These days of ultra reliability are great in some ways, but barring wet weather and/or a really chaotic race, these surprise results happen so rarely. It's great to see the little guys do well, yet they so rarely do.
The only one I can think of recently was Fisichella's at Spa in 09.
I'll never forget this race!Schumacher was on pole and after some corves he went out and he destroy the front part of his car. This race for a disaster for everybody and at the end Panis won the race!!!!
i love the way one of his rivals would set the fastest lap and then panis would take a massive chunk (no joke, like 1.5 seconds) out of it not long after...
imagine being able to tell your kids, "i won the monaco grand prix in '96"...
@FormulaOneFan4Eva: At one point, while he was way in back, Panis set fastest lap by 8 seconds! At the time, the commentators pointed it out as a big jump, but brushed it off as unimportant because he was so far back! Oops.
@FormulaOneFan4Eva yeah, but hill was SSSSOOOO far in front. if it wasn't for his engine failure, it was his race. and jean alesi was leading till he had some technical issue as well. panis drove awesome, but he had a bit of luck. he pushed irvine off at loewes hairpin as well.
I will have to respectfully disagree with you. I think the cars from the early to mid 90's were the best. Did you know that Alain Prost's 1990 Ferrari chassis is in the Museum of Modern Art in NYC?
Definately, don't know about in 2010, but in 2009 3/4 of the cars where white with a few stripes of colour...a far cry from some of the older models from the 80's & 90's.
the cars are still beautiful now... in my opinion, it's hard to call an f1 car ugly...
the different eras had beautiful cars for different reasons...
the big front wing and tall rear wing just look the norm' now... we just weren't prepared for such a change, remember when everybody canned the '98 cars?
@FormulaOneFan4Eva you are right, but i consider more beautiful the cars from early to mid 90's concretly till 97, in 1998 it was the big change, the cars started to seem like now
Halb deutsch, halb englisch.
All Marlboro symbols are the same, Lol! However, when you look at the video at 1:06 and look at Davids helmet, it really does look like Michaels helmet. Looks like a German flag on the helmet, Lol!
Just watched the extended highlights of this race available on the BBC website at the moment. It really was something special, you always get the feeling that wins mean something else to those people towards the back of the grid. Yes luck entered into it, but he still had to keep a cool head to get it. Frentzen was unlucky he didn't win it himself. Panis did deserve a better car, I always felt he didn't push as hard after his accident in Canada.
I've always been a Panis Fan, and as quacky89 already said he had a great start in the 97 season. two or three laps before he hase overtaken schumacher to get back in the same lap wit him. he was about to get to the points there again.
he could have been a champion, but after breakin' his legs, he never had that speed again. even if he got to the points at his first race after the accident, it was nürburgring i think!
yes, he was back in the points at the nurburgring, his first race back, but he wasnt fast enough to pass Pedro Diniz in the arrows, the guy he owned when they were team mates in 1996, he just seemed to lose all his speed after his accident, a real shame
Hill would have won easily if his car hadn't broken down. Alesi would have won too if his gearbox had not malfuntioned. Panis was a bit lucky and he never came close to win another race again. Though he might have won in Barcelona in 1997.
Er, Ligier were multiple race winners before this you know.. This was admittedly their last, but they were still a top 4/ top 5 team before they went bankrupt.
Bah,Panis was lucky.OK he did well to keep it going when all the others made mistakes, but remember only 3 cars actually finished that race,so his victory was down to the misfortunes of others rather than any inspired driving.Plus he unfairly shunted Irvine out of the way at the Loews hairpin(2:43)and as a fan of Eddie,it bugs me that everyone else here has overlooked this obvious lack of sportsmanship on his part.Imo that move deserved at least a drive thru penalty but he got away scot free.
For sure, Panis had quite a bit of luck on his side, but he was still quite fast all race. He overtook several cars before they retired, even discounting his questionable move on Irvine (who, to be fair, was much slower than Panis). At one point, he was lapping 8 seconds faster than Damon Hill!!
One of the 10 greatest Grand Prix of the 10 last years. Olivier Panis was a little bit lucky but its good to see the small teams wining!!! Congratulations Olivier...10 years later!

Such a shame these surprise victories are rare in F1 nowadays.
The last I can think of was Johnny Herbert winning in the Stewart-Ford in Nurburgring 1999.
Ok, maybe Sebastian Vettel winning with Toro Rosso in Monza in 2008.
It would be nice if Kobayashi won with the Sauber, Sutil in the Force India or even Heidfeld in any car.
