The Amiga successor truly blew the VIC 20 out of the water. But it was a nice enough system for it's time. I can't believe William Shattner was actually sober in this video! I was waiting for Leonard Nimoy to come on and say "Program long, and prosper" :)
oh yeah-had a VIC-it meant Voice Integrated Computer or something like that, you could program it to say words, it came with a manual with pages of code-you'd type code for an hour to hear it tweet like a bird or say "stop", I had the cassette player ad on to run some programs and I had the modem to get "online" and go on Compuserve, there was nothing, on online dictionary, some chat-that was about it-no porn yet
Maybe, but it takes more than a celebrity endorsement to sell something.
It also takes good decisions from a competent management.
Once Jack Tramiel was out of Commodore and no one worthy of the job ended up filling his shoes, that was it.
Commodore shared the same fate that RCA got and that even Apple itself almost got until Steve Jobs came back: a company that, despite their core competences, failed because their leadership were so into themselves and completely out of touch with reality.
Of course, Commodore succeeded back then because Jack Tramiel was Commodore; he cared a lot about his own company and made decisions that were best for his company.
I paid £199 for my Vic 20 back in 1983. It was at least a year before I could afford to buy the datasette to save my programs let alone load commercially available software. Great keyboards and standard Atari joystick ports.
Vic Mignogna should see this ad if he hasn't already ;)

Plimpton looks a lot like William Shatner in this.

0,973 MHz Baby! Pretty good Machine for the time but of course the successor C64 was much better.

It's cool because it brings the porn right up onto your TV screen.

Friend of mine got one of these for Xmas 1982. Seemed cutting edge at the time but within a year the C64 made it look very sad.

David Sarnoff was RCA. Steve Jobs is Apple.

taking inflation into account that would be like $700 today. Same as computers now pretty much. Are these collectibles now?
mattihoo 3 years ago
Within a year the price dropped to $89 at most stores. The Commodore 64 was the first computer with 64k memory to break the $200 barrier.

depends how you determine inflation, by using the housing market for comparison this is equal to about 1500 plus.
