These guys sound just as good if not better than they did in 1961. I had the pleasure of seeing and meeting them in Vegas at a doo-wop convention 4 years ago. Long live doo-wop and the Tokens!
This song from February of 1961 was Jay Siegal and the tokens first hit record and one of their best, second only in sales to The Lion Sleeps Tonight. The tokens were formed in 1955 and performed mostly in the New York, New Jersey area until this record put them on the charts. As of a few years ago they still peformed nation wide and as this video expresses, they sound just as good as when they started. Talented group and great personalities!
This song was The Tokens' first major hit. It was released on the Warwick label in 1961, went to #15 on the Hot 100, and got them onto Bandstand. Thanks to that appearance, they were able to move and record the now iconic "The Lion Sleeps Tonight."
IMHO, however, this song is far superior and highly underrated!
are you 16 or over and can sing and live in Germany ...and have what it takes like these guys to rock the world....if you think you have it...then PM me
The gentleman in the blue jacket singing lead is Jay Siegel, the original lead singer of The Tokens.
The two men to the immediate left and right are Phil (L) & Mitch Margo (R, w/guitar), also original members. On the far ends are Eddy Rezzonico (L) and Bill Reid (R).
The line up you see is actually a combination of 2 touring groups.
At the time this was filmed, Jay, Bill, and Eddie were performing as "Jay Siegel & The Tokens" and The Margo Brothers, along with other Margo family members, toured simply as "The Tokens."
Since the time of this performance, Eddie has passed away (as told to me by Bill Reid himself) and been replaced by Jay Traynor, original lead of "Jay & The Americans."
This same lineup, with Jay replacing Eddie, was seen on the more recent "Doo Wop Love Songs" special on PBS.

This is about as good a rendition of the original as you will ever hear. This is their best song and Siegel is on top of his game.

Jay Siegal hits the same notes from 1959 in the same key now as he did then. His falsetto is perfect.

@theroyalsofsd So few people realize or admit that Tonight was a far better song than Lion was. Thank you!

@BobbyDelRiv Tonight I Fell in Love was one of the few real, true doo wop songs that the Tokens ever released.
Howieshet 5 months ago
@Howieshet You have to be a true DooWop fan like we are in order to realize that. Also the great When I Go To Sleep At Night.
