A fully built miata with a ls1 would have no problem making straights vanish better than the viper, and still cost about half the price, all while handling better. Stop quoting skid pad G's of the stock cars please, miatas have seen over 1.3G's through corners. Vipers could be faster with a lighter, higher revving V8 instead of the costly V10 thats just decent when it comes to similar V10's. The V10 is pointless in that car, many V8's have higher output. Cant argue with that....

I race both an 01 GTS and a 94 miata. Both are fast. Stock miata is no match for the viper, period. The Miata is more fun to drive and more forgiving. everyone hates vipers because they'll never have one. It's called car envy ;) its just like all non miata owners making fun of miata's, because at the end of the day odds are they were out run by one.

@costello62 Sorry but at Targa Tasmania last year my Mx-5 was flogging the two viper entries. Just depends on the track and what your using it for. The Mx-5s aren't that forgiving either, the short wheelbase keeps you on your toes if your really pushing them on a track.
@gnarkillkicksass I did say stock miata. I assume yours wasn't a stock car racing targa. (maybe though) events especially a targa event will have many different levels of drivers. You can't base the performance of a car on who beats who. Driving is a huge part of it.

Similar fun to the biggest big boy toys, classic look, easy to work on...You can buy a $3,000 93 and add a turbo and good tires and you are in the game for less than $10,000...and if you are mechanically inclined you may do some internal engine work to help handle the higher revs that will be coming with a turbo.
Or go bone stock and get 30 mpg on the highway....and have a drop top that will never let you down
if I remember correctly that miata was $15-16k when it came out and we are 20 years down the line and they are still being sold used at $4k+ with 120k+ miles I think they held their value pretty well and they are still fun to drive well unless it's a place with alot of straight away but they corner so fast you can just hammer them all the way through a turn and it doesn't fight you at all
The Viper is not a bad handling car, it's consistently low track times show this. Instead of going HURF HURF MIATA SUPREMACY, why has no one yet realized that the Viper driver, in what looks to be a totally stock car, is not as good of a driver as the guy who is driving what appears to be a built race car?

@MrAMERICANxMUSCLE how so b/c they can easily last 300K+ miles? or b/c its a 2000lb sports car with 50:50 weight ratio for under $4000(yeah thats how much mine was with 83K w/ LSD and ABS) Yeah they dont have 900hp but for 130hp they are pretty quick, and will rip most cars in turns. Ontop of that theyre cheap to tune and little horsepower makes a big difference. 180hp will yeild 0-60 time of 4.3 secs, thats much faster than 7 secs @ 130hp. Drop a rotary in, imagine 250hp stock with less weight.

It's pretty obvious the Miata is a Spec Miata... The Viper looks like a street car, possibly an ACR, and if so is on track prepped faster than a T1 Viper would be - without the restrictor plates. The Viper went too slow into the turn, the Miata knew not to brake too hard, but the viper got a killer exit... This is racing. Forget what the magazines read, once a car is prepared for the track everything you know is worth forgetting. :) Miata handling is insane, all you need to take away from this.
No, you don't need a hardtop to race in an SCCA sanctioned race. The Spec Miata series allows an open top. My guess is that this Miata is in the Spec Miata or maybe ITE class. The Viper has racing stripes ... that means that it's hella modified, twin turbo, Lingenfelter edition =\ You bring up a good point, mrpedalsworth, that the driver makes a huge difference in the speed around a race track. Kids these days don't understand that at all.
lingenfelter never turbocharged vipers, and yes, you most definitely need a hard top in place to run spec miata. but i will agree, in roadcourse racing, the driver matters ALOT
My guess? Class prepped Miata Engine/chassie/brake/race tires and lightening. My evidence is the Hard top. I think SCCA requires a hard top to race, like the Solstice class,they have to run hard tops also. Oh, and the sponsor logo's and number! The Viper appears to be stock? And this seems to be a test and tune or "fun" day. The Viper guy probably brought his car to the track to have fun. The Miata guy is probably tuning his car for a race series. 2 VERY different tuned cars and Drivers.
This is a classic example of why these videos are miss leading. First, and most important, which driver is more experienced? Which driver knows the track better? which driver has more seat time in there car? What modifications have been done to the cars? Everything I've read in a number of Auto Magazines Say the Viper out performs the Miata in most every way. Skidpad, Viper 1.01G Miata .87G. Slalom mph, Viper 70.2 mph, Miata 67mph. Breaking 80-0 and 60-0 mph, Viper 116/198 Miata 115/205 mph.
Vipers are junk! That Miata totally ate that Viper in the turns. Spend $70,000 for a Viper and go slow and break down a lot, or...spend $6,000 for a used Miata, go fast and keep on screaming "FAST"!!!

Spec miatas with skilled drivers regularly turn better lap times than cars with MUCH more power than them.
FYI< Vipers dont handle THAT well. I mean its good, but not amazing. I have driven a couple. Id take one as a weekend toy, but not for a track car. You can build a miata that will wipe the track with that viper for 15k. Which one would you rather buy tires for or crash into a wall?
The Miata was able to make the pass because of Viper driver error both cars have equal handeling. The Viper has so much power that it's easy to misjudge the next corner. The guy in the Viper most likley saw the Miata gaining on him and wisley let him go by. On a half mile or less autocross track a Miata can, will & has posted same track times as Vipers and late model Vettes. Inexperianced fags should NOT comment on something they know nothing about!
vipers are nice and just fast on striaghts. We all can go through numbers, but give and take situation, miata can be found around for 500.00 to 10,000 dallors. While a viper ...well lets just say im not going to pay for a vehicle with worser interior then a civic. In a auto cross, solo series you would wont the most agile and stable vehicle to race with. The miata is a track car, built for the track and will always belong on a track.
I'm simply saying give it some real power. What size turbo, umm...something along the lines of an FPgreen. You might say, what the f* ck is that. It was THE turbo for Eclipse/Talons when I was into imports back in the late 90's/early 2000. They were putting out huge numbers at the wheels, pushing heavy (3000+lbs) AWD GSX's/TSi's into the mid-low 11's. I think that's the turbo that was on the Eclipse/Talons that competed in Sport Compact Cars "Ultimate Street Car Challenge".
But for a Miata, whatever will give the least lag while pushing 350+ at the rear wheels. But of course at that power level the Miata needs an RX-7 Turbo II trans/rear-end/axels/yada yada.
Superchargers are great, but at high power levels they just can't compete with turbos on a small displacement, low torque, low compression engines due to their ineffeciency.
With that kind of power to weight ratio in a balanced, light weight RWD chassis, I can't think of too many production based cars that could keep up. Not to mention nothing in the price class of a built Miata, other than an equally built 240sx.
okay, the miata is "better" handling.. and everything.. but with the exception of braking, the viper has more grip, period. Tire vs hp/weight ration is just so much better. What you see there is all driver.
you are right.. stock miata Gs are lower than the above but the stock 185 wheels dont grip as good as 225+ so gotta think of this too when comparing stock gs and stuff. Obviously that miata wasnt stock, the viper may have been tuned too and we only saw one corner so you really cant say who won.

Triple88a the Miata dosn't take advantage of its wieght. The last time I read up on it its objective numbers weren't amazing (they were lower than some of the cars u mentioned), but its subjectives were good. With a better suspension and chassis it would do better, but that would interfere with price. The other cars might feel heavier when infact they're cornering better.
Thats because stock miatas arent ment for racing.. stock miatas have 185/175-50R13/14 wheels man.. :) Simply not enough rubber on the road to put down. Aftermarket wheels on this thing make huge difference. On mine i installed 205s.. couldnt even get it to drift.. it was like a rolercoaster man.. scares the sht out of me when turning fast...
theomega is right, I was a little overzealous defending the Viper against the ignorant. But the Viper still is a very capable car in the corners, even this older models holds 1g and has 70 mph slalom.
If wieght determins cornering than the Miata must corner better than ALMS GT cars(min wieght 2500 lb). It doesn't. The Viper's lower ride hieght, and stiffer suspension and chassis gives it good cornering performance. Also small, width wise, is bad; less grip. I know how cars work.
Weight affects just about everything about a car: Acceleration, handling, braking, fuel effeciency. An ALMS GT car is a full blown racecar you idiot. I would hope a Viper has a stiffer chassis as it weighs 1,200 lbs more than the Miata, not to mention it's price used is 10x more than the used Miata in the video. Simply put, $10k into the Miata (built turbo engine, wheel spacers, chassis braces, top notch suspension) and it will kill ANY production car on the track.
An ALMS GT car is a race car, who dosen't know that? I was making a point. Yes weight affects everything, but it won't automatically make the Miata better, and you'll need more than 10G to take on a Viper.
forgive me if i figured this out wrong, but say this is a second gen viper. They weigh in at 3400lbs, and put out 400hp. That works out to 0.11hp/lb. The first gen miata weighs in at 2100lbs. 0.11x2100 = 241hp.. The miata would only need 241hp to keep up. That can be done for alot less than $10,000...
It would need 273, the Viper has 450 hp. But I see your point. However, it would need more than power. Tires and suspension at least. Maybe transmission, but I think the stock could handle less than 300hp. I'm not an expert tuner though so I can't give an accurate price. I've learned a bit during the past 2 years.
how bout a 400ci small block chevy, twin turbo putting out 850 hp on a complete tein suspension kit, with a 400t tranny 4 speed semi auto dropped 3 inches, and a borla low restriction exhaust system... wave as u pass the f430 on the highway

if I remember correctly that miata was $15-16k when it came out and we are 20 years down the line and they are still being sold used at $4k+ with 120k+ miles I think they held their value pretty well and they are still fun to drive well unless it's a place with alot of straight away but they corner so fast you can just hammer them all the way through a turn and it doesn't fight you at all

More like $7,500 versus $80,000....That is the point of the MX-5 in nutshell. Similar fun to the biggest big boy toys, classic look, easy to work on...You can buy a $3,000 93 and add a turbo and good tires and you are in the game for less than $10,000...and if you are mechanically inclined you may do some internal engine work to help handle the higher revs that will be coming with a turbo.
Or go bone stock and get 30 mpg on the highway....and have a drop top that will never let you down

1. To drive is the verb "fahren".
2. Nouns are always capital, verbs are not. So "Miatas" should be capital, but "Laufwerk" should not.
3. "der" should be "des" because "des" is the possessive form of der/die/das.

@MrAMERICANxMUSCLE how so b/c they can easily last 300K+ miles? or b/c its a 2000lb sports car with 50:50 weight ratio for under $4000(yeah thats how much mine was with 83K w/ LSD and ABS) Yeah they dont have 900hp but for 130hp they are pretty quick, and will rip most cars in turns. Ontop of that theyre cheap to tune and little horsepower makes a big difference. 180hp will yeild 0-60 time of 4.3 secs, thats much faster than 7 secs @ 130hp. Drop a rotary in, imagine 250hp stock with less weight.

It's pretty obvious the Miata is a Spec Miata... The Viper looks like a street car, possibly an ACR, and if so is on track prepped faster than a T1 Viper would be - without the restrictor plates. The Viper went too slow into the turn, the Miata knew not to brake too hard, but the viper got a killer exit... This is racing. Forget what the magazines read, once a car is prepared for the track everything you know is worth forgetting. :) Miata handling is insane, all you need to take away from this.

No, you don't need a hardtop to race in an SCCA sanctioned race. The Spec Miata series allows an open top. My guess is that this Miata is in the Spec Miata or maybe ITE class. The Viper has racing stripes ... that means that it's hella modified, twin turbo, Lingenfelter edition =\ You bring up a good point, mrpedalsworth, that the driver makes a huge difference in the speed around a race track. Kids these days don't understand that at all.

My guess? Class prepped Miata Engine/chassie/brake/race tires and lightening. My evidence is the Hard top. I think SCCA requires a hard top to race, like the Solstice class,they have to run hard tops also. Oh, and the sponsor logo's and number! The Viper appears to be stock? And this seems to be a test and tune or "fun" day. The Viper guy probably brought his car to the track to have fun. The Miata guy is probably tuning his car for a race series. 2 VERY different tuned cars and Drivers.

This is a classic example of why these videos are miss leading. First, and most important, which driver is more experienced? Which driver knows the track better? which driver has more seat time in there car? What modifications have been done to the cars? Everything I've read in a number of Auto Magazines Say the Viper out performs the Miata in most every way. Skidpad, Viper 1.01G Miata .87G. Slalom mph, Viper 70.2 mph, Miata 67mph. Breaking 80-0 and 60-0 mph, Viper 116/198 Miata 115/205 mph.

Spec miatas with skilled drivers regularly turn better lap times than cars with MUCH more power than them.
FYI< Vipers dont handle THAT well. I mean its good, but not amazing. I have driven a couple. Id take one as a weekend toy, but not for a track car. You can build a miata that will wipe the track with that viper for 15k. Which one would you rather buy tires for or crash into a wall?

The Miata was able to make the pass because of Viper driver error both cars have equal handeling. The Viper has so much power that it's easy to misjudge the next corner. The guy in the Viper most likley saw the Miata gaining on him and wisley let him go by. On a half mile or less autocross track a Miata can, will & has posted same track times as Vipers and late model Vettes. Inexperianced fags should NOT comment on something they know nothing about!

vipers are nice and just fast on striaghts. We all can go through numbers, but give and take situation, miata can be found around for 500.00 to 10,000 dallors. While a viper ...well lets just say im not going to pay for a vehicle with worser interior then a civic. In a auto cross, solo series you would wont the most agile and stable vehicle to race with. The miata is a track car, built for the track and will always belong on a track.

I'm simply saying give it some real power. What size turbo, umm...something along the lines of an FPgreen. You might say, what the f* ck is that. It was THE turbo for Eclipse/Talons when I was into imports back in the late 90's/early 2000. They were putting out huge numbers at the wheels, pushing heavy (3000+lbs) AWD GSX's/TSi's into the mid-low 11's. I think that's the turbo that was on the Eclipse/Talons that competed in Sport Compact Cars "Ultimate Street Car Challenge".

Superchargers are great, but at high power levels they just can't compete with turbos on a small displacement, low torque, low compression engines due to their ineffeciency.
With that kind of power to weight ratio in a balanced, light weight RWD chassis, I can't think of too many production based cars that could keep up. Not to mention nothing in the price class of a built Miata, other than an equally built 240sx.

you are right.. stock miata Gs are lower than the above but the stock 185 wheels dont grip as good as 225+ so gotta think of this too when comparing stock gs and stuff. Obviously that miata wasnt stock, the viper may have been tuned too and we only saw one corner so you really cant say who won.

Triple88a the Miata dosn't take advantage of its wieght. The last time I read up on it its objective numbers weren't amazing (they were lower than some of the cars u mentioned), but its subjectives were good. With a better suspension and chassis it would do better, but that would interfere with price. The other cars might feel heavier when infact they're cornering better.

Thats because stock miatas arent ment for racing.. stock miatas have 185/175-50R13/14 wheels man.. :) Simply not enough rubber on the road to put down. Aftermarket wheels on this thing make huge difference. On mine i installed 205s.. couldnt even get it to drift.. it was like a rolercoaster man.. scares the sht out of me when turning fast...

try viewing one of the bestmotoring video series and see what a honda s2k can do and you'll understand

If wieght determins cornering than the Miata must corner better than ALMS GT cars(min wieght 2500 lb). It doesn't. The Viper's lower ride hieght, and stiffer suspension and chassis gives it good cornering performance. Also small, width wise, is bad; less grip. I know how cars work.

Weight affects just about everything about a car: Acceleration, handling, braking, fuel effeciency. An ALMS GT car is a full blown racecar you idiot. I would hope a Viper has a stiffer chassis as it weighs 1,200 lbs more than the Miata, not to mention it's price used is 10x more than the used Miata in the video. Simply put, $10k into the Miata (built turbo engine, wheel spacers, chassis braces, top notch suspension) and it will kill ANY production car on the track.

An ALMS GT car is a race car, who dosen't know that? I was making a point. Yes weight affects everything, but it won't automatically make the Miata better, and you'll need more than 10G to take on a Viper.

forgive me if i figured this out wrong, but say this is a second gen viper. They weigh in at 3400lbs, and put out 400hp. That works out to 0.11hp/lb. The first gen miata weighs in at 2100lbs. 0.11x2100 = 241hp.. The miata would only need 241hp to keep up. That can be done for alot less than $10,000...

It would need 273, the Viper has 450 hp. But I see your point. However, it would need more than power. Tires and suspension at least. Maybe transmission, but I think the stock could handle less than 300hp. I'm not an expert tuner though so I can't give an accurate price. I've learned a bit during the past 2 years.

how bout a 400ci small block chevy, twin turbo putting out 850 hp on a complete tein suspension kit, with a 400t tranny 4 speed semi auto dropped 3 inches, and a borla low restriction exhaust system... wave as u pass the f430 on the highway
