  • This really should be under "Disney Death" and "Tear Jerker" in TV Tropes. Like if your eyes are red from crying at the funeral scene of this cartoon!

  • the moral of the story is don't shoot at birds except turkeys

  • You know, Audrey's an amazing shot with that pellet gun. They're not known for accuracy.

  • @LadyDeirdre thank you for comments.

  • Dang! Cartoons back in the day were kinda dark!

  • Im 20 years old, and I grew up on these cartoons. The cartoons these days COULD NEVER COMPARE TO THE OLD DAYS!!! :) BEST CARTOONS EVER CREATED! Take Me Back In Time

  • @MzDulceBaby thank you for the comments.

  • ok i just cried its been @ least 15yrs since i saw this

  • @prettyvoyce91 I am sorry if you cried but look at the ending bird was alive right. Thank you for comments.

  • I remember seeing this as a kid, long time ago. It was a real weeper for me. It still is.

  • @poughkeepsiejohn1 I am sorry if this cartoon make you cry, but it is good one right we should not harm anyone. Thank you for comments.

  • It's Alive, IT'S ALIVE!!!

  • @anniest2010 yes it is alive isn't it great. We must not hurt anybody.Thank you for comments.

  • little bad azz kids today you know this is an old cartoon todays the opasite

  • @videobrazil1000 thank you for comments.

  • So, the bird died and then it was brought back to life?

Or was the bird in a coma? Like it was still alive but the other birds thought the baby bird was dead and it came out of it since I see that bump on the head?

Cause I remember the original, the baby bird got brought back to life by the Lord.

  • @job489 bird brought back to life yeh. Thanks for comments.

  • @nihon94b

No prob. This was one of the major cartoons to influence my life.

  • @job489 its best not to be too analytical about cartoons

  • @utsavman47

You have a very strong point.

  • The one dislike is from the NRA who hates this.

  • This was so depressing to watch! I don't know how I watched this so much as a kid!

  • Audrey the Murderer!!!! RUN AWAY BEFORE SHE SHOOTS US TOO!!!!!

  • god i remember this

  • WTF was this episode based on another cartoon in the woody woodpecker franchise? Because I remember having a VHS tape as a kid where it had 3 cartoon shorts on it, one was about a boy who goes out with his BB gun and shoots and bird and feels guilty, it might have been in black and white but I really don't remember.

Same exact storyline, even the song is the same.

  • @Shamus8b8

Look at the one called "Song of the Birds-Moonbeams"..same story, with a boy..

  • Thanks for posting this, really brings back memories...and tears :)

  • I like the part at the end in which all though all of the birds distained Little Audrey for her actions, the one she had hurt gave it's friendship to her and redeemed her among its own.

  • the "good ole days" when even your black housemaid spanked the kid to teach them a lesson. as far as the portrayal of "Mammy" thats how it was back then. now Libs are fighting to actually change the words in Mark Twains "HUCK FINN"

  • i remember these cartoons... I can distinctly recall that most of my beliefs were formed watching these gems, learning what was wrong and right all to the tune of a catchy little song that was easy enough for a child to remember. Its a far cry from the "cartoons" kids these days watch, not by choice, but because all that is available is empty fluff designed to sell toys and not interested in using the ability to capture a childs imagination to place meaningful and useful thoughts in thier head

  • my names audrey :))

  • Philidelphiaeagles07 , I hope you don't aim someone's head? thank you for comments.

  • This use to make me cry even as a child! I could NEVER watch the part where the little bird died. So sad!

  • COTCgirl , thank you for comments. You are right that part is saddest. But end is good right?

  • @nihon94b Absolutely! The ending is so sweet. Thanks for posting this. :) Brings back so many memories.

  • Turloughf , yes that is the message in this cartoon, do not do such things. Thank you for comments.

  • You're welcome."Show respect to nature and its animals." That's my message

  • Turloughf , it is very good message

"Show respect to nature and its animals."

    Thank you for sharing.

  • @nihon94b That's one message. Another (I may mean "the other") is "Don't play with guns."

  • KBAFourthtime , you are right, thank you for comments.

  • Was it censored before? What for? Oh...don't tell me it was because of the mammy? My mother and enjoyed her so much!

  • Meowkie , I think it was censored later. thank you for comments.

  • @nihon94b Do you have any idea what was censored?

  • Meowkie , I am not sure it seems you have already talked about in your comments earlier. You should also search for The Song of the Birds (1935) and see the difference.

  • wow... I haven't seen this in a while... 20 ish years or so... still get teary eyed. :(

  • Creedluv04 , thank you for comments.

  • Some Edited Version Remove The Black Sterotypes!

  • Proof cartoons don't have to be funny all the time.:(

  • @Tsubahi What's a proof cartoon?

  • Hehehe, If it was NTA found in 1935, then how???

  • @jpongsin2002 thank you

  • i cried when i first saw this and when the bunny grapped her baby and started kissing him i do that to my little dog when i see a dog abuse commercial

  • Tanshortbrunettegirl, thank you for comments.

  • @tanshortbrunettegirl Bunny? It was a bird.

  • Youlldietrying , thank you for nice comments.

  • sooo sad.... i just wanna cry..... sooo sad so very sad

  • ChristineScholz , yes sad but nice ending right? thank you for comments.

  • There was a variation of this cartoon made by the same animators, I believe. It had almost exactly the same plot and actions in this, right down to the carrying the supposedly dead bird on the leaf and the bird taking the bird seed from the "killer's" mouth.

  • I LOVED this when I was little. Tarts and Flowers and Song of the Birds are my favorite.

  • ZombiexMuffins, thank you for comments.

  • This is a remake, 'Urban', of Max Fleischer's 'Color Classic', "Song of the Birds" (1935), with Audrey taking the unnamed little boy's part. It was a habit of Paramount/Famous Studios, in later years, to remake several of the earlier Fleischer stories (especially the Popeye cartoons!).

  • @fromthesidelines

the fleischer studios always used to make remakes of certian cartoons

take betty boop for example she does Barnacle bill & Betty Boop for president then soon after they make a remake with the popeye series

  • which one came out first because theres another cartoon just like this but its a boy. did they mean to do the exact same thing.

  • hmmm, all i get from this is you better be careful with the Power your given....you could hurt someone......

  • Mannagood, good comments.

  • Stereo types aside. This little Audrey toon is is above many others with I have seen, with the INT trademark. Peta might use it. Many cartoons could be used by peta

  • omg I think I need a prozac after seeing this one...

  • Chris188228, thank you for comments. Plesse do not buy Prozac download version buy from Pharmacists.(joking)

  • haha so did i i used to own this one too.

  • Does anyone remember one very similar to this one, but it was in black and white and the lead was a little boy?

  • IdyIkr, thank you for comments. I hope someone might help you.

  • this is traumatic.. i forgot all about this one.. thanks.

  • 198126nana, you are welcome.

  • is that audrey`s mother? 1:00

  • F7wxqw, I think a maid. Thank you for comments.

  • I spent AGES trying to find this cuz I remember how sad it made me about 12 years ago, so thanks for the upload. I thought I could just watch it again and leave it at that but I ended up feeling sad at the funeral as always :( on the plus side I lol always at the maid bloodstain part :)

  • Blader2600 thank you for sharing comments. Actually this version is a part of my collection which is not available easily. Later some parts are deleted from this cartoon but I like this one.

  • Yh, I used to have them all on VHS but I can't remember what happened to them. I remember something about a cloud blowing and some fish smoking on another-I don't really remember much.

  • You WOULD laugh out loud at something like that, wouldn't you, Blader?

    > Professor DLC

  • I dont understand what you mean by that, please elaborate.

  • Well, you know --

Funny-talking, "sassified", dark-skinned mammy-type under the impression that she's bleeding to death from her head, where she just happened to nearly get shot at by a precocious, impetuous young little white girl with a BB gun.

    You know... something like THAT.

    > Professor DLC

  • lol, never bothered to think about it like that, but i suppose you're right.

  • what are you talkin about u make no sence

  • I still like it. Thanks

  • I used to cry at the part where the family of birds was giving a funeral service to the baby bird because it was sad

  • Ladyl31786, yes that par t is sad. Thank you for comments.

  • Is this a remake? I swear there's a different version with a little boy and minus the racist maid character, but there are identical shots like the birds carrying the other bird.

  • yes it a remake. The original is of Dave Fleischer.

  • I used to love this cartoon!!!! Thanks for posting it!

  • Kharsa12, thank you for comments.

  • I bawled my eyes out when I watched this for the first time as a kid. Even years later I cried just as much as before. I haven't thought about it for a while, and it may not be my favorite, but I will admit its message is strong.

  • PTSmash, thank you for comments.

  • Oh-no this is terrible guys!

  • "I killed him!"

  • oh my gosh i was so disturbed by this when i was a kid....i'll never forget how upset i used to be, but my mom tells me i used to just watch the it over and over... haha

  • Madhoshi7, thank you for comments.

  • I think the moral of the story would have been better if they showed the little brat burning in Hell in the end.

  • They should show this in school.

  • .lifeisbeautiful4me, Yes they should. More people watch this and leave comments like you more appealing your message will become. Ask your friends to watch this and leave comments. Thank you for comments.

  • i agree. It will remind the students not to harm the animals, including the baby animals.

  • @turloughf Ha ha. You and your students can enjoy your vegetarian Thanksgiving next month. Don't forget to say "Grace" before carving up your granola and bean curd.

  • i never heard of these cartoons before, this one was sad, but it got better :). i liked it.

  • Greendragons87, they never show you originals. Thank you for comments.

  • i loved this cartoon!! the funeral for the bird made me cry so hard, but when he came back to life i was soooo happy!!!!

  • Fallenangel1508, thank you for comments.

  • no problem sweetie! :)

  • yes this one always brung tears to my eyes but i cracked up at the babysitter in the beginning when she thought she was shot.how she gon flap up and fall down and turn pail................LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh yeah i hade this tape when i was in elementary school but now im 26.

  • ladycj25 thank you for sharing nice comments.

  • Loved the cartoons with a messaage - that all actions no matter how thoughtless have a consequence. Thought Audrey learned a good lesson that day. Great cartoon and one that I remember after 50 years. Still love birds!

  • CarolGiordano, thank you for comments.

  • Who needs the resident evil games to portray violence when you can have 1930's cartoons eh?

This always made me cry as a kid.

  • so sad =(

  • Kseadam8907, yes it is very sad but the ending is fine. Thank you

  • nihon94b - wasn't there a cartoon just like this, but with a boy instead of Little Audrey?

  • Kseadam8907, I am unable to recall what you have said about similar cartoon, if I know I will let you know or may be some one reply here. Thank for comments.

  • this cartoon always makes me cry

I remember watching it on vhs on 100 greatest cartoons, but of course the tape came out and I never saw it again until now

  • Mehhamha160, thank you for comments.

  • i cry watching this episode a very long time ago!! i cried even more when my mom threw the vhs tapes away =(

  • Oh, I am sorry to know that, thanks for comments.

  • Definite tear jerker:.o(...Just purchase another:o)...My all time favorite was the Red Balloon, equally as maudlin.

  • Always, always had to cry when I watched this.

  • CVG305, thank you for comments.

  • 1:28 The Mammy spanks Audrey for shooting a tomato on her head, making it look like blood.

  • Or do I mean 1:27 there?

  • omg i remember this movie! I would cry everytime i watched it! reading the post I see i wasn't the only one. =)

  • Skypurple15, thank you for comments.

  • what a brat she was..

  • wow i was only born in the late 80s but i used to always watch this on vhs and couldnt remember for soooo long what it was called.. thank god for google and youtube lol

  • Mizzkyuutie, thanks for comments.

  • oh yeah and I have another version of this cartoon as well on another tape which isnt faulty. The second version I have is a boy not Little Audrey.

  • I actually remember the main character being a boy. What is it called?

  • Fleischer's "The Song of the Birds" (1935) featured on "The Fabulous Fleischer Folio".

  • I had this on a VHS tape but the tape was faulty. Half way through this cartoon the video started to get static. So static that it was unwatchable but had sound. I now know how it ends. Thank you. Very sad cartoon though.

  • Thank you too for watching and comments.

  • i have some on VHS i got from a thrift store

  • this used to make me so sad when I was little :,(

  • Good to know the baby bird didn't die; he just tricked Audrey into thinking that he died. Audrey ought to know better than to mess with guns. This one should have never been aired; I like the one where she has the encounter with the Rainmaker; that's my all time favorite.

  • ahh! I bawled my eyes out watching this as a kid!

  • OMG! I love Little Audrey when I was little. I was delighted to find this cartoon, but after seeing it again after all these years... I was horrified over the racism and her shooting a bird and her being so happy about it in the beginning. Just goes to show you how much children's entertainment has changed . At least it showed she had remorse and compassion in the end and it was a happy ending, but in the beginning, I was like.... huh? this is terrrible!

  • I love this episode but whenever I watch it it makes me cry. So sad.

  • and, on another note, if any of you have the "Giant 600 Collection" DVD of cartoons, you should be very angry because they ruined this episode by cutting out the beginning part where Audrey shoots the tomato on her Grandma's head, and later gets spanked for it!

Thank God for YouTube! I had this on video when I was a kid and this is how I remember it! Thank you so much for posting this video!

  • Thank you for comments. I got more originals like this one.

  • such a sad cartoon but with a great message

  • Yes. Audrey had to learn the hard way, the consequences of the violence involved in using a gun. I remember watching this one when I was around 7 and I bawled my eyes out when I thought the little baby bird had died. And the birds funeral song was so sad! I just lost it!

My favorite Audrey cartoon of them all!

  • Yes, the birds funeral was sad part for me too. Thanks for comments.

  • Yeh there is a great message for kids.

  • this was really sad for me. that was when i was about 4 or 6.

  • I remember crying to this when I was like 4 years old...My gosh, I can't believe this is on here!

  • aww i love this, but it's soo sad.

  • Great Video!!!

  • I sympathize with you, 'ms'; that's probably why Audrey never appeared in such a "gut-wrenching" story like this one again...as in 1948's "There's Good Boos Tonight" [where "Ferdie the Fox" dies towards the end, and Casper briefly mourns him], Paramount/Famous Studios decided to stick with "lighter" stories after that...

  • It was fascinating to see a cartoon made before political correctness entered the general culture.

  • Man, Who can be so insane to give Audrey a gun?

  • Hi.

Where can I get a copy of this? I used to have it on a cheap videotape called "Dick Whittington's Cat". It had the opening/closing title cards cut off.

  • You can download from youtube. Thank you

  • hi

you can downloaded from yutube by using a IDM internet download manager and you can find that softwere on the web

  • Little Sarah Palin's new ad no doubt... :P

  • Thank you.

  • This one made me cry when I was little and it gave me the weirdest dreams

  • I am sorry if it hurts you.

  • How is this a nice cartoon?!

Half the time we think the bird is dead!! O_o

    i don't like this.

  • Audrey's laugh {obviously not used at the end here} was a cliche of sorts- in the '30s, there was a fad of "Little Audrey" jokes (no relation to Paramount's character), usually ending with the line, "and she just laughed and laughed". When Famous Studios created their "Audrey", they decided her laugh would be the tag in almost every one of her stories....

  • Famous Studios usually remade most of Max Fleischer's stories in the '40s and '50s (especiallly in the "Popeye" series), and this was no exception. Originally released in November 1949, and co-animated by Steve Muffati, who also drew the Little Audrey comic book stories for Harvey Publications [who later acquired the rights to her and the other Paramount characters] and the short-lived 1951 King Features daily comic strip...

  • lol aunt jamaima

  • this is kinda racist

  • Audrey always gets more than she bargains for.

  • Nice stereotypes in this...
