest, then perhaps you shouldnt be on the road. Your time is not that important, believe me.

  • lol idiot, you're cycling in the middle of the road, get over by the curb stupid arrogant cyclist

    they're all the same!

  • Your ignorance is showing - I should actually be cycling further out in the middle of the road here, although that still doesn't excuse the appalling overtake. It's wrong and dangerous to cycle right next to the curb.

I suggest you look at the picture in rule 163 of the current UK highway code.

  • Cycling is not a lot more dangerous in the UK than it is in the Netherlands. They are both in the same ballpark, and would be considered minimal risk. It's safer to be mixed with the other traffic than it is to be segregated on cyclepaths.

Motorcycling is a different kettle of fish, and is *much* more dangerous, mostly because of that acceleration. It's 3.5 times more dangerous than cycling, and that's including motorway miles which makes the motorcycle look a lot safer than it really is.

  • This is one reason why I've stopped cycling on the road. But the Police slap a fine on you if caught on the path. I don't think they understand how dangerous it is to bike on the road sometimes, as nobody seems to give a shit about you.

  • Whilst cycling can certainly be very intimidating sometimes, it's still actually really safe, even here in the UK. It's about as safe as walking - I'll bet that surprises you!

  • Actually, with crossings in the strangest of places, quick light changes and zebra paths miles apart, walking in the UK isn't safe as it should be. Neither is cycling. I'm Dutch, cycled all my life but stopped after trying it a few times around Manchester. Without the acceleration of a motorbike, being small in UK traffic is a bad idea.

  • did you get a reply from the company?

  • No reply - I've assumed there's no point in chasing it up, and that Simply Scaffolding are just another irresponsible company who don't care about their driver behaviour.

  • Hey Mikey.

I got taken coming down this exact same hill just last night, by a manic golf driver who then swerved last minute into the petrol station infront of me, sans indicator.

As you said in your comments above, we're only going 5mph slower than most of the cars, so why people choose to risk our lives and theirs just to shave off a few metres of road at the next stop light is beyond me...

This stretch of road, and Bromley hill, are real trouble magnets for me. Not sure why.

  • Yup! It's even more silly on the 'bent: I often hit 45 down this hill, and I'm still getting overtaken!!! (40 limit for motor vehicles)

  • That wasn't a gold coloured Golf by any chance?

  • i blame white van people/flat bed drivers. i ended up in the fucking ditch cuz some white van driving wanker decided to over take a jogger on a blind corner and she was running on the wrong side of the road.. people don't fucking think, could of wrote off my car!!!

  • Sorry to hear about your experience. Yes, it's amazing how badly some impatient people overtake!! I often see this on some twisty corners near my house, double white lines, oncoming traffic, and blind corners. Muppets!

  • piss off the road fuckin cyclist

  • LOL, idiot. Bye.

  • cyclists should be confined to the pavement, unless of course they make it mandatory to tax and insure all cycles. You just get in the way, swerve all over the place and your gay ass spandex is an eye sore yet here you are complaining.

  • Don't be silly, it's illegal to cycle on the pavement, besides which, pedestrians, horse riders and cyclists use the public highway by right.

This is your excuse for the driver's bad overtake? LMAO!

  • what are you on?? a frikken scooter>>>>>>>>

  • No, a bicycle. Not that it matters, that driver was an idiot overtaking on a blind rise and in the face of oncoming traffic. Real Highway Code stuff. *rolls eyes*.

  • yes I hear you. I hate the disrespect you get from other road users!

  • No worries! I had two more points to add, that I was doing approx 25mph here, which shows rank impatience by the Simply Scaffolding driver, and that no matter how slow someone else is driving, that will never be an excuse for such a stupid and dangerous overtake.

  • That was some extremely dangerous overtaking, but perhaps if you had been driving somewhat faster, the flatbed wouldnt feel the need to overtake. It is not always the faster drivers who cause the accidents, it is the mix of both fast driver and slow drivers that cause problems.

  • I was on a bicycle, not driving! I should have taken the centre of the lane to prevent his dangerous overtake, as it's too narrow for a motorvehicle to overtake a cyclist on this section, unless there's no oncoming traffic and they can use the other lane.

  • van drivers often forget they aren't in their own car this is worst at breakfast time, lunch time or close to knocking off time.

With the majority of bad drivers it's inattention but with a few it's down right aggression I think this is a case of the former.

Your life is worth less than the banter between three scaffolders.

  • Yes, I now take the whole lane down this stretch. It's too narrow for any vehicle to overtake a cyclist, unless there's no oncoming traffic and in which case the blighters can use the other lane.

  • The truck is already braking at the same time as overtaking, suggesting that it would have been easy and safer to wait. Truck moves in too early and takes away the cyclist's safe braking distance and forward vision. Intimidating and dangerous.

  • Scary! Although I think the driver on my recent video gave me even less room :-( (Chertsey bridge) That's some fast cycling on your recumbent Mike, I am very impressed!!

  • Yep, it's not as close as your overtake, but still poor driving. This ride is actually on my fixed wheel Langster.

  • Man that was really close..where I live alot of people do that, specially on narrow roads.

  • In Los Angeles, the first overtake would be considered an excess amount of room while the second is more or less normal. Too much of our local driver's attitudes toward cyclists has gone to the biz.

  • Hey Mate! The ATC-2000 camera has quite a narrow field of view, and so the overtakes are closer than they look in your own helmet camera. Think along the lines of the recent close overtake video you posted.

  • That was my weak attempt to express sarcasm about L.A. drivers' indifference towards cyclists. Guess it missed the mark!

  • Doh! I should know better than to take you seriously, even though you're a Leftpondian!!!!

  • I live in nearby Ontario on Holt..and believe me I hear it from alot of pt how I should be on the sidealk and other shit..which aggrivates me greatly. Why cant people just mind there effin business and wait 5-10 seconds of there lives before making stupid ass moves like he did.

  • Small penis syndrome.

  • I noticed negative feedback here. I think "therealjacmous" means the driver has the small penis syndrome, not the poster!

  • Yes, I know Jacomus, and he definitely meant the driver!
