Okay she sounds NOTHING like Patti.....Patti has immense false-vibrato issues. Angel's belt resonance is directly in her mask and Patti's is a bit farther back.
Oh Angel, I pledge my everlasting devotion to you. I might be your biggest fan out here. You are so talented and so huggable! There, I've said it again.
I have the Company vocal book released after the revival and AHP is in this key. It's to my understanding that that's considered the definitive version now but I could be wrong.
I think both Angel and Pamela take on very different interpretations and I love them both equally. This is my favorite song from Company by far. <3
Loejyrrab: Ms. Desai is appearing as Pasiphae in the world premier of Marina Carr's "Phaedra Backwards" at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, NJ from Oct. 18 through Nov. 6, 2011. It's not a musical ;) My young son is playing the kid minotaur.
Too bad this is in a lower key than the original, it is really tough to sing though due to the amount of support needed with notes and lyrics that go by pretty quickly
I love her version but I hate that it's transposed! I'm playing Marta in an upcoming production and I like Angel's singing, but I can't follow this one because it's in a different key...
I get a LuPone image myself... I think it's because she gets a little nasal articulating at higher notes, which is something Patti does. It's not a bad thing at all, I rather like it...
@CardboardCreative You think exactly how I did when I first heard this!! Wow Yes I'm not the only one lol. She sounds great this is my favorite version :)
Yeah, for the most part it's okay but then when she has to hit certain high notes it actually makes me wanna cover my ears from how off strained it is. Not dissing her though, she put the effort into the part she was given.
Singing Sondheim is a challenge. Understanding what he wrote is just as much a challenge. And as far as I'm concerned this vocally pretty good. But I don't actually feel that it's understood. Probably another director who gave the vocalist the wrong instructions. But then again; who am I? Vocally this is pretty good.
I'm actually singing this tomorrow in my Musical Theatre class. Love it so much! I like her and this key waaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyy better than the original. Hopefully my director can play it in this key.

Doesn't seem like Marta. She's meant to be a lover of the city life, a urban person, yet she sounds like she hates where's she's at. The voice doesn't fit the song at all.
Plus, did they lower the key? It was already so perfect with Pamela Myers.
I think that's the purpose. I was just thinking that, the song actually sounds pretty crazy, sad, and happy... New York's positives are its negatives, in a way. Everyone knows
i really loved her in this part, and yeah they did lower the key because she is a belter. Its just a sign of the times because a voice like pamela myers (which i love) now just doesn't translate to todays audiences as a free spirit. i think theyre both great.
I don't think she sounds like LuPone. Her diction, while not perfect, is much better than LuPone's. I do agree that she's fabulous. I don't know if I like her or Pam Myers better.

@QuartanAidan I don't care where her resonance is. Her mask, her ear or her toe. I love her, just adore her. Patti too. But Angel, oh my goodness.

What the hell was that at 0:40? Close your eyes and listen to it. Is that you Patti Lupone? LOL.
How can anyone watch that part without laughing?
