Normal shoes with 10 - 20 mm or more of rubber in the sole do *not* absorb the shock of a landing. The rubber condenses and then *rebounds* into your foot, effectively increasing the impact force on your body. This is known as Hooke's Law in physics. It for this reason that car bumpers are not made of rubber. If they were, they'd bounce, causing more of a shock. Best impact absorption is through good landing technique, drawing out the impact over time and rolling well. VFFs are good for this.
@foxfireman188 People always get this warped opinion when I tell them I run and do PK in my Fivefingers. They say things like "won't you hurt yourself?" or "you need more padding than that." They assume that humans don't naturally have exactly what they need, as if there's one fatal design flaw. Fivefingers do more by doing less. They are probably the most apt shoe for Parkour/freerunning because they encourage your body to use its natural strength and design while increasing grip and protection
They have NO shock absorbtion. Good running shoes but NOT good parkour shoes. They will destroy your knees . Buy a good pair of dedicated free running shoes.
Buy water shoes if you don't need the toes. They are much cheaper and in every other aspect the same. Trust me I bought Vibram Five Fingers and used them for Parkour, they were broken after one month.
@htie96 in all reality its a little piece of rubber under your foot, there isn't much absorbent, don't get me wrong though they're probably the best running shoe i've worn. BUT you have to get used to them, go to the site and check it out it will explain much just know that the normal shoe creates an un-natural walking motion with all the support so changing to virbam is definitely a big change
Vibram are excellent on pretty much all fields a for a good PK shoe, the only problem is they are not shock absorbed, and they ware down pretty quick + they are over $80 sooo....
don't knock em til you tried em. they look crazy but feel awesome, you will feel like you have much more control over your stepping. i would recomend anyone try them. you will move more naturally. next best thing to barefoot.
@PrussellOwnz I use KSOs but after about 2 months they've already let me down. I ripped one toe pocket and the upper part of my big toe pocket. All I need are socks and I can cover that up. Nothing too bad. I need a pair for Parkour/Running and a pair for everyday because I love them too much to reserve them just for Parkour.
five months of KSOs, I fucked them up something serious and they ended up blistering my feet. Still the best shoe, or idea of one ... they need to have some real extreme parkour though, that was weak sauce.
i am still surfing these video clips to see fat and out of shape people with these shoes on and their reviews, i have see enough of the health nuts. lol!
@persebra haha that would be my video, although i haven't put one up. I got them like 4 months ago but i've only been running in them for a couple of weeks, the first time i ran in them my calves were killing me for a week, after that, my calves stopped hurting. i run in them at least once a week
If I were a freerunner, I would never use five fingers for anything requiring long jumps or hard landings. I definitely love the idea of them, and I'd train with them, but even with normal shoes you're putting your body under a lot of pressure. It seems like having padded running shoes is the least I can do for my body if I'm going to jump off a building.
Just to say it, it takes a while to really get your feet in shape to do what these guys are doing. And to point it out, I count five pairs of the five fingers, and the rest are running shoes. Focus is parkour training rather than the shoes, even with vibram plastered on every block, hehe. Great vid though, thanks for posting.
@PianoSynthPete ya i agree. that being said, the shock that i felt wearing my typical runners has discouraged me from running for most of my life. Realizing that recently, i will not only be running barefoot or in vibram. Finding these shoes and barefoot is a huge relief for me.
Would be nice shoes if it wasn't for such poor quality - the seams on my Classics started to become loose and rip after 2 months of light use. And I'm not the only one with problems like this..Vibram has some serious quality control issues
Everyone quit your bitching over "extreme" sports. The word is just hype and describes a different kind of danger to injury from regular sports. Extreme sports are more about obstacles and jumps, so if you mess up you run into things or land on them which sounds more scary than being hit by another human being like in "contact" sports. Each requires unique skills and strengths and being good at either is never "easy". You can't compare apples to oranges that naively guys.
This is a cool video. I like the 70's kind of camera work and the funky background music. My Vibrams were damaged in a washing machine, so I'll have to go pick up a new pair: I understand they're made of Kangaroo leather now?
why _extreme_ parkour? Strange, looks to me like a regular parkour (which is in itself considered _extreme_ form of sport activity). No need to hype up everything...
@bilbomarks Lame? Skating is easy and boring. Jumping in, through, over, under, between and around obsticals from heights, ground and walls is extreme when you put it next to some wheels on a plank going in and out of a pool. Skater fag.
@shasha2727 What I'm saying is that the parkour people are doing this with their feet, while skateboarders do this (and much more) with a skateboard. A completely foreign object. I'm saying it's easier to jump off of 20 stairs with your feet, than it is with a skateboard.
If you think it's easier to land off of high stuff with a skateboard you obviously have never stepped on one. First off, you need to master the ollie. A trick that is severely overlooked as nothing more than a jump. Let's put it this way: I've jumped off of stuff with my feet that I wouldn't have dared do with a skateboard. It's the difference between punching a target and shooting an arrow at it from 100 yards. One is much harder because you have to master a foreign object first.
yeh but on a board you cant climb or go on wet/rough surfaces, or jump far from standing still, ive boarded for like 9 years but it still gets boring fast. Parkour is about pushing what the human body beyond what seems possible but skating is about ego, plus i prefer parkour cuz its more flexible in what you can do and can be done anywhere
It only get's boring when your skill stagnates. If you keep learning and experimenting the tricklist is limitless. Also pretty much every sport (extreme or not) is about pushing the human body (there are records for every sport and their constantly being broken) Also skateboarding being about ego is your opinion. Anything can be about ego. Parkour is about ego. I just said that, but it doesn't make it true. All the reasons your giving are opinion based. For what I was arguing, i proved my point.
but 99% of skateboarders are obssesed with what "looks" good and are willing to get extremely disapointed, sad and disheartened just to land the "best looking" trick. Ive been doing tricks on Skateboards, Rollerblades, BMX, All Terrain Board, Mountain Bike ect for more than half my life, for me i have realized that the persuit of "tricks" isnt worth the time/effort, extreme sports limit the body in sooooo many ways and all they give to the body is usually wheels. I now persuit freedom of movemnt
Besides pulling that statistic out of your ass you're also wrong about the "looks" thing. What I think you're talking about is called style. And in high level skateboarding it's not something you "add" to the trick. It's something that comes out naturally. It's the way you're body looks and moves during a trick. You seem to come from a view that only sees skateboarding through tv and the x games. I don't blame you for your POV, it's just limited.
@bilbomarks i know its about fun and messin around but my point is that the majority of skaters will run around the earth just to land a trick that wont be anymore satisfying than an ollie,i like ollieing on a board and maybe a kickflip once in a while but anthing more doesnt give me any more pleasure that the ollies and ive seen alot of skaters be more glad to land an ollie over somthin and look waaaaaay more pleased than landing some kinda freaky fakie 360 backflip crp.
You really just don't understand. I can now tell that you never got far in skateboarding. In MY experiences learning a new trick is probably the most satisfying. Satisfaction is completely preference. Also you keep saying the "majority" like you surveyed every skateboarder and you didn't. These are presumptions that you have and are unhealthy. watch?v=gUbqSIgqQy8
you are contradicting yourself, you are "presuming" i didnt get far in skateboarding, i learnt new tricks easily and regularly, boring and i doubt that the skaters in my skateparks are much different from others... The reason most skaters feel good when they do somthing new is cuz its more of a relief from the hours of effort just to land a difficult trick rather than the success its self, ive seen 100s of skaters seem the same, if they did it 1st time it wouldnt be as epic.
I just got my pair.(kso's) I love them but they are so hard to put on it's ridiculous. If you have between ten and twenty minutes to put them on, they are fantastic! AND, THANKS VIBRAM!! FOR THE IDEA!! I AM NOW GOING TO INVENT A SIMILAR SHOE THAT WILL NOT MAKE PEOPLE CRAZY TRYING TO PUT THEM ON!!
thanks BD...(Brother deryazzi) I love the shoes! I can't begin to tell you how they make me feel. They are like a Harley, if ya have to ask, you wouldn't understand! and by the way THANKS VIBRAM! I WAS ONLY KIDDING ABOUT MAKING MY OWN SHOE....lol.....GREATEST SHOE IN HISTORY!
There's a famous traceuse out there...can't remember her name...They exist, they're just a bit rare. Look it up on Youtube; I'm sure you''ll find something.
@pr3ts3l The shoes in the video game mirrors edge are a take on the japanese shoe called tabi. They are frequently referred to as ninja shoes although ninjas never wore them. They are the most popular shoe type in japan. They are also a minimalist design with little to no cushioning and designed to feel like you are barefoot. Vibram got the idea from the japanese they just added more toes and minimallized the design while making it look freaking awesome!
I own two pairs of tabi. A traditional japanese pair from rukia which are super comfy and light and I loved tumbling and martial arts in them, and another pair from ayyawer which is a tougher post apocalyptic design. it is tougher but the design makes them much heavier and less flexible however they look super cool and I can still tumble in them.
Not padding, the goal is to make it as much like being barefoot as possible, because your feet have natural padding, springyness and shock absorbtion already.
There's hardly any protection in the shoes. Its basically like being barefoot with an extra layer of rubber under the sole to protect against friction, glass, rough ground etc. That is the whole point though, it allows the muscles in your feet and calf to strengthen and move naturally, and train you to absorb shock naturally without cushioning.
@UltimateUniverse i don't know about hardly any protection. A better name for these shoes would be Vibram SuperFeet.
I was running near a demolition site and my left foot landed square on a rusty nail, right behind my middle toe. It hurt pretty bad, and I thought it had gone thru, but the nail had broken off at the surface of the plank it was in, and the shoe was unscathed! I know there isn't kevlar in the sole, but sometimes it sure seems like it!
Contrary to popular belief, tilted camera angles don't make things more exciting.

CoolParkourName 2 years ago
You really just don't understand. I can now tell that you never got far in skateboarding. In MY experiences learning a new trick is probably the most satisfying. Satisfaction is completely preference. Also you keep saying the "majority" like you surveyed every skateboarder and you didn't. These are presumptions that you have and are unhealthy. watch?v=gUbqSIgqQy8
bilbomarks 2 years ago
you are contradicting yourself, you are "presuming" i didnt get far in skateboarding, i learnt new tricks easily and regularly, boring and i doubt that the skaters in my skateparks are much different from others... The reason most skaters feel good when they do somthing new is cuz its more of a relief from the hours of effort just to land a difficult trick rather than the success its self, ive seen 100s of skaters seem the same, if they did it 1st time it wouldnt be as epic.

Calling them shoes is incorrect. They should be called hides or rubber skin.

False. They are feet gloves.

yourr foot is a natrual shok absorber. once you get used to it, it should like like with shoes. an if it still hurts when you land you should roll.

I just got my pair.(kso's) I love them but they are so hard to put on it's ridiculous. If you have between ten and twenty minutes to put them on, they are fantastic! AND, THANKS VIBRAM!! FOR THE IDEA!! I AM NOW GOING TO INVENT A SIMILAR SHOE THAT WILL NOT MAKE PEOPLE CRAZY TRYING TO PUT THEM ON!!
billywest56 2 years ago
it'll get easier to put them on after one or two times :) hang in there.

mirrors edge has cameltoe shoes not these
pr3ts3l 2 years ago
@pr3ts3l The shoes in the video game mirrors edge are a take on the japanese shoe called tabi. They are frequently referred to as ninja shoes although ninjas never wore them. They are the most popular shoe type in japan. They are also a minimalist design with little to no cushioning and designed to feel like you are barefoot. Vibram got the idea from the japanese they just added more toes and minimallized the design while making it look freaking awesome!
TheNinjalazer 1 year ago
I own two pairs of tabi. A traditional japanese pair from rukia which are super comfy and light and I loved tumbling and martial arts in them, and another pair from ayyawer which is a tougher post apocalyptic design. it is tougher but the design makes them much heavier and less flexible however they look super cool and I can still tumble in them.

are there much protection in these shoes??
iwanttofight69 2 years ago
Not padding, the goal is to make it as much like being barefoot as possible, because your feet have natural padding, springyness and shock absorbtion already.
cyberprime 2 years ago 2
There's hardly any protection in the shoes. Its basically like being barefoot with an extra layer of rubber under the sole to protect against friction, glass, rough ground etc. That is the whole point though, it allows the muscles in your feet and calf to strengthen and move naturally, and train you to absorb shock naturally without cushioning.
UltimateUniverse 2 years ago 11
@UltimateUniverse i don't know about hardly any protection. A better name for these shoes would be Vibram SuperFeet.
I was running near a demolition site and my left foot landed square on a rusty nail, right behind my middle toe. It hurt pretty bad, and I thought it had gone thru, but the nail had broken off at the surface of the plank it was in, and the shoe was unscathed! I know there isn't kevlar in the sole, but sometimes it sure seems like it!
XxxThePsyCheMisTxxX 1 year ago
Non:> You're your own protection. They make it easier to hall arse and stick to stuff. Just don't land on your heel!
