I'd recognize that noise anywhere. You, my friend, are experiencing the all too common and all too infamous Desk(Death)Star failure. Stay away from those drives if you value your data.
It's a popular saying" You don't know how valuable your data is. Until you lose it" Sucks mighty hard tho when you can't afford 1000's of dvd-r's or raid1 :(
external drives do indeed also fail. but it's very unlikely to have two drives fail at the same time. also they dont fail as fast because they aren't connected all the time. I use a wd passport 320 gb. i have it lying on my desk all the time and like every two weeks i connect it, let it run for 10 minutes and disconnect it.
I hate that sound, happend to me mutch to often. I have a second HD in my pc for backup, and behind me 2 HD with the same data. So I have a backup for my backup, and a backup. lol Aim not shitting you guys lol
If you hear this noise, BACKUP NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ANYTHING YOU HEAR THAT IS NOT NORMAL OUT OF ANY PART OF YOUR COMPUTER, ESPECIALLY THE HARD DRIVE SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN LIGHTLY!!!! If your HD has allready failed completely, there are services that can get the data off of the HD, like DiskSavers :)
TELL THOSE NIGGAZ IN THE HOOD AND LAZY COMPUTER USERS TO BACKUP THEIR DATA!!!
disk failure is no joke! Loss of data can sometimes mean the difference between a catastrophic failure of a project, and archived data available for documentaries and recaps!
how do you back up your data, and will you have to install a new OS if a hdd failure occurs? cause mine hums and makes tiny noses and i want to be safe
there is no "servo" in the hard-drive, at least not in the new ones, the precision is not high enough. Instead the heads "travel" on "pillow" formed by an electric field
i no its spam but iwas bored so did wat iwas told DON'T READ THIS I'M SOOOO SORRY EVERY1!!! If you do not copy and paste this onto 10 videos your mom will die in 4 hours
The disk isn't spinning as fast as it should be. The clicking is the hard disk checking for the required speed, and the arm only goes onto the disk when it has been running for a while because it has built up more speed. You can't repair the motor yourself, so either take it to a data recovery centre or buy a new hard disk.
its the motor.. under it it has extremely fine ball bearings that keep the disk turning and creating minimum turbulence (shaking) in the process. its what allows HDs to run at 15k rpms or more
well it stores all your data like the OS files, program files, and documents, so yes. RAM also stores temporary memory but you dont NEED RAM (your computer will be extremely slow though). There is also processor cache, which is kind of like "super" RAM but is limited to about 2-8 mb
Its almost as if the hdd's head position sensor has just died. Ive never seen thus far, the inner workings where the heads are right off the edge of the disk!
that actually reminds me something... what if one day suddenly my HDD with full load of data ends up like this.... what about yours? make a good back up regularly man! lol
If you hear any weird noises, BACKUP NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ANYTHING YOU HEAR THAT IS NOT NORMAL OUT OF ANY PART OF YOUR COMPUTER, ESPECIALLY THE HARD DRIVE SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN LIGHTLY!!!! If your HD has allready failed completely, there are services that can get the data off of the HD
@leetwaffle exactly. That's only if you've got very important data on there, like something you've been working on for a year and your job expects it in a week, or a extensive library of family pictures or something like that.
Yes... Harddrives can go bad if they are exposed to non particle free air, wesern digital used a plastic called poly carbonate to have a window on their hard disk.
cumesoftware, the 'parking zone' is the closest track to the hub, not on the edge. The head should position itself tight to the hub when turned off/inactive.
Its always good to see people do not know how things work.
Hard drives are sealed for very good reasons. The heads float above the platters using the bernoulli effect. This gap is smaller than the width of a human hair, hence dust causes problems and now we realise why they are sealed
On most hard drives, yes. But this one (An IBM/Hitachi Deskstar no doubt) has a ramp for the heads. The heads are exactly where they are supposed to be. However, my guess is some sort of firmware issue, since it fails before it even tries reading the platter, at first.
hard drives usually come with cases, and u cant see the disks? have you removed yours and replaced it with a bag? if so it changes th pressure and fucks it up
Actually, there is a hole in every hard drive (usually says "DO NOT COVER THIS HOLE" or something to that effect) that allows the pressure to balance out. They all have methods of keeping particulates out, mainly via a simple filter, but hard drives are not pressurized in any way, shape, or form. I cut and covered a hole in the cover of a hard drive once to watch it run and it read and wrote fine. It's only really a problem if particulates get on the head.
pressure has nothing to do with hdd functionality, actually disks even have a tiny airhole with a moisture filter, to even the pressure with the pressure outside of the disk case.
I hate when that happens. My friends xbox hdd started that after 2 years, and... I had one go that way about... a month ago. I also have a hdd that used to shut off randomly, and now I use it as an external for back-up... smart huh. Hasn't gave me one problem since I took it out of that PC though.
Goddamn you people bitch. Read the title and maybe you wouldn't watch it. It's exactly what's described. thought it was pretty interesting. Would be curious to know what causes the drive to totally f*ck up like that.
