Does anybody know what "tune" is played in the middle of the instrumental part? It sounds like a British theme of some sort. Excuse my ignorance and have pity on me. :)
@makerofjam Thanks, you're right about the strings part, but I meant the short part from 2:21 - 2:36. Do you know what that is from? Sorry, I should have put the time in my previous post.
@MrShane82 NO is notoriously vague about song meaning. words rhyme and sometimes that's all it is. Occasionally there's meaning but more often than not, there's simply rhyme. The point is to feel the feeling and hear the melody and develop your own idea. let the music take you, like a soundtrack to your thoughts.
From the lyrics it sounds like its about a kid dying from some sort of abuse from someone he trusted like a parent , relitive , or friend. I love this song though even if the lyrics area a bit depressing.
This is probably my favorite New Order song of all time. It reminds me of my high school years. I think I really identified with lines "So don't tell me about politics
Or all the problems of our economics
When you can't look after what you can't own"
Basically it was then that I became became disillusioned with the false promises of American secular culture. Thank God I became a Christian because politics still can't address the root cause of something so profoundly wrong as child abuse.
I was DJ'ing a gig here in LA back in the early 90's. Some guy came up to me and asked if I had this song since I was playing a ton of New Order that night. I told him I didn't. He walked away dissatisfied and bummed. Then I reached into my crate and pulled this puppy out! The floor filled immediately. One of New Order's finest!
2.37 always makes me smile. Gorgeous.

The multiple synth parts in here were as great as any classical tune. Just majestic, quite an accomplishment.

As legendary as they were as Joy Division, I feel when this album came out they became pure New Order. Does that make sense?

@hawaiidispenser if you mean the string part I think its Wagner's Rheingold prelude

@hawaiidispenser sounds like a variation on the same tune to me
makerofjam 6 months ago
@hawaiidispenser it's New Order, it's not from anything i.e. it's their own thing, programmed - probably by Steve or Barney, not a sample.

The instrumental part is identical in some ways on "Bring Home The Dancing Horses" by the Echo and the Bunnymen

Rheingold Prelude was used in the movie Nosferatu from 1979, which Ian C and Bernard liked.

Very "Wagnerian". New Order often accused, along with Joy Division, of fascist sympathies. Quite wrong as it turned out.
A class song from a class album by a class act.

@nickloyal
They have taken from Das Rheingold prelude. But both are great artists and they have put Wagner to good use
