  • Personally, i love this game. It was one of my favorites, and its actually very good. The controlls need to be learned, but they arent that hard. If you cant get the controlls, then its you, and this game isnt something you should be playing.

Also, the story is amazing, so thanks for leaving that part out completely.

  • Defender 2 on PS3. Make it happen Midway :D

  • I fucking love this game! And fuck this Guy! Can't get the controls, wow then you shouldn't play games you retard! This game rules and is funny and easy! I want it for the ps3

  • Just got it over the weekend. I at first thought the aiming and controls sucked, but after playing for a while I got used to it. I was rescuing and killing manti with ease. I do however agree that it's not for everyone. you need to have some pretty good handling of the ship to not miss colonists or power ups.

  • Used to play this game as a kid and just mess around and get stuck on the ground because I did not know what the controls were.

  • You didn't even mention the music.. I loved this game so much.

    >.>

    <.<

  • ha ha ha both x 4

  • Still better than Cybermorph on the Jaguar.

  • I actually beat the game to the end and i finally came upon the end video where the ship was being launched at planet earth and the game froze! stupid kids -_-

  • ngc is better

  • At least it's somewhat hilarious to see how the rescued civilians hang on to the player spacecraft's wings as if it was a leisured flight over a pasture.

  • Rented this back in the day and it wasn't bad at all. Certainly worthy of the name "Defender" -- it became insanely hard very quick. Wasn't good enough for $40-$50 purchase though but certainly worth $10-$15 used. And the original fanboys need to wake up, eat crow, and admit it: Stargate made Defender look like the glorified beta it was much like Smash TV did to Robotron 2084 ...

  • This should have been made for the N64 X}

  • whats the name of the song in the last level

  • haters wanna hate

  • i disagree this is an awsome game

  • i disagree i loved this game when i played it and i think they did a very good job at making it (granted i havnt played the orginal feel free to call me out on that)

  • This version looks so boring.... lol.

  • Man I used to got this game for gamecube and I had fun playing this game when I was 8 or 9 years old.

  • I remember beating this game multiple times as a kid and loving it to death. The only thing I remember being bad about this game is the storyline. I love fast-paced, frantic action and I good challenge

  • i think defender was as great as the original defender arcade game, just with better graphics

  • ITs easy you just suck sorry but you suck at this

  • fuck u this game rules

  • lol i beaten this game when i was like 8 years old and itr was one of most difficult games i have ever played

  • oh and for all the shit that you guys said that was too hard, ive never had a problem with that. (played on normal too)

  • Uhm, dont wanna hate but, since this is Yours to review, i understand the control's more than what my middle school teacher taught me in math class, this game is pretty sick and if it was a Defender 2 for PS3, the graphics, controls,UI, and etc would been upgraded to its full potential as a Space Combat Genre game.

  • this is my ALL TIME FAVORITE GAME!!!

  • I just picked it up I'll review it too

  • @Ushiodma yea it is one of the best ps2 games ive ever played but there is a few minor problems, but i love the way u can make anti missiles and tanks :)

  • whenever i think about this game i say dont play it. u know why? its so hard to control it especially catching falling marines and stuff!!!

  • I don't what the heck this guy is talking about... this was one of the best I've ever played. o-o

  • this is one of the best ps2 game i ever played in my opinion. the graphics are good, the story is good, the strategies are good. finally, i could think this game is a sandbox because you can stay as long as you want in a level like survival or exploring

  • I definitely enjoyed this game, but I've only played the arcade version a few times so I don't have that loyalty to the original concept.

I really liked how this game successfully integrated RTS elements while preserving good space shooter gameplay. I never got tired of assembling little armies of tanks and missile crawlers to help defend positions or even attack enemy bases.

  • wtf this game was awesome

  • dont you think your being just aliiiiittle harsh, i actually liked this game. it was my first one!!!.

  • lol controls are just fine. it just depends on the person and in his case they didnt work out for him. and lmao guess he couldnt haul ass and kill the swarms fast enough to save those colonists XD

  • O_O 5:21

  • ok so last i played this game was probably about 6 years ago or so and it was awesome util it got so scratched up i couldnt play it anymore.. so i was looking through my closet when i came across some of my ps2 games and defenders was in there and it still doesnt work! but my conlusion is I NEVER FOUND OUT HOW TO UNLOCK EARTH FOR CO-OP MODE!! and i searched all over the internet for and still cant find it! if some knows how to unlock it then please tell me cuz i already beat the game

  • I thought this game was awesome when I first played it

  • I cant understand how you think the controls are weird/awkward. i can remember playing this a couple years back and they seamed fine to me....

  • its a ok game exept it freaks me out when they eat the colonists. when i was 8 it gave me the creeps. yes the levels get annoying but very fast game play makes it fast. 2 play is very god though. the original one sucked in 2 play XD

  • Your right, it's great for a 3D Spaceship game, but the name DEFENDER just doesn't fit. I have the game, but it just doesn't fit in my type of gamestyle. I just hope they don't make another Remake of this again...

  • Man, years back I rented this game from Blockbuster. Loved it so much. Hard ass game though near the end. I don't care how much of a bad variation of the original it is, its still fun, and I actually did get good with the controls.

  • Man, years back I rented this game from Blockbuster. Loved it so much. Hard ass game though near the end.

  • I got this game on Gamecube I think its pretty good just some of the mission are annoying as hell like when your getting to the end

  • I fuckin hate this game don't be fooled by the environment this game is one of the worst games ever created so many bad memories from this so called game

  • Got this game....yeah, it's terrible.

  • Don't trust a single review these guys do. They have NO idea what the heck they're talking about. They probably worship the XB360, Halo, and COD like 80% of today's corrupt gaming community these days. Don't get me wrong, the XB360 and 90% of its titles are awesome, they just don't deserve as much fame as they get.

  • I'm replaying Defender as i write this comment. Its been several years since i last played it, and i forgot HOW AWESOME THIS GAME IS. I'm playing through every last mission, something ive never done before. Its been really challenging. I think you may have been a little too harsh on this game. in my opinion most of the missions really know how to get your adrenaline flowing, and its not a bad game at all! I just finished the dreadnaught mission which i never played before... Holy crap.

  • I begin too feel that I was probably the only one too have actually aced the controls of defender now...

  • i played it.. most.. stressfull.... annoyingly... stupidest! fun game ever :/ but i still hate it. it was a fun game but not enjoyable :/

  • @aznredragon629 Yeah i kinda feel that way about mine thos missions getting to the end were so annoying it didnt make since to me and still dont lol

  • at 5:17 that look wrong. a guy getting inside someone butt.

and also in the defender it is not about savin the colonist. you just lose point if you don't save them but if you do wanna save them you earn points and also if you put them in the dropzone such a a tank dropzone it will give you a tank or a missle craweler or just drop the coloniest in the Heatlh dropzone and in the top of it give you health.

  • @ReverandTurner 3d doesnt work for every game. not by a long shot

  • @ButerandToast and anyone can say the exact same about what games you like and dont like

  • are u high mark? this game was awesome!!!

  • I think if rescuing colonist was turned into a mission objective senerio instead of a part of the goal n shoot element it would work and maybe a 3-d classic defender mix and the standard circle radar ... i dont know

  • ..and if there would not be more than shooting, he would complain about that there is not more else to do. But the game is not a really good game, and Defender 2D was good because it was a computer game and you were able to shoot! He never played that game, that's for sure. He would gonna say Starship Assault is too slow on the planet, but a great game he likes. And it's not on his Playstation.

  • @Me StarFOX Assault of course

  • @FSXflyermaster he did say he doesnt like the controles....plus, the game looks kinda generic anyways. most space shooters are

just because he doesnt like it you take a awipe at his voice? gow up, its just a game he is giving his thoughts on

  • @Xegethra *swipe

  • NOOOOOO I LOVED THIS GAME...

  • If you like witty cutscenes and voiceovers, play the Ratchet and Clank series.

  • Still not as bad as the 3D Metal Slug Remake

    *Shudder.

  • this game was the best for gamecube one of my favs

  • Maybe this game would better if they just made a Star Fox clone! LOL

  • OMEGA BOOST is way better, as he said. A true gem for the PS1. (designed by the guy who did Macross/Robotech...awesome)

  • I actually enjoyed Defender. It's been years since I played it, but I don't recall having any real problems controlling the ship. I'd advice anyone playing it to use a controller with a turbo fire feature, though. IIRC, it's one of those games that expects you to hammer away at the fire button as if it were 1985 again.

It's worth noting that the XBOX version of Defender supports custom soundtracks, which probably helps, because I don't recall the original soundtrack being very inspired.

  • i actually had this game... IT SUCKS!!!

  • Beautiful animations, good 3D game (that remember "Shockwave" for 3DO) but I still prefer to continue playing "Defender" on my Atari 2600.

  • You should do game room on Xbox 360 arcade. its a good game.

  • They named this Defender? Wow - the Idea wasnt that bad but this just doesn't work.

  • Looks tedious, but with cool cutscenes.

    Interesting...!

  • Yes it's a challenging game for sure, but once you figure out the general layout it helps. Ships vary a LOT in potential for life or death. The original, the thin black one, or the last one you get towards the end fully powered can tear stuff up but the others are just sheer junk. That nasty limited range beam cannon some craft get is insane on damage. This game may be not a $50 title when it came out $40 would have been fair, but in no way it's bad except to unaccepting arcade fanboys.

  • For a bargain bin game, Defender for the PS2 looks pretty cool. I'd never pay full price though.

  • It's a decent game, I have it. But it's hard, I'm stuck on a certain level. The enemies are ruthless and numerous, and you have to learn the levels well for where the colonists are, and where to deploy your allies, so you can't just pick it up and start blasting, or you'll lose. And you get swarmed and blown out of the sky a lot too.

  • All in all, it can be a very frustrating game, but if you put the effort in, it can be rewarding. You'd better be good at this type of game too if you want to survive, because it is hard.

  • @Lorric101 I STILL can't beat the last level

  • @cika1234 I don't think I'm anywhere near the last level.

  • @Lorric101 Get CodeBreaker or get cheats. Trust me, you need to cheat.

  • @nazeres1 Woo! That's the first time I've got into the highest rated comments bit as far as I know. I haven't played Defender since I put that. Maybe I will again someday.

  • @Lorric101 feels good hé :D

  • @rolle16 Yes :)

  • @Lorric101 what level are you stuck on???

  • @Lorric101 Died at Earth

  • @Lorric101 i beat the entire game and i agree its hard until you get the most powerful lazor upgrade then ur blowing the aliens out of the sky even those huge slow ones are realtivey easy to kill at least when i played last however its been along time so im not 100% sure

  • It has the same blaster sound effect of the original!

  • Thank you for this video review. Wow, defender. I remember when I first played that game back in '82. I didn't do too well my first time around so my mom bought the Atari 2600 version and I whiled away the hours on that one. But this one, I don't know what to say. It looks interesting. I might buy it, I don't know.

  • LOL. The lady at the end had said "Sarcasm acknowledge". Nice Review.

  • Totally agree with you Mark!!! The problem is Defender was not meant to be a 3D game. The controls aren't the best. A 2D remake with enhanced graphics would have been the better way to go. Great Review!!

  • I have this on gamecube-same exact game as far as I know. I didn't think it was bad, but I never played the original then again. It certainly didn't reinvent the wheel of spaceship simulator shooters. And the 2nd-to-last mission on the Moon,so annoying...

  • loved the review, its good to see you review a bad game for a change

  • @LewdCrudeTattoo Youre so stupid, how is reviewing a bad game ripping of the AVGN, first off, people have reviewed bad games before James Rolfe, and CGR had been around since Golden Eye on the N64! But, you are so narrow minded that you wouldnt know that would you? Also, the AVGN's thing is yelling and uh I dont know GETTING ANGRY.

  • @TypingBlank

Lol why did all you AVGN fanboys come from ???

Anyhoo.... Why do you say he's ripping AVGN off ?? Mark has been reviewing games since what 1998 1999 ??

  • no, he didn't get off his rocker and go ape shit. He still did a mark review :D

  • Mark was reviewing games about 7 years prior to AVGN. He and the other guy(dave?) pioneered game reviews on video.

  • @SoApBoX

I find it sad that people need to be reminded of this fact. But the truth is the truth.

  • @SoApBoX A more accurate statement would be Mark and Dave pioneered game review videos on the internet, there were video game review shows on TV and distributed on VHS at least 10 years before The Classic Game room. Otherwise I agree completely. I really wish the AVGN would ease up on being full of himself though.

  • @SoApBoX I don't understand your point. AVGN has a differant style then mark.

  • this game looks like it was the wrong idea.

  • I loved the original.

  • I thought it was a good game. Also, it it looked like you were having trouble with the inverted y-axis. You should have changed it.

  • @Gabumon54321 Dude, old games tend to be in full screen, you know 4:3, I dont think Widescreen Tv's were used back then.

  • Uh... I apologize for asking, but what does that have to do with my comment?

  • Nevermind.

  • much :D

  • i was just thinking of this game tonight then i see the review lol

  • great review dude

  • Cold man cold...I think you're hating on this due to your love of the works of Eugene Jarvis alone as you barely even reviewed it other than just found reasons to hate. I loved the old games of that gaming master, and I also really loved doing this game. And in doing I mean helping bring it to market, I was on the Gamecube version of the game and I still enjoy the game to date. The challenge is stiff, levels are good, and the designs vary and are good. It's no 9 but a low 8/high 7 for sure.

  • Mark!!!? The game is EPIC! I thought for sure youd dig it man! The controls are tight, it's true to the original, and the presentation is amazing. Oh I love this game dude. Anyway, great vid as always bro!

  • So, basically, it would be a better game if it wasn't called "Defender".

  • I won this game in a drawing at a local store when it had just come out and was still worth 50 bucks. Since I didn't have a PS2 at the time, I sold it for around 8 bucks. Now I'm glad I did.

  • i don't know why, but those cut scenes remind me of the cutscenes in SC1

  • This still looks cool. Problem is it has the wrong name. This would have been better without the classic name because it's a high standard to live up to

  • Yeah, I remember this game. It was near impossible for me when I played it as a kid.

  • i loved this game

  • CGR ur awesome :D

  • lol he warned me about this on playstation home yesterday. XD

  • lols yea i have this for gamecube too

  • lol.. this one is a combination of 2 multipilied by 4........ wow dud you really know how to crack me up... haha...

  • this game sucks big time. i am gald i never played that game when i had ps2.

  • When I first saw that you had a review for this poop, I thought, what good could he have to say about it? I hated this remake.....It is so lame

  • when ur gonna review MLB 10 THE SHOW for ps2?!?!

  • ow, i had the ps2 spyhunter, i liked it back then, but that could be by inmatured mind, i know it was better than the night rider game :P

  • they should have left them 2 b mutants, then they would b able 2 make a better game haha =b

  • i hate this game

  • I feel sorry for the guys mother who made this game, it looks shit, I dont like arrrrrrgggggg.

  • man i remember how kickass these graphics used to be.

  • im sick of 3d remakes of games cuase they always take to much away from the original game they should take certain things from the originals and add new things to enhance the 3d enviroment

  • Does anyone have a recipe for spaghetti bolognaise they care to share?

  • LOVED THIS GAMEEE

  • I am a fan of the original Defender, and the last time I played this game, I had a fun time.

  • wow i always wondered what defender in 3d would be like...

  • By the look of the videos, you'd need to explain why the control are crappy, because what was shown looked alright.

  • i played this one on the xbox it was so so but i had no problem with the control

  • Omega boost reference FTW!

  • love this game

  • I had this on XBOX and you can add your own sound track like playing it to Megadeth

  • It looks like it borrows ideas from various other flying games.

  • I loved that game. Played through it a couple of times. I just saw it the other week in the bargin bin and thought about getting it again. Love Your Reviews keep it up!!!

  • i have this on the GC, and even tho it gets really hard after the first few missions and i never beat it, i still enjoyed it.

My favorite thing i remember was co-op.

There was this mission where you had to defend the base from those big red spiders, and me and my friend would collect as many guys to creat an entire tank defense that made the mission really easy and fun.

  • you should review SubTerrania for the sega genesis, amazingly hard space shooter with tough controls

  • Comment removed

  • Problem is m8ty you cant beat the original game they might have better grathics but gameplay is what makes a game thats the problem with most modern games in my view these days .

  • @bobnudd i concure

  • @bobnudd I agree. This is why Wii is the best console. True gameplay beats better graphics

  • Whatever helps you sleep at night.... The Wii is for casual gaming, we all know this.

  • yes the wii is MAINLY casual gaming - but wot about madworld? HOTD overkill? resi? if you dig through the casual crap, you can find some good games

  • OMG this was one of my first ps2 games! :D

  • Great review. I will stear clear of this title because I just don't like the look of it.

  • Never played this, thank god! I wonder what Mark would think of Gauntlet: Legends, Dark Legacy, and Seven Sorrows.

  • @nintendoboy17 it won't ruin you for life.I turned out ok

  • lol that mutant thing at the end of the video sounded like a tiger.

  • I thought this game was really fun

Ah well.. to each their own

  • i loved this game

Maybe because i played it on game cube ?????

  • I'm sick of remakes---especially film remakes (e.g. Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, Get Carter).

  • Well you wont like my mercs remake then matey.

  • I have never played this game. Glad I did not buy this game when I was younger. Great review Mark!

  • Why do companies ALWAYS try to make games 3D, some games do not work in 3D

  • what happened at the end? the alien became red after eating the guy and ran away? right....

  • My dad bought this game on Gamecube... And never played it. God, this game is bad. I remember me and my sister trying to go against each other on multiplayer, where we spent half the time trying to find each other, then the rest of the time staying completely still and going very close to each other to try and get a single hit in. Worst game I've ever played on the Gamecube.

  • i thought this game was the shit when i was like 8 hahaha

  • 3:50, why are you flying a ywing/? haha

  • THis game is terrible, I was only to play it for 5 minutes or so before turning off my PS2. Convienently i didnt buy it, a friend
