@2009whatayear True, but the more power there is the harder it would be to ride. You'd hit the gas a little too hard and find yourself doing flips inside of it, lol.
There are some pretty significant issues with the monocycle design. One problem is that when you slam on the breaks, it doesn't stop, you simply become part of the wheel.
im planning on building one for myself soon :) so far i have materials for the frame and the engine. anyone have any suggestions for how big the innertube/tire should be?
it should be in the shape of an oval not a circle. this circle shape is not safe for high speeds because the person might start to tilt upside down. an oval shape will keep the rider level at all times.
Oval's are not energy efficient. Essentially, the variable slope of the curve will cause the frame to absorb rotational energy at the top of the front and bottom of the back of the oval, about above and below the focii.
@cypherdtraitor you could be right about that. i suggested to oval to keep the rider from "rocking back and forth" as they ride the monowheel. but maybe an oval would be more troublesome than a circle. so how do you suppose the cycle should be built so that the rider has a safe and stable ride (i don't want fools to be flying down the street upside down at 100 miles an hour endangering everybody as they try to "pull off a stunt")
By having a rotating disc above the monocycle (gyroscope), the monocycle would be more stable. Though it now would not lean but by altering the torque on the gyroscope the direction of the monocycle could be altered.
That is a brilliant idea. I was going to suggest the same thing, but I couldn't figure out a good configuration for the gyroscope. Mounting it on top would help keep the monocycle stable, and by sitting a large gyroscope in a shoulder socket, it could also stabilize side to side.
That's basically how they work already. The weight of the wheel is enough of a gyro and leaning exerts force on the axis which is shifted 90 degrees by the gyroscopic effect thus steering the monocycle. Bicycles are stable because of the gyroscopic effect of the spinning wheels in much the same way.
I know what's wrong with those bikes..to make them DRIVABLE you need to put a weight on the upper part of the frame..a weight wich can lean to the left if you wanna go left..and viceversa ;)
I can make a simulation to prove my point right if you want ;)
the pendulum effect would make a swinging weight pretty damn unstable, unless you are talking about something controllable mechanically which would only serve to make it extremely top heavy and therefore unstable anyway......
are you a physicist or an engineer ? I know what I'm talking about..and I know it works...I never talked about HEAVY things..obviously..everything needs to be calculated on PAPER first...so..no one knows if it must be heavy or not unless we got some prior data to study on..
anyway..the concept is the same even on a bicycle..just lean your head , the bike will lean accordingly...try it on your own and let me know.....

Honestly if you wore skates you could keep your feet down and on the ground to maintain stability.

if that is the case then you would need a track of some sort rather then just having an outside wheel.

@473NG3R...The reason for a second gyroscope, ther first being the wheel itself, is to keep the rider inside from rocking up and down.

put a good gyro on there and it would be as stable as a rock. Try doing that with a pogo stick.
