Shawn, I've become fixated with your channel lol! It's the best on Youtube for golf instruction bar none! I'm wondering if I don't have the brace, or weight on my left side, as my divots (if I take one) are never in front of the ball. I'm sure I'm losing a some forward tilt through impact as well. Any thoughts sir?

Hi Shawn I'm just revisiting this concept as I'm prob not setting up correctly for it. It looks to me that your left leg is pre-set to the impact position. I was wondering therefore is there a perceptible increase in weight going through the left foot at address say 60:40 rather than 50:50 as conventional texts will say?
@parttroll1 Yes; a great weight distribution in DYNAMIC ADDRESS is 60-40 in favor of the left or forward side; feeling that we are already in motion in our follow through and in the process of allowing our arm-club units to swing into the backswing while letting our bodies listen to this and gliding out of the way; Shawn
a) is it fair to label this "modified stack/tilt?" And there seems to be a trend on tour (with short irons at least) to really brace against left, stay left, and stay centered. Bye, bye traditional loading?
@steckleinjr Stack and tilt came out after I was already out there on air and when their name came out, I thought they were on to the things I was teaching; but the only thing we have in common is this; and we don't even do that the same way; I talk brace AGAINST THE LEFT and keep the body's centre of gravity stacked with proper tilt through the swing; see my home page and work your way back through the videos...Thanks for posting! Shawn
@clemshaw I actually stumbled upon Shawn's vids a year and half ago searching for Bennett/Plummer's Stack & Tilt on youtube.. thank God! Shawn, I was hesitant to switch to braced-tilt, but now it's making a huge difference in consistent ball compression, preventing sliding, etc. I even posted on your forum that I've followed and taught too many people, incorrectly, a lateral weight shift.. hehe. Youtube vids & DVDs are truly second to none on the full swing.. THANKS SHAWN!!
Hi Shawn, I just want to start off by saying I am so happy that I found your videos here. I am new to the sport, just a few years, and since watching everything has improved! I have a question about the brace against the left. I started using it at the range this weekend and I am a lot more consistent striking the ball. Is this something I use all the time or is this just for practice? Bought ur new DVDs, awesome. Thanks!
@451mnu Yes; too much tilt at address will be felt as being out of balance and your body will need to compensate for this; start with just enough and maintain it through the whole motion by gliding around it; Great comment! Shawn
this set-up looks alot like Gary Edwins concept (RSS) Right side Swing. Would you say this is similar? I am a RSS player and the things that I've been taught are very similar in concept at least to you style. This idea or concept of being braced against the forward side Really Works!!! I've never played better! I've used your videos and excersises in conjunction with the RSS method and my game has literally changed over night!....You're a great teacher!
@curtissii Similar but with way more range of motion to truly kill the ball effortlessly! The body is designed a very specific way and teachers have to do their homework in the skeletal structure; see "golf pro lesson body turn arm swing" and "golf pro lesson stop crashing" videos; Shawn
Thanks for the lessons Shawn, loving my iron play now. Do we still stack as much into the left with the driver? Reason for askng is, off the tee hasn't seen the same scale improvement as my irons.Distance yes, but its straight left . I can aim about 22 degrees right to fix this. Dont want to get into what looks and feels like a bad habbit
@67thatwastheyear There are many new videos that have been loaded since this one to help out with elaborating; see "golf pro lesson feel and let the hammer through" and "golf pro lesson tilted twirl"; just go to my home channel and work your way back; the last 7 months have been a real revelation!! Shawn
the uphill downhill video was awesome, plus having an injury i found your injury video helpful. i must say my favorites are tilted spiral pt2 and hogan power drill against the mirror. after doing it i actually had less back pain!!! thnaks shawn!!
if you are braced against the left, does your weight just bounce off your right side?
you have a video that shows this from uneven lies, can you tell me where i can find it? also i havent plyed in 2 years becasue of a bad back. my first game this year, i used as many as your principles as i could, and was suprised at how well i struck the ball. thanks for all these videos! your methods really work!!
Could be wrong but for me, learning to initiate the swing with the hips and THEN the arms has produced FAR greater accuracy/distance. Weight transfer is critical to my game. Anybody have any thoughts on that?
So much of this video rang a bell with me especially when driving!! Every time I would tee off I would hit the ball well but it would slice off to the right and I would stagger backwards unable to finish the swing fully. Now I can see that I am swaying onto the right leg and leaving my weight there thru the swing just as you demonstrated. This just makes so much sense now! Awesome Sean, thanks.
SHAWN,,2 questions,, after tilting forward and then you brace your left side,,,does it feel as if your lead shoulder is slightly tilted upward??? Question 2,, in the braced address,, when you turn (backswing) do the hips & shoulders rotate at the same time ????,,,thank you
I love the videosand have learned much so far! I'm just picking up the game and have had a couple lessons. Grip is good, I'm clearing the hips and follow through is good (according to instructor.) However, I find myself swaying on my backswing and swing, moving the bottom of my swing arc. This kills my striking and I can't make consistent contact. Any drills to help me twist my hips and break the swaying habit?
These will get you started on the right track; for something even more complete and in priority sequence from scratch, you should get my DVD series; disc 3 also has all shots executed on the golf course from driver to putter;
You explain this theory very clearly & succinctly. I havent braced my left side since starting 10 years ago! (im 23) It makes so much sense to do when explained properly. Since employing this, i've increased my consistency and distance. I have improved the feel of my shots greatly. Ive stopped locking my right knee, lifting my body during the follow through and tilting back which made me slice a lot and hit them thin. A permanent change!
Looks like yes and no. He's stacked on his left leg all right, but he doesn't tilt his shoulders and spine on the backswing. As a result, his spine is still slightly angled right instead of straight up-and-down like a true S&T backswing.
This is NOT stack and tilt; it is Stacked and Tilted in relation to true anatomy and physics; they use the words Stack and Tilt for very different reasons; with S&T you will have difficulties with uphill, downhill and sidehill lies; you will not be able to do the one leg drill nor the feet together drills...too many holes in their stuff for my linking; Thanks for the comment though! Shawn
I am a flipper! I just can figure out how to change this. It appears that my hip turn is late on the down swing. I just don't quite understand how to adjust this???
Hey Jack; see the "golf pro lesson timing and tempo update" video as well as the "golf Pro lesson how to clear the hips", "golf pro lesson feet together drill" and "Golf Pro lesson catapult power";
Bracing yourself on the left foot... is this only applicable to the irons/wedges, or should those mechanics be the same with woods and the driver as well? I only ask because I've heard that when hitting the driver, about 60% of your weight should be on your left foot to start with - this might be completely wrong. Thanks!
Hey Nate! This, as well as the one leg swing and feet together drills can be applied to all clubs; see also the "golf pro lesson 2008 golf swing review part 1 and 2 for a complete picture.
Im sure you heard this before but it looks a little like a reverse pivot, why is that? I have tried the tilt and ball striking was solid but, pulling a lot of shots.
Hey Mac; thanks for the comment! have a look at the "tilted spiral part 3 for the pulls:
the reverse pivot is an out of balance condition; this is not, it is stacked through the body's center of gravity and pivots around this stacked position which keeps you in balance throughout...if you were reverse pivoting, you would be falling over backwards in the finish...Shawn
Hi Jay; very difficult to describe in 500 characters or less...:) But I can tell you that the goal is similar in the sense that we want to stay centered; but they don't brace the same way, use the arms the same way...the efficiency in hitting uphill, ball below feet, feet together, one leg drills...all out the window with them...See "Golf Pro Lesson Learn your golf machine" and "Golf Pro Lesson One leg swing no weightshift" and "Feet together drill" for true stacking; Shawn
Shawn, absolutely great vids as always. This one really hits home, it is exactly the problem I am having, weight is getting stuck on right side resulting in thin, powerless shots. I will practice your tips and I know it will. You are truly, the "Albert Einstein" of golf instruction. Thanks again,
I have been working on getting into a "two cheek position" at impact lagging the club and bowing my left wrist trying to maintain my spine angle. I know from your video's so far that bowing the wrinst and maintaning spine angle are correct, how do you feel about the "two cheek position" can you recommend a specific lesson on this topic? Thanks shawn.
Yes; the latest ones are the "Timing and tempo Update" and the "Bilateral Golf swing"; in the second one, you will see in the second half of the video how I talk about the centre of gravity of the body needing to be more back and low to allow the body the ability to compress the pressure through the ground with the ankles-heels to conter balance the force of the swing like a hammer thrower; this will definitely improve your spine angle...
Have a look at my "golf pro lesson Leverage power" video; I would recommend you get my DVD series as well; 4 hours over 3 discs all in priority sequence...it will answer all your questions and more and will get you to a completely new level where you will be able to ask me some finishing or polishing questions...:)
Great video! In fact, this is exactly the way that I teach the golf swing as well. I basically teach contact first, then move along to face angle and ultimately path (depending on which is needs more immediate attention). I'd like to know your thoughts and how do you go about introducing this, systematically, to your more "beginner" students? Thanks!
hey shawn..thx for the vid's..i did watch the stack/tilt vid and they don't teach falling away from the target as you say above..the hips moving forward set up a slight tilt away from the target but not deliberately..you're closer to their method than u may realize..
"Downswing Weightshift" video, you will see that the brace into or against the left side is what supports the head in it's position behind the ball; the head is behind but the brace is on the left...Check out the Braced tilt Part 2 as well; here in tilted spiral, we polish it some more where the head behind is more subtle; what is more emphatic is the brace against the left...Thanks for the comment! Shawn
Yes of course! This is one of the options; the other option if you allow the weight pressure to come off the left heel in the backswing because you allow the left heel to come off the ground but stay very centered in the turn, is to plant from behind back into the left side WELL Before the arms come down. Have a look at the "Downswing weightshift" and "Hockey Golf" videos for this.
correct me if i'm wrong.. u seem to be swinging in stack and tilt in this video.. its quite distinct from others.. my eyes playing tricks on me..?? frankly.. i'm a 'neutral' golfer who not bias any swing methods..
Great question! This is not stack and tilt; this is pure logic for efficiency; they don't turn like this and they don't brace AGAINST the left side...they get on top of the left then they throw themselves back away from the target as they come through...not the same at all and they can keep what they have...Stay neutral like me! :) Shawn
thanks for the reply.. i like your idea of staying stacked and balance and brace.. one ques.. i tried your idea to change my focus on the target instead of the ball, my spine angle can stay intact.. however, i can only stay focused with traget that are 50yds in.. anythng longer than that, i will tend to focus back on the ball or focus will be wondering thus change my spine angle and add lots of problems.. any tips for staying focus on target that are further? thks..
Pick an object, any object, that's somewhere on your target line, and let that object be your target. You can see this in one of the alignment videos, I find it works quite well.
Hey Yang; sorry I did not see this one; just have a look at the "Alignment Tweak" video and like wayde said below, send the momentum of the swing to any intermediate target you want; I use the 150 yard stakes down the fairway or the tee blocks ahead etc...Shawn
First just wanted to thank you for all your time and knowlegde that you have put in your videos. I just found all of your videos and am extremely impressed. Very detailed, well spoken and you can feel the passion. I am going to order your dvd 100% to support you and best of to improve my game. One question I am having problems with my fairway woods and some low iron off the fairway, any video that you think would help. (seem to be topping the ball sometimes not cons.)
Hey Dragster! Thanks for the kind words and comment! I have a couple good ones for you: "Golf Pro Lesson Fairway woods" and "Golf Pro Lesson Hybrids" where I show with long irons and fairway woods too. All are on my website's "you tube Shawn" page and you can also look at the "Don't Keep the Head Down" part 1 and 2 video too;
I must ask does your tips apply to the single plane swing.
I have tried the two plane swing since I started and it feels very awkward. I read some articles on the single plane swing and I must say it feels much more comfortable swinging with that technique. Please advise. Thanks.
wondering the same thing - especially after looking at how your left knee is moving sideways not forwards. Should I be "ignore" your instruction if I am trying to be a 1-plane golfer? Or just know which bits to take away and those to leave?
If you look at my "golf pro lesson Swing Plane" video, you will see my stance on the one plane swing...please consider that I have spent 7 years in the mid 90s studying Moe's swing and spending time with the ultimate "one planer"
Once you truly start understanding this, you will see that these techniques apply to the "HUMAN BODY", which is "YOUR INSTRUMENT". 2 other vids to understand are "No bones about it" and "Be a solid ball striker"; Shawn
Hi Shawn, thanks for all the great analogies in your vids. I was wondering your perspective( maybe a teaching segment) on " the moment of truth". I heard a tip of keeping your back knee and hip in line at impact helps with effortless power staying connected with your core. It also can provide more consistency. TY
Although understanding where body parts go is important for an analytical player, the key is to change those thoughts into sensations to allow you to perform. That feel in particular you will get from the "leverage Power" video which uses the uphill shot to allow you to feel this correctly. Thanks for the comment! Shawn
When I address the ball I have the heel of the driver next to the ball, but when I hit the ball it is more centered or near the toe. What am I doing wrong? The DVD is great along with the other videos you've done. I have told everybody that is interested in golf to look you up. Thanks again! Terry
It sounds to me like you are standing up out of the shot in the backswing or in the downswing...have a look at the "Golf Pro Lesson Don't Keep your head down" video for a couple of good tips in this area; Shawn
hi shaun its me again i was just wondering when your at the top of your backswing the name on the grip of the club should the name be facing at your face or down at the ground at the top of your swing write back as soon as possible thanks
If you look at the "Grip 2 wrist hinge" video you will get a better idea; I never looked at it that way but you could say that it would face more at the ground at the top of the swing but this would be too subjective...also have a look at the arm motion video...Shawn
hi shaun i was just wondering i am 13 years old and started golf last summer and in the rough i keep getting huge divits what does this mean and what must i do to improve?
This is where you need to understand about the tilt in the swing; on my website's You tube Shawn page, have a look at the "Proper Spine Tilt", "braced Tilt" and Braced Tilt Part 2" videos...it will explain a whole lot to you about why you are taking big divots...Shawn
can u emphasize on your legs when you brace????

"Downswing Weightshift" video, you will see that the brace into or against the left side is what supports the head in it's position behind the ball; the head is behind but the brace is on the left...Check out the Braced tilt Part 2 as well; here in tilted spiral, we polish it some more where the head behind is more subtle; what is more emphatic is the brace against the left...Thanks for the comment! Shawn

shoould you keep your weight on the left side at the start even in drives?
golfrules08 3 years ago
Yes of course! This is one of the options; the other option if you allow the weight pressure to come off the left heel in the backswing because you allow the left heel to come off the ground but stay very centered in the turn, is to plant from behind back into the left side WELL Before the arms come down. Have a look at the "Downswing weightshift" and "Hockey Golf" videos for this.

hey shawn..
correct me if i'm wrong.. u seem to be swinging in stack and tilt in this video.. its quite distinct from others.. my eyes playing tricks on me..?? frankly.. i'm a 'neutral' golfer who not bias any swing methods..
YangLYY 3 years ago

WaydeJohnson 3 years ago
Hey Yang; sorry I did not see this one; just have a look at the "Alignment Tweak" video and like wayde said below, send the momentum of the swing to any intermediate target you want; I use the 150 yard stakes down the fairway or the tee blocks ahead etc...Shawn

Shawn,
First just wanted to thank you for all your time and knowlegde that you have put in your videos. I just found all of your videos and am extremely impressed. Very detailed, well spoken and you can feel the passion. I am going to order your dvd 100% to support you and best of to improve my game. One question I am having problems with my fairway woods and some low iron off the fairway, any video that you think would help. (seem to be topping the ball sometimes not cons.)
dragster750 3 years ago
Hey Dragster! Thanks for the kind words and comment! I have a couple good ones for you: "Golf Pro Lesson Fairway woods" and "Golf Pro Lesson Hybrids" where I show with long irons and fairway woods too. All are on my website's "you tube Shawn" page and you can also look at the "Don't Keep the Head Down" part 1 and 2 video too;

Shawn,
I must ask does your tips apply to the single plane swing.

Thanks for the great videos!

Hey Guys; Good question!

Shawn

Shawn-
When I address the ball I have the heel of the driver next to the ball, but when I hit the ball it is more centered or near the toe. What am I doing wrong? The DVD is great along with the other videos you've done. I have told everybody that is interested in golf to look you up. Thanks again! Terry

Hi Terry! Thanks for that!
It sounds to me like you are standing up out of the shot in the backswing or in the downswing...have a look at the "Golf Pro Lesson Don't Keep your head down" video for a couple of good tips in this area; Shawn

Shawn, I just want to say thanks for all the great videos on youtube.
As a new golfer, I check online everyday to see if you have new ones up to help my golf game.
Also your DVD is really helping, I review it before I play golf every weekend.
Thanks!!

hi shaun its me again i was just wondering when your at the top of your backswing the name on the grip of the club should the name be facing at your face or down at the ground at the top of your swing write back as soon as possible thanks
golfrules08 3 years ago
If you look at the "Grip 2 wrist hinge" video you will get a better idea; I never looked at it that way but you could say that it would face more at the ground at the top of the swing but this would be too subjective...also have a look at the arm motion video...Shawn

hi shaun i was just wondering i am 13 years old and started golf last summer and in the rough i keep getting huge divits what does this mean and what must i do to improve?
golfrules08 3 years ago
This is where you need to understand about the tilt in the swing; on my website's You tube Shawn page, have a look at the "Proper Spine Tilt", "braced Tilt" and Braced Tilt Part 2" videos...it will explain a whole lot to you about why you are taking big divots...Shawn
