Hi everybody, thanks for listening to Grace sing the blues...I always told her she could be a great blues vocalist. She has tremendous stage presence. In response to the comment below. David and I switched back n forth between bass and keys on live shows and studio. We were, and are close friends. David was always a strong vocalist in the band. David had introduced me to Paul and Grace at a SF studio in 72 and Grace & I wrote this number on the spot for her solo album "Manhole".Cheers,PeteSears
Poor David Freiberg! He started as the band's bass player but then Peter Kaukonen took over and David switched to keyboards. Then Pete Sears takes over keyboards and Frieberg does vocals but THEN Marty Balin comes back and David just does whatever stuff there's left...
I wish you could post 'Janitor Drives A Cadillac', on 'Papa John Creach' by Papa John Creach, featuring Miss Slick's vocals. I have not seen it on You Tube. Definitely a showstopper. Love your posts!
I made the mistake of recommending this tune to some blues purists. Well, actually, I kinda knew what I was getting into. Not everything she tries on this LIVE version works--but I'll admit--but unless you're a Bessie Smith purist, there's a lot to like here. The recorded version is a little smoother, but I like the rough edges here. And there are moments here like "refined sugar" where she actually sounds better than on disk.
Terrific..A real bluesy number with that barrel house singing and great piano from Pete Sears..She's the best!!!! From the Manhole album..I love her..What a VOICE...
Hammerogod: I was just thinking how Grace must have been trying to do a "Janis sound" on this when I looked down and saw your post. You are exactly right. And you are right again; Janis would have ripped this to shreads. I can almost hear it now... God love 'em both.
I agree she did do very bluesy stuff but in a recent interview she denied singing the blues because of her upbringing. She can't deny this is bluesy though.
Oh Across The Board is a favorite, I was happy it was included on the rather unfortunate collection that was Grace's Greatest Hits cd. At the time the Baron Von Tollbooth album wasn't released on cd. God I love Grace.
Love this era...Cipollina was my hero of the day. An old friend used to play this album alot but can I find it anywhere....what was the track which had lyrics about "a man only has one finger"

She sings Delta Blues. Don't believe nothin of what you hear; n only 1/2 of what you see. You were right.

Unbelievable! Grace's voice never ceases to amaze me. She's definitely the best female rock vocalist/songwriter ever.

Can anyone hear the strong influence of Janis in that particular song?
Janis & Grace were spending a lot of time together....and I imagine that a little of Janis rubbed off on anyone who came near her.
I love Grace Slick, I have since the 60's...but Janis would have torn that song up.
Anyway:
It is a marvelous piece of video.
Thanks

You guys have made very good points. Listen to the opening of this song and of "Turtle Blues" and it is clear that you are right.
I love both of them but I followed Grace around like a puppy in the day.

If anything, she learned from Janis to let it all hang out even more and do the blues.

Fantastic! She was always so much better in front of an audience. What a show off, but in a good way.

Yeah, well - except for that German audience that one time. "Who won the war? You &$%&@ bastards!"
