What's really funny is that Florida recently implemented a mandatory drug test for people receiving welfare checks because apparently all poor people do drugs. Only 2% of the welfare recipients failed the test. Since, every drug test costs $30, it added up very VERY quickly, costing the Florida tax payers an additional $200,000.

I do know a couple people who take advantage of unemployment or disability, but they are the shadiest two people I know; truly 1 in 1,000.

I've long held that as long as there is incentive in America, taxation is not going to make or break our economy. It is highly advantageous to have a safety net so that workers and entrepreneurs take risks. Would you open up a risky business, knowing that if you failed you and your family would be homeless and destitute? Probably not.

The reason people slowed in their spending was not because they had NO money. It was because they had been spending money they did not have. Buying homes that they could not afford the mortgage, and credit card debt so high they can't make the minimum payments. Unemployment insurance is not to stimulate the economy, it is to make sure you have the basics till you can find a job.

@ToxicOdiousOne - Did you know that several companies have started to separate applications so that they are only interviewing people who are currently employed, and not interviewing the unemployed because they think they're laxy or incompetent? Some people are confused about Unemployment ,it is not welfare, it is insurance that employers pay into. When someone becomes unemployed the employer has to pay. This whole extension thing is a embarrassment to our country and this needs to be passed over other things first. Getting a job is not that easy these days, working at walmart does not cut it. I think instead of worrying about unemployment benefits, we need to work on job creation. We need to invest more heavily in our infrastructure, provide aid to the states in order to keep teachers employed, and raise taxes on the wealthy.

@LoveToday8, I mostly agree, but I would respectfully take issue with 2 of your premises: (1) Although, both parties are beholding to big organized money (large corps. and the very wealthy), every so often the Dems will rear up and bite their paymasters, while the Republicans are just 100% proxies/stooges for those interests, and (2) I don't think the things you mentioned, are, or should be, mutually exclusive with extending unemployment benefits, which have a real stimulative economic effect.

That is quite a difference. Unemployed Americans spend unemployment benefits in America and in doing so increase the profits of American companies which in response are liable to start hiring workers. That is one way to create jobs that Republicans oppose.

@firespinguy If you look back in history, you will see that high taxation does not lead to high unemployment. The businesses that are offshoring jobs are offshoring them because they would prefer to pay someone less money in another country. If the U.S. had a single-payer health care system, that could help stop SOME of the bleeding of jobs. I know the U.S. lost out on a Toyota car plant to Canada because health care costs are lower in Canada.
