  • These days of ultra reliability are great in some ways, but barring wet weather and/or a really chaotic race, these surprise results happen so rarely. It's great to see the little guys do well, yet they so rarely do.

The only one I can think of recently was Fisichella's at Spa in 09.

  • OH! I remember this race!!!

  • да! необычная гонка

  • Such a shame these surprise victories are rare in F1 nowadays.

The last I can think of was Johnny Herbert winning in the Stewart-Ford in Nurburgring 1999.

Ok, maybe Sebastian Vettel winning with Toro Rosso in Monza in 2008.

It would be nice if Kobayashi won with the Sauber, Sutil in the Force India or even Heidfeld in any car.

  • winning Monaco in a Ligier Mugen is bigger success than 10 consecutive titles in a superior car, period

  • panis such a sad case he was quick but after his accident in canada 1997 he never found his form still great racer

  • What is the song?

  • @MarcellHarmati

King For a day by Jamiroquai

  • 3:12

i saw someone else there for a sec

  • Panis really deserved this win, if he had better equipment, he would have won more races

  • jay kay a tue mont carlo guy

  • I'll never forget this race!Schumacher was on pole and after some corves he went out and he destroy the front part of his car. This race for a disaster for everybody and at the end Panis won the race!!!!

  • wow look at the amazing camera angles

  • a truly inspirational drive from panis...

i love the way one of his rivals would set the fastest lap and then panis would take a massive chunk (no joke, like 1.5 seconds) out of it not long after...

imagine being able to tell your kids, "i won the monaco grand prix in '96"...

  • @FormulaOneFan4Eva: At one point, while he was way in back, Panis set fastest lap by 8 seconds! At the time, the commentators pointed it out as a big jump, but brushed it off as unimportant because he was so far back! Oops.

  • @FormulaOneFan4Eva yeah, but hill was SSSSOOOO far in front. if it wasn't for his engine failure, it was his race. and jean alesi was leading till he had some technical issue as well. panis drove awesome, but he had a bit of luck. he pushed irvine off at loewes hairpin as well.

  • aaahh!!! I know who Jarno Trulli learned his F1 skills from! Judging by the massive train of cars behind Eddie Irvine, it must have been him!

  • I like the looks of the 1996 ferrari

  • *puke* that's one of the ugliest ferraris ever - the sidepods are especially revolting!

  • you are right! amazing ugly

  • mortelle cette vidéo

  • Last French drivers' victory to date. Hopefully Jules Bianchi will bring the tradition back when he gets a promotion to F1.

  • I will have to respectfully disagree with you. I think the cars from the early to mid 90's were the best. Did you know that Alain Prost's 1990 Ferrari chassis is in the Museum of Modern Art in NYC?

  • @Cangrejero i am agree with you, cangrejero

  • @Cangrejero

Ehhh I'd say mid to late 90's had the best looking cars tbh, but I see how you think the early 90's cars were pretty nice.

  • The cars these days are incredibly ugly, they're not even colourful any more. The Prost in the late 90's was incredibly good looking.

  • Definately, don't know about in 2010, but in 2009 3/4 of the cars where white with a few stripes of colour...a far cry from some of the older models from the 80's & 90's.

  • I Think the best F1 era were at 1998-2003 those cars were beautiful

  • the cars are still beautiful now... in my opinion, it's hard to call an f1 car ugly...

the different eras had beautiful cars for different reasons...

the big front wing and tall rear wing just look the norm' now... we just weren't prepared for such a change, remember when everybody canned the '98 cars?

  • @FormulaOneFan4Eva you are right, but i consider more beautiful the cars from early to mid 90's concretly till 97, in 1998 it was the big change, the cars started to seem like now

  • f1 bis 2003 good after so sucks so not intresant car design its a shit

  • Halb deutsch, halb englisch.

By the way, nice video! Well done!

  • One of the best underdog moments in F1 History fantastic win.....

  • Sad to see Damon so anguished at 3:00. You know he wanted to win that race more than any other on his dad's old stomping grounds.

  • perfect race for Olivier!

  • 2:28 = Ownage

  • One of Olivier Panish`s finest drives...drove like this sometimes but those times didnt come as often as he would have liked

  • excellent race:)

  • Did David Coulthard had Schumachers helmet.

  • You know what, I thought you were talking bullshit at first. Now I've seen the video though, you appear to be right.

  • yeah David was having problems with his helmet, and I guess Michaels helmet fit him perfect and they both had the same Malboro symbol.

  • All Marlboro symbols are the same, Lol! However, when you look at the video at 1:06 and look at Davids helmet, it really does look like Michaels helmet. Looks like a German flag on the helmet, Lol!

  • It is Michael's helmet - DC forgot to bring his.

  • Greatest GP ever!

  • Gauloises= Yum! :P

  • Just watched the extended highlights of this race available on the BBC website at the moment. It really was something special, you always get the feeling that wins mean something else to those people towards the back of the grid. Yes luck entered into it, but he still had to keep a cool head to get it. Frentzen was unlucky he didn't win it himself. Panis did deserve a better car, I always felt he didn't push as hard after his accident in Canada.

  • Looking forward to Monaco this year.. nice vid..

  • Emotional Tribute for a very emotional race. It's the Last Time a French driver win a GP, and in bonus, the greatest of the Year, Monaco!

I hope Sebastien Bourdais make the thing a Monaco :-)

  • Anybody have this race? This is totally my favorite GP of all Time

  • agreed

  • I've never seen a flag being carried on the victory lap!

  • great vid! coulthard couldn't even win with just 3 cars finishing!

  • great video and great song man.

    5 stars!!!!

  • great video ;) 5/5

  • Thanks! It was a fantastic race, so I had excellent source material!

My favorite part is at the very end. The guard on the left side of the screen takes a blast of champagne to the face and doesn't even move.

  • everyone loves an underdog :)

  • Excellent race, good video. Panis really deserved that victory

  • Great music with good song! It was an awesome race.

  • i prefer the old livery of mclaren white/red

  • yeah of course, but this kind of advertising is not modern in these days:)

  • it would look too similar to the force india and the toyota

they should return to the old black and silver livery. much better than that vodafone crap

  • Did you notice that Coulthard was wearing Schumacher's helmet? I'm sure Ron Dennis would have preferred that look!

  • Awesome-O

  • ok thanks

  • awesome video

what is the music on this video???

  • The song is "King for a Day" by Jamiroquai. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

  • Brilliant video on a race that will be as talked about as the 1998 Belgian one. Great vid there too.

  • This was my favourite F1 race ever. Rain, Schumacher crashes lap 1, Panis wins! Couldn't have been better.

  • The best race of the 90's, so much action and drama.

  • Panis war ein guter Fahrer und der 96er Ligier ein schönes Auto!

  • I've always been a Panis Fan, and as quacky89 already said he had a great start in the 97 season. two or three laps before he hase overtaken schumacher to get back in the same lap wit him. he was about to get to the points there again.

he could have been a champion, but after breakin' his legs, he never had that speed again. even if he got to the points at his first race after the accident, it was nürburgring i think!

    great driver!

  • yes, he was back in the points at the nurburgring, his first race back, but he wasnt fast enough to pass Pedro Diniz in the arrows, the guy he owned when they were team mates in 1996, he just seemed to lose all his speed after his accident, a real shame

  • @Madchestermod yes that's true. And it was in canada GP

  • panis had a good start to the 97 season. then he broke his legs and flopped

  • The music should have been David Bowie's Heroes. "We can be heroes.. just for one day" (Panis, lol)

  • irvine che cojone hahahaha

  • 1:31 Fastest Lap!

  • Sorry but Ligier was all the same 2nd in 1980 and obtained 9 victories during hisperiod. Ligier is a big team!!!!

  • Yes, but 16 years previously, and F1 changed a lot since then.

  • lol itz funny to see a ligier win somefing

  • Hill would have won easily if his car hadn't broken down. Alesi would have won too if his gearbox had not malfuntioned. Panis was a bit lucky and he never came close to win another race again. Though he might have won in Barcelona in 1997.

  • Hill Came Second in his arrows cause he had a problem towards the end cause i think it was a gearbox problem but im not sure!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • it was a throttle linkage issue

  • good 2 see a shit team do well much like Taku Sato passing Alonso in Canada for 6th Place in a SUPER AGURI!! lol

  • Er, Ligier were multiple race winners before this you know.. This was admittedly their last, but they were still a top 4/ top 5 team before they went bankrupt.

  • 3 cars finished the race. Hill's engine blew on lap 40.

  • didint panis drive for ligier?

  • Yes he did, this race was their first win in 13 years!

  • thanx, i knew liger was in the tier of minardi and footwork back then

  • Bu zaferin şans olduğunu söyleyenler geri zekalı

  • Bah,Panis was lucky.OK he did well to keep it going when all the others made mistakes, but remember only 3 cars actually finished that race,so his victory was down to the misfortunes of others rather than any inspired driving.Plus he unfairly shunted Irvine out of the way at the Loews hairpin(2:43)and as a fan of Eddie,it bugs me that everyone else here has overlooked this obvious lack of sportsmanship on his part.Imo that move deserved at least a drive thru penalty but he got away scot free.

  • For sure, Panis had quite a bit of luck on his side, but he was still quite fast all race. He overtook several cars before they retired, even discounting his questionable move on Irvine (who, to be fair, was much slower than Panis). At one point, he was lapping 8 seconds faster than Damon Hill!!

  • Good win great to see lower teams WINNING one of the best things in F1

  • Good on him, drove a fantastic race that day.

  • Would have been great to see Hill win that race, seeing that only Ayrton Senna has won more Monacco gp's than Damon's dad, Graham.

  • Panis was becoming a consistent point scorer. That crash he had in Canada '97 changed him forever.

  • so true.

  • coulthard is in schumacher helmet ;]

  • One of the 10 greatest Grand Prix of the 10 last years. Olivier Panis was a little bit lucky but its good to see the small teams wining!!! Congratulations Olivier...10 years later!

  • Panis over took three cars and was the best driver (bar Damon Hill) on the track that day.

  • u all no this was only half the story

  • muy bueno el video

  • this looked like a nice race =)
