@thehorsefly87 Hey! I wonder if you can train on gear shifting without having your motor running? I'm 15, and i'm not aloud to drive without my dad, but can i practice gearshifting without ruin the motor or something else? Thanks. Great video btw! :)
Im saving up money now to get myself a bike! Im a new rider so I already have a good friend of mine that has been riding for years thats gonna teach me how to ride but tbh, the clutch and changing gears part has me worried! lol! He has a cbr 600 so that has me even a bit more on edge! xD Any tips or words of wisdom that you might have would be great! LOL! Good video btw!
really nice video, thanks for taking the time to do this! it really helps guys like me who do not have that much experience before taking the licence!
some bikes have neutral betwen each ghear 1 N 2 N 3 N 4 N 5 but from neutral from 4 N 5 u cannot go to 1 ghear with one click u have to pass to each spead, down spead, betwen ghears is a neautral position,
Thanxx alot this video truly helped. I'm only 17 and my dream is to own my own bike I have driven mannual trucks before but never a motorcycle. This video helped me understand the shifting process thanxx :)
never rode a bike in my life, motorcycle to be specific lol,my partner now got his license,i was thinking of buying a 1000cc and let him teach me on it,he keeps advising me not to,i said let me get some advice from someone who has one, what u think?most likely u'd say i'm an idiot but i know myself,i know that i'll be able to do it.
When you hit a little hole in the road and your wrist gives a little throttle you'll think you're an idiot too because the bike won't be there anymore :P
@originalredman1212 From experience, DON'T get on an 1000cc bike unless you are highly experienced being on a 125cc manual control bike. The issue is that the throttle will be very sensitive and difficult to use, it would be like putting who has never driven a car before into a Ferrari. Even if you are confident, with a super high power bike like that, one small mistake and you are going 90 mph into a wall before you've even noticed you've made a mistake. Don't run until you can walk.
@Penn666 ur killing my mojo man lol,see i just don't want to buy one and have to go buy another soon after cuz i may get bored of it,partna of mine had a 125,scooter and within a week he got fedup of it.
@originalredman1212 Not a problem, you can get your partner to rent a 125cc manual bike on your behalf for next to nothing (of course not letting them know a non-licensed rider will be on it) and just practice for a week or 2 on very quiet roads.
Hey whats up fly. digg tha vid, just had a question dont kno if its stupid or not but im gettin my 1st bike and ima newbie so w.e lol, and i wanted to kno if the half click in N is for all street bikes im gettin a honda CBR10rr. thanks man. you're vids helped me out alot more then most ive seen on here
I don't understand the downshifting, i thought you had to release the clutch for every gear? Or the bike will kick you off, at least that's what I was told...someone clarify this for me!
Thats why I never have driven a bike. I can drive my 5 speed truck with a blindfold. If somebody pulls out in front of me I can drop in to neutral and hit the brakes in a milli-second.
can you stop in 6, then downshift to 1 while stopped at the light? If so, is this a good or bad technique, and do you need to let the clutch out with each gear, or just hold the clutch and downshift to1?
@chevlumina Yes that is completely possible. And no you don't have to release the clutch for every gear you can just hold it in and kick down 5 times really quick to get to first. This is generally not a good idea though, you want to shift down to match your speed. If you are braking and you should be in second gear but you are in sixth because you plan to downshift when you stop, what happens if the light you are coming to turns green?
@HerdoRalden You would have to try and get in the right gear which at that point will be confusing. If you just downshift to match the speed you never have to worry about what gear you are in, your bike will tell you when it's happy and when it's not. Shifting isn't something you can master by reading comments, or watching youtube videos. I know because I watched hundreds before I rode. They helped and it made things easier, but the only way to learn is to do it. Like swimming.
@chevlumina Im not sure for most bikes but on my dirtbike (enduro) you *can* BUT because the cams that the gears are on aren't moving it usualy will improperly shift down and stop at a gear. Best stopping method is downshifting while slowing down, start braking, shift down let out the clutch slowly and use the engine to help slow you down. not only do you stop with more ease its less wear on the brakes and if you need to accelerate your already in the right gear.
@chevlumina yes mate thats more than possible. however if your in 6 and you slowing down to lights you engine will start dying in a high gear at low revs so like the other guy said just shift it down. its all down to opinion and personal style. personally i just start braking early then coast (clutch in no revs) and shift down the gears so i dont have to do it when i stop :-)
Good advice... How do you prevent dropping your first bike and do you suggest buying a used 250cc bike before getting something brand new with a bigger engine
@drsnyp smaller bikes are lighter, easier to handle and more forgiving, ex you accidentally pop the clutch you aren't going to violently accelerate or accidentally wheelie. to prevent doping the bike, Don't sit sideways on the bike on the kickstand, its unstable (self taught) always have a firm grip while moving the bike and make sure it stays balanced, when stopping make sure your foot is going onto a even non slippery surface.
@drsnyp its your first bike, your going to crash it and drop it, it happens. Starting with something you don't mind getting beat up is a good idea. That way you can focus on learning how to ride versus focusing on not getting a scratch on it, and crashing it and not being able to afford to fix it (fairings can be easily a few hundred dollars) a NINJA 250 has more than enough power to learn on, from what Ive heard its probably the best 250, getting a older N250 would probably be your best bet
Great video. Very informative for beginners and someone that is interested on taking on this hobby. I recently took an msf course and got kicked out. I was told to take on a practice course that they have before I was able to continue. I dropped the bike. Can you make a video on how NOT to drop your bike. The bike was heavy for me. I try picking it up but I couldn't. I have only one more change to pass the course, before I have to pay another 250.
@YoWhatUpMike They do exist - It isn't as complicated as you think, its easier than driving a manual shift car (I dirttbike and drive a standard jetta TDI)
Oh my god this video is exactly what I needed. I'm going to be buying a bike this weekend (upgrading from a Honda Ruckus) and I was a little nervous about using a clutch. Great video man.
By the way I'm torn between a 2011 CBR 125 or a CRF230M. Which would you recommend?
I'm 17 and just got my licence. I wanna get a motorcycle but i'm not sure if i should. My mom says i shouldn't. Well, actually she forbids that i do. But i love bikes so much. I'm also kind of scared because i have a friend in my church who was in an accident, and he will never walk again. He's in an electric wheelchair 24/7. I also know several other people who have died or have been hurt in accidents. Anyone have any advice for me?
@crazypersonlol34 Yeah shit happens man. Get a bike if thats what you really want and can handle and be responsible. No point living half way, simple fact is we are al going to die evenutally so enjoy life.
@skeetdoner yep just pull in the clutch to disengage the engine and start braking or start braking and pull iin the clutch before the engine stalls or do a combination and down shift through the gears to improve stopping abilities. Its just like a manual transmission car ;p
The motorcycle's basic set up is just like a car (manual gear box) with pressing in the clutch, changing to the next gear, then slowly releasing the clutch while giving it some throttle. Of course, the mechanics are different with gear changes being in a linear action rather than like an "H" pattern and using hand controls vs feet.
Since motorcycle gear box is set up in a linear (or straight line) unlike a car, you can't just drop from any gear into neutral without passing through other gears.
i wish i could find a bike that was similar to a honda 4 wheeler, where theres no clutch, only gear shifter. nuetral, down into reverse. back up into nuetral. up up and away into 5th. then back down again
my point was that if you jump down straight to 1st gear, trouble is only a clutch release away. Ever had a bike fishtail on you? happened to me, wasn't paying attention and dropped down too many gear and almost went down.
@92HondaEX dangerous stuff to drop down too many gears, the engine will slow down the wheel spinning, and i think that would be like braking to the point of blocking the wheel :S
@joerock00 you tell by the REV's of the engine you want to shift before you get to redline and after the has reached its powerband (power-band is where the engine produces power well *basically*)
Ive ridin alot of dirt bikes, were I didn't have to worry about shifting, and I'm getting my bikes liscense, and I was going to buy a used Suzuki 250cc cruiser, is it any different with cruiser type bikes?
why is that when shifting up u dont have to clutch in? only when shifting down...i have a friend who dosent clutch in, only when he is shifting down...owns a suzuki 600cc dont know wich model.
@cesztoszule Clutchless up shifting. I think this technique is used on racing. You just have to shift on the right engine rev. You have to release the throttle when you shift though. That's what I heard about it. I never tried it myself.
In racing bikes have what they call a slipper clutch which means you can move through gears, with out there being a instant grab of gear. you will notice some riders racing will touch the clutch lightly as they enter corners to prolong the time, before the gear grabs in entering.
Thank you I'm planning on getting my permit tuesday and buying my bike that day and driving it home i know its crazy to have never rode before but I'll practice all day on the lot first before I even leave off of it then I'll drive in about 40 miles home we will see how it goes lol gone im still taking the msf class at the end of next month though just didn't want to wait that long to get my bike
@Mints2Krunk Decided to let them just deliver it stalled a few times and just wasn't comfortable at all lol but I'm practicing up and down the street getting my shifting and braking down
i have a question!! shifting on a motorcycle is the same as shifting on a car? now i come out fast on first. second third. and by the time im already on 70 mph. can i skip 4 and 5 and go straight to 6?
How do you know what gear your in, is there like a indicator on the dash? like for a standard car or truck, there's a pattern, (up one, down one, right one, up one, ETC) so just by glancing at it you know what gear your at.
@darielon1 yes but you may stall the engine simply because it takes ALOT of torque to move the bike at the higher gear ratio. not to mention you would also have to let the clutch out alot slower so its just more ware and tear.
@thehorsefly87 Why not? I thought you could just push down *click*click*half click*. You just won't be able to go straight from 4th to neutral with one *click* since it is a sequential gearbox. Sorry if I understood his question wrong.
@vegeta11974 you can't go from 4th to neutral without going through 3 2 N, you can't 4 N. Ya, of course you can hold the clutch the whole time from 4 through 3 through 2 then a half click to N... That's not what he asked.
@vegeta11974 agreed. motorcycles are cvt trannies in general (semi automatic). try shifting from 4 to N straight down in a semi auto car. impossible right? exactly the point. thats the downside toward motorcycle trannies sadly.
@SpLeNdidV8 , if you pull in the clutch you disengage the wheels from the motor, which does the exact same thing that neutral does. So in a car you could shift into neutral and break. On a bike you can pull in the clutch and break if you need to. The problem with breaking with the clutch pulled in in stead of downshifting is that you dont know what gear you need to be in if you want to take off again. you would have to come to a complete stop, shift down into first, then go again.
@SpLeNdidV8 its kind of..sequencial.. if i spelled it right.. so there is no way to get to neutral unless it is some kind of rotative transmission that can get you from 5th to neutral, or so i've heard. but that is not reliable i believe
@joseyfbaby I highly recommend taking a motorcycle safety course. I rode for about 30 years before I took one to get my license. There were 2 girls in my class that had never even driven a clutch before. After 2 days of class they could ride almost perfectly.
@cheyney96 If coming to a stop you use the break first, then apply the clutch when close to where you are stopping; you do not want to apply the clutch too early incase you need to accelerate. Always change gear before you get to a turn / before you stop, not when you are stopped or when turning. You only need to let the clutch out slowly in first, but it never just let it out in full; always let it out at a continuous speed.
hi...i'm new to motorbikes. i'm getting my L's soon so just wondering which bike would do best with best price and performance??? any suggestions plzzzz
@AkaLeeBeats Not usually, sometimes you can accidentely miss a gear while shifting but it's not technically neutral, and you might hear grinding. Only between first and second is neutral.
No, that is not the correct procedure for downshifting. At urban speeds smoothly apply the breaks until you are nearly at a stop then pull in the clutch and kick the bike down into 1st at the same time as coming to a stop. At higher speeds to use engine breaking ease off throttle, pull clutch, downshift, let out clutch, engine break then either repeat to continue braking with engine, or, if you are easing off smoothly for cornering speed and gear, tip in and ease on throttle
thanks alot man I'm about to buy an 03 R6 and I've never ridden a sportbike or anything for that matter but I drive a Nissan 300zx so I've got an idea for shifting, rev matching down shifting and clutch but I'm sure I'll have to get used to it.
I'm becoming a new rider soon (when I get my bike) I know how to get out of first the easy way. If you told a new rider this it would help them alot. It's like a stick shift car. You hold clutch in, put first, ease clutch out, and you feel it begin to shake (about to turn off) push clutch in a lil, and start giving it gas as you release clutch. With a bike you ease out of the clutch, and the bike actually starts to roll a lil, you give it gas as you release more, and there you go your in first.
One thing you should have mentioned is when its your first time on a bike, just start in first and slowly let the clutch out, the bike will gain friction in gears and start moving. One you feel that, tighten up the clutch and do it again. Its a very easy and effective way to learn.
The bike I am getting, the zx-6, you can actually get to 35 mph without touching the throttle.
Remember, first gear IS THEE HARDEST TO LEARN so don't fret about doing this.
@uze22 Yes. Every bike will be the same as long as it has gears.
I heard of a bike with backwards gears but that was because I was doing some serious researching. In today's standards, a lot of bikes you click down to shift down as standard.
a cool and fast way to change when ur riding at speed is to leave your clutch out and put your foot under the gears and lift it up it wont go in gear untill you shut your throttle off once you do it will pop into gear and will be alot smoother change
Wouldn't downshifting and pulling in the clutch for every gear wear out the clutch? Is there anything wrong with just breaking, pulling in the clutch and matching the gear to the speed you release the clutch? Apart from wearing out the brake pads, any other negatives? Kinda learnt everything myself, so didn't really know about this technique.
when stopping can i apply brakes and clutch(at almost a stand still) and then hold the front brake and downshift with my left foot? or is that too much for a bike to handle? cheers for the help videos by the way :)
Go check your local road law site, it differs from state to state. You should start off on a smaller bike, 125cc if your really apprehensice, 250 cc if you are relatively confident.
@motorcycleboii95 Well truthfully since your in a northern state and your young you should have a car because winters a bitch and you never know when your gonna need to carry a bunch of shit. If you have access to a car that you can use whenever then ya go for it.
hey i have 3 questions.. which brake do you prefer to use when down shifting????.
Also when you down shift sequentially, can you 1. brake 2. pull clutch 3. downshift 4. let clutch go. then repeat.... 1. brake 2. pull clutch. 3. downshift. 4. let clutch go. and continue till first gear??
and when coming from 5th gear to a stop can you go from 5 to 4 to 3 to 2 to 1 before going back up half a click to neutral or should i go straight from 2 to neutral?
Thank you very much, you should be an Motorcycle teacher hehe ;P 2 Month's and then I go get my licence looking forward to it. I think this make me feel better getting the first time on that bike. Hope it goes well! ;P
@dezniqqadez yeah, as long as you pull in the clutch before you stop, you can be at whatever gear, it's just if you don't downshift before, then you have to have the clutch in and downshift at the stop sign otherwise you won't have enough torque in a higher gear from a stationary position, so it's more convinient to downshift before stopping.
Are bikes similar to cars where you can just disengage the clutch and brake all the way to a stop? or is it more like a bicycle where you have to go down each gear for it to transfer correctly? I know that the brakes would wear faster, but i live in an area where there is a lot of traffic, i dont want to be shitting around with gears so much that it could distract me.
@HeraldOfHypo Like a car. But unlike a car where you can move to first in one motion, on a bike you have to kick it down multiple times to 1st then up to neutral.
im afraid of going for neutral and hitting first gear......im getting my 1st bike friday the 13th....its a used 96 zx900r....the odds are against me.. its a big bike and iv only rode a dirt bike in the snow on a flat tire for 5 min when i was 17...i may get hurt...nobody wants me to get it....but f*ckem im doing it anyway.

@skeetdoner yep just pull in the clutch to disengage the engine and start braking or start braking and pull iin the clutch before the engine stalls or do a combination and down shift through the gears to improve stopping abilities. Its just like a manual transmission car ;p

Hi im 15 and i wanna get ahead and clear something up quickly. Is it the same with a manual moped?
ReMaDiZeL99 9 months ago
The motorcycle's basic set up is just like a car (manual gear box) with pressing in the clutch, changing to the next gear, then slowly releasing the clutch while giving it some throttle. Of course, the mechanics are different with gear changes being in a linear action rather than like an "H" pattern and using hand controls vs feet.
Since motorcycle gear box is set up in a linear (or straight line) unlike a car, you can't just drop from any gear into neutral without passing through other gears.

i wish i could find a bike that was similar to a honda 4 wheeler, where theres no clutch, only gear shifter. nuetral, down into reverse. back up into nuetral. up up and away into 5th. then back down again

zipper978 9 months ago 16
my point was that if you jump down straight to 1st gear, trouble is only a clutch release away. Ever had a bike fishtail on you? happened to me, wasn't paying attention and dropped down too many gear and almost went down.
92HondaEX 9 months ago
@92HondaEX dangerous stuff to drop down too many gears, the engine will slow down the wheel spinning, and i think that would be like braking to the point of blocking the wheel :S

when do u know when to shift thx and must u hold the clutch in order tho shift up or down?
joerock00 10 months ago
@joerock00
U usually do it by feeling or sound of engine. I always use clutch when shifting up or down. Some ppl don't use clutch when shifting gears up.
perovic8 9 months ago
@joerock00 you tell by the REV's of the engine you want to shift before you get to redline and after the has reached its powerband (power-band is where the engine produces power well *basically*)

Ive ridin alot of dirt bikes, were I didn't have to worry about shifting, and I'm getting my bikes liscense, and I was going to buy a used Suzuki 250cc cruiser, is it any different with cruiser type bikes?
gunmasa3000 10 months ago
why is that when shifting up u dont have to clutch in? only when shifting down...i have a friend who dosent clutch in, only when he is shifting down...owns a suzuki 600cc dont know wich model.
cesztoszule 10 months ago
@cesztoszule Clutchless up shifting. I think this technique is used on racing. You just have to shift on the right engine rev. You have to release the throttle when you shift though. That's what I heard about it. I never tried it myself.
extend 9 months ago
In racing bikes have what they call a slipper clutch which means you can move through gears, with out there being a instant grab of gear. you will notice some riders racing will touch the clutch lightly as they enter corners to prolong the time, before the gear grabs in entering.

How do you know what gear your in, is there like a indicator on the dash? like for a standard car or truck, there's a pattern, (up one, down one, right one, up one, ETC) so just by glancing at it you know what gear your at.
mcbad12 11 months ago
@mcbad12 unfortunately no but in my year of riding i havn't forgotten you can kinda tell from your speed.
pattern is one down 5 (or 6) up

gagnar 11 months ago
i have gotten alot from ur video but i hve a question for u and that question is can u upshift gears without using the clutch.
R6Timi 11 months ago
can u go from fisrt to third?
darielon1 11 months ago
@darielon1 yes but you may stall the engine simply because it takes ALOT of torque to move the bike at the higher gear ratio. not to mention you would also have to let the clutch out alot slower so its just more ware and tear.
ecookman 7 months ago
good video, how about if you are in 4th gear for example, can you shift to neutral instead of downshifting to 3rd, 2nd, 1st ?
SpLeNdidV8 1 year ago
@SpLeNdidV8 haha... uh no.
thehorsefly87 1 year ago 17
@thehorsefly87 Why not? I thought you could just push down *click*click*half click*. You just won't be able to go straight from 4th to neutral with one *click* since it is a sequential gearbox. Sorry if I understood his question wrong.
iamxyj 11 months ago
@thehorsefly87 are u a drummer?
Specialized1993 11 months ago
@thehorsefly87 why can't you do that? you should be able to hold in clutch and go down thru gears to neutral...? for w/e the reason why.
vegeta11974 9 months ago
@vegeta11974 you can't go from 4th to neutral without going through 3 2 N, you can't 4 N. Ya, of course you can hold the clutch the whole time from 4 through 3 through 2 then a half click to N... That's not what he asked.
thehorsefly87 9 months ago
@vegeta11974 agreed. motorcycles are cvt trannies in general (semi automatic). try shifting from 4 to N straight down in a semi auto car. impossible right? exactly the point. thats the downside toward motorcycle trannies sadly.
frankie440mopar 5 months ago
@SpLeNdidV8 , if you pull in the clutch you disengage the wheels from the motor, which does the exact same thing that neutral does. So in a car you could shift into neutral and break. On a bike you can pull in the clutch and break if you need to. The problem with breaking with the clutch pulled in in stead of downshifting is that you dont know what gear you need to be in if you want to take off again. you would have to come to a complete stop, shift down into first, then go again.

@92HondaEX um i think i'll let you do that..
SpLeNdidV8 9 months ago
@SpLeNdidV8 its kind of..sequencial.. if i spelled it right.. so there is no way to get to neutral unless it is some kind of rotative transmission that can get you from 5th to neutral, or so i've heard. but that is not reliable i believe

@joseyfbaby I highly recommend taking a motorcycle safety course. I rode for about 30 years before I took one to get my license. There were 2 girls in my class that had never even driven a clutch before. After 2 days of class they could ride almost perfectly.

when you down shift when do u apply brakes?? and do u always have to let off the clutch slowly?
cheyney96 1 year ago
@cheyney96 If coming to a stop you use the break first, then apply the clutch when close to where you are stopping; you do not want to apply the clutch too early incase you need to accelerate. Always change gear before you get to a turn / before you stop, not when you are stopped or when turning. You only need to let the clutch out slowly in first, but it never just let it out in full; always let it out at a continuous speed.

Can u shift to neutral from any gear? In 6th can u half click it into neutral?
AkaLeeBeats 1 year ago
@AkaLeeBeats Not usually, sometimes you can accidentely miss a gear while shifting but it's not technically neutral, and you might hear grinding. Only between first and second is neutral.

AirsoftMarksMan1994 1 year ago
@AirsoftMarksMan1994 You don't put it into neutral unless your turning off the bike,at stops signs etc you go down to first gear and hold in clutch
A7xRc 1 year ago
No, that is not the correct procedure for downshifting. At urban speeds smoothly apply the breaks until you are nearly at a stop then pull in the clutch and kick the bike down into 1st at the same time as coming to a stop. At higher speeds to use engine breaking ease off throttle, pull clutch, downshift, let out clutch, engine break then either repeat to continue braking with engine, or, if you are easing off smoothly for cornering speed and gear, tip in and ease on throttle

ChaoticXCarnage 1 year ago
I'm becoming a new rider soon (when I get my bike) I know how to get out of first the easy way. If you told a new rider this it would help them alot. It's like a stick shift car. You hold clutch in, put first, ease clutch out, and you feel it begin to shake (about to turn off) push clutch in a lil, and start giving it gas as you release clutch. With a bike you ease out of the clutch, and the bike actually starts to roll a lil, you give it gas as you release more, and there you go your in first.

Could you slow down all the way from 5th or 6th gear and downshift to gear 1 when your completely stopped?
ThePianoDream 1 year ago
is this the right procedure for downshifting.
1.ease of throttle tap on brake
2.hold in clutch and downshift to 2
3.let out the clutch.
4.go into neutral
5.do the upshifting process

One thing you should have mentioned is when its your first time on a bike, just start in first and slowly let the clutch out, the bike will gain friction in gears and start moving. One you feel that, tighten up the clutch and do it again. Its a very easy and effective way to learn.
The bike I am getting, the zx-6, you can actually get to 35 mph without touching the throttle.
Remember, first gear IS THEE HARDEST TO LEARN so don't fret about doing this.
NinjaOnANinja 1 year ago
is it with every bike that to get in first you shift down?
uze22 1 year ago

Kinda learnt everything myself, so didn't really know about this technique.

hey i have 3 questions.. which brake do you prefer to use when down shifting????.
Also when you down shift sequentially, can you 1. brake 2. pull clutch 3. downshift 4. let clutch go. then repeat.... 1. brake 2. pull clutch. 3. downshift. 4. let clutch go. and continue till first gear??
and when coming from 5th gear to a stop can you go from 5 to 4 to 3 to 2 to 1 before going back up half a click to neutral or should i go straight from 2 to neutral?

dezniqqadez 1 year ago
Comment removed
MCoftheD 1 year ago
@dezniqqadez yeah, as long as you pull in the clutch before you stop, you can be at whatever gear, it's just if you don't downshift before, then you have to have the clutch in and downshift at the stop sign otherwise you won't have enough torque in a higher gear from a stationary position, so it's more convinient to downshift before stopping.
ti3nt 1 year ago
Are bikes similar to cars where you can just disengage the clutch and brake all the way to a stop? or is it more like a bicycle where you have to go down each gear for it to transfer correctly? I know that the brakes would wear faster, but i live in an area where there is a lot of traffic, i dont want to be shitting around with gears so much that it could distract me.
HeraldOfHypo 1 year ago
@HeraldOfHypo Like a car. But unlike a car where you can move to first in one motion, on a bike you have to kick it down multiple times to 1st then up to neutral.
