I think the thing about the 599 not beeing a truely GT car is right. I have read that Ferrari sees the 458 Italia (as well as the 430 it has replaced) and the 599 as their sports cars, while they have the California and the 612 Scaglietti (which is soon going to be replaced with a newer one) as their true GT cars.
