  • Don't get me wrong, Nalgene bottles are great, however, the new plastic, Eastman Tritan Copolyester is not as heat resistant as the old polycarbonate bottles. My Nalgene warped from boiling and caused micro stress cracks. This doesn't happen to all of them, but nonetheless don't risk it.

  • You had me until you said "Folgers"

  • As one coffe-holic to another.... well done on the fresh coffee!

  • BPA is BS created by Al Gore.

  • Why not put the coffee in the filter before you pour the hot water in? Is that not how drip coffee is made?

  • @wb5mgr I use this piece of equipment exactly as you describe. Makes proper cowboy coffee. Also my experience is that the method described in the video yields WEAK coffee (regardless of how dark it looks in the video). FOR ME it's too weak. YMMV!

So yes, coffee first, then filter, then top. It's much messier, but good coffee is that important.

  • @MrSweetieJayDub so you're saying, add coffee into the water. let stand, attach filter, then pour into cup? so while you're pouring, it's filtering? sounds good :D

  • @bieli0 Yes that's the way *I* use the nalgene coffee filter. Like I said, it's messy, but the coffee ends up being better.

  • haha pocket rocket

  • will the heat of the coffee make the plastic leach chemicals? i have a bpa free one but it really doesnt seam like a good idea to do this.

  • @iplaythe4string so far so good.. I haven't gotten sick

  • @gwynn1975 Ah.. but are your breasts getting bigger?

  • @iplaythe4string no the bpa free one is bpa free... so it can hold heated liquids and remain safe.

  • @iplaythe4string hi there, its not a problem at all with the nalgene bottles, i was talking with some of the mountain rescue team members last winter. they said nalgene are the best bottles to use because you can boil your water in the evening (for the next days drinking) and use the bottle as a hot water bottle in your sleeping bag over night.

this trick is now part of my routine while on the trail

  • makes me wanna go out and buy; and I dont even drink coffee :)

  • @ez2curanut It works with tea too!! Thanks for watching

  • Hey Gwinn, using the SS cup, does it tend to get too hot for your lip or is it insulated in some way. I got a "Hot Lip" on my gi mug (SS) so i switched to the GSI nested cup and bowl, whew...all better. P.S. thanks for the info and time spent in all your videos

  • @thesimpleoutdoors It does get hot, but I love being able to put the cup on my stove or in the fire if I need to. Thanks for watching

  • Lol srry if this seems stupid but i pour my water through the the coffee filter with the coffee grounds in it. I think thats how its ment to be used

  • @swiftufag1001 You can actually do it either way.. The directions say so.. Thanks for watching

  • I still wouldn't pour boiling hot water into a plastic bottle.

  • @ustfu It took me a little bit before I trusted it. I do it all the time now.

  • @gwynn1975 It's not the plastic that will melt, but more the chemicals that would be released under high temperatures. Unless of course Nalgene came out with a new bottle material that safely allows this?

  • @MKlukowski There are bottles like the Nalgene that are safe to reuse. Normal plastic will release harmful chemicals even without heat over time. Perhaps the plastics that are safe are also safe with heat?

  • @ustfu Depends on how good the plastic is.

  • Mmmmm, fresh Coffee. Nice video, thanks.

  • @unowild i agree.. Mmmmmmm

    Thanks for watching

  • Many thanks for this vid. This just what I needed to help get the wife out camping with me.

  • @chasfred52 Glad I could help! Thanks for watching

  • nice video man, very clever to find a pot that fits so tightly around the water bottle.

  • @1111Davo1 Thank you sir!

  • I bought the H2JO after watching this video. Unfortunately, it doesn't seal on the 38oz stainless Nalgene from Guyot.

  • @CaptSyn Oh man.. sorry to hear that.. It advertised that it would

  • @gwynn1975 I read a review on it earlier tonight that said it won't seal on some GSI bottles as well. I might see if I can find some sort of thin gasket material and cut out a ring to fix it. Better yet, there might be a large o-ring available at the big box home improvement stores or farm supply places. That should do the trick.

  • @CaptSyn good luck.. Please let me know what works.. Thanks for the info

  • @gwynn1975 I picked up a couple 2 inch ID O-rings, 1/8 inch thick, today at a little country hardware store. They seal the H2JO very well. I placed one under it and one above. They both stay in place when the parts are unscrewed but can be shaken out, so I think they will do nicely. Cost was only $1.50.

I tried the O-ring with the standard plastic Nalgene lid on the 38oz stainless bottle, but it was too thick for the lid to catch the threads.

  • @CaptSyn Thanks for the update..

  • Long time subscriber must have missed this one.

    Coffee= nectar of the gods.

  • @SECRETBOL No problem. Glad you found it, and I agree about the coffee.. It's like my American Express.. Don't leave home without it

  • That's great, proper coffee on the trail!

  • @ScottStorm1 LOL.. Thanks for watching

  • Nice filter but would it not be easier to carry "instant" coffee? Another excellent video!

  • @CablloBlanco It would be easier for one cup at a time, but I'm a heavy coffee drinker.. This way I can store some for later and just heat it up in my cup over the stove.. I actually carry the "tea bag" style instant coffee for a quick cup, but I use this more when I'm in camp.. Thanks for watching..

  • Nalgene (#7 polycarbonate plastic) IS THE MOST DANGEROUS plastic! Do your research. Even a Today Show news clip about the Nalgenes.

  • @Laniemarie427 Thanks for the heads up

  • Excellent! I don't know too many people that don't like coffee!

  • @DangerousDude2010 me neither!!! thanks for watching

  • @gwynn1975 I don't like coffee XD

    I'll bring coco :)

  • @ViolentKisses87 Sounds good.. I like coco too..

  • @gwynn1975 I'm glad that you will have someone you can share COCOA with. :)

  • where can i get that coffee filter? Thanks for the video

  • @sksman71 I got mine at REI.com

  • Does this coffee filter work with the Guyot stainless bottles

  • @Texasoutback Yes.. as long as it is a wide mouth bottle

  • nice vid

  • @Eldetyr Thanks!! Stay tuned for more updates

  • nice video, is it okay to put hot water in nalegene bottles?

  • @stark184 yes.. they are good for liquids up to 200 degrees f.

  • Great video, and well done. Thanks for the information and time spend.

    SteveK

  • @SteveK1953 Thanks alot SteveK..

  • I'm sure someone else posted this, but Press-bot makes a french press style insert for Nalgene that works very well. Used it in Iraq for 15 months... made better coffee, and was faster than a percolator or drip. Only problem was the cleanup... major hassle without ample amounts of water.

  • @point177 I'll have to check that out.. thanks

  • would the filter work with the slandered 38oz metal bottles?

  • The filter works with most wide mouth water bottles

  • Hey are you able to use that GSI cup that you used to boil the water with on a fire or just on a stove?

  • The coffee mug you can put over a fire, but the pot has a rubber handle that would melt with an open flame. Thanks for watching

  • where did you get the gsi stainless steel cup at? I cant seem to find it anywhere.

  • I found it at a local sporting goods store here in WA.. I tried to find it online also, and can't seem to find it anywhere either

  • Ok thanks for your help.

  • No problem.. Thanks for watching

  • Neat little filter insert. Nothing beats real coffee. Can't stand instant either. I guess that would work for loose tea too, for the tea people.

  • Yeah it works for tea also.. For coffee, you want to use percolater grounds though.. Thanks for watching

  • excellent job two thumbs up would like to see u make lunch outdoors sometime with the kit u have awesome job gwynn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks again.. Will do on the lunch vid!

  • Sweet!!! can I get a cup too, 5***** I like the tactical reviews too

  • Sure!!! LOL.. Thanks for the support 619

  • I love all your review videos. Thank you for working hard so we can enjoy and get the first look on them to decide if it's the right gear for us. Your videos are all 5*. Please don't stop making it.

  • Thank you for the support mukatsukuful.. Don't worry, no plans on quitting soon

  • sweet, congrats, nice way of living

  • Thank you.. it is nice to get out and see the outdoors

  • that is one sweet bottle!

  • Thanks ironpeter

  • I found that regular grounds seem to make it through a little bit. Im going to try grinding my own and grind them a little coarser than regular grounds

  • Yeah, I noticed that too, but I don't mind

  • coffee is made to be only one way tall strong and black just like my women

  • ummm ok

  • it was a ref. to your pref. of creamer and suger in your coffee

  • Comment removed

  • Thats a neat way to make coffee. I will have to look for that set up.

  • I love coffee. It's a must every morning. I use a Percolator when camping.

    Great Video! 5 Stars!

  • Me too!! I used to have a Perc. but I guess I'm also a sucker for new gadgets.. I love this filter

  • Thanks for posting Gwynn. Thats a great piece of gear. Gonna have to take a look at that next trip to CampMor. Hope you enjoyed the coffee and caught a few fish.

    5/5

  • No fish but a great cup of joe!

  • That's a kool filter for that bottle man

  • Thanks Cgreen.. It works great!

  • Thanks gwynn i know what i neeeed for Christmas lol that coffee maker looks great

  • No problem CrisRoc.. It makes a great stocking stuffer

  • Hey, that's the GSI cup I have! Great choice!

  • Yeah I love it because the Nalgene nestles inside the cup.. Keeps the clutter down

  • good info and demonstration

does it leave a coffee taste in the bottle when you use it for water?

  • Thanks multicam.. It does if you don't clean the bottle really really good.. That bottle is actually kept seperate from my drinking bottle.. I actually use a Platypus bladder to drink from on the trail

  • Hey great vid! Thats a great setup for coffee. I too hate those instant coffee's. I have that GSI pot, but that filter setup is nice. I have those coffee bags (like a tea bag) those work pretty well and its real coffee. Keep up the good work.

  • Thanks Triggertime.. I've used the coffee bags, but I'm a coffee junkie, so I like to be able to drink more than one cup at a time.. The Nalgene bottle keeps it warm for awhile, but I'm going to buy a neoprene cover for it, to insulate it better

  • Great job man.

Those hot drinks are a great morale booster in shtf scenario.

Makes you feel civilised- even if its only for a few short minutes.

  • No kidding.. I was able to fish for a while longer with a hot cup of coffee..

  • Awesome piece of kit...great job!

  • Thank you 3charter..

  • Nice Gwynn...looked damn cold out there!! Did you catch anything while you were out fishing?

  • Unfortunately, no I didn't.. The rainbows won't start really biting up there for another couple of weeks.. I just figured I'd give it a try anyways

  • Ahhh That's too bad. I've been out hunting and fishing, freezing my arse off and come home empty handed. It's still fun being outdoors, but disappointing nonetheless. Better luck next time my friend!

  • LOL.. thanks CLD.. it was nice just to get out.. I've been working so much in preps for Xmas, this was my first day off all month so far.. so I didn't really mind not catching anything

  • i had no idea that they made filters for the nalgene bottle. thanks for sharing! that setup would go nicely with my new jetboil personal cooking system. 5/5!

  • no problem! glad I could help

  • pretty cool vid...nice picture at the end

  • thank you Castillo

  • that is a Nice gear what is the cost on the filter ? and here can i get one Online ?
