"Observe that in all the propaganda of the ecologists—amidst all their appeals to nature and pleas for "harmony with nature"—there is no discussion of man's needs and the requirements of his survival. Man is treated as if he were an unnatural phenomenon. Man cannot survive in the kind of state of nature that the ecologists envision—i.e., on the level of sea urchins or polar bears"-- Ayn Rand
This oil is not for the USA. If it was the oil would go to a Midwestern refinery where it would lower gas prices to 15 midwestern states by .20¢ a Gallon.
The pipeline is goint to the Oil Export Hub of the USA. One oil spill in the Ogallala aquifer 25 Million people & 50,000 Farmers will not have water. Did we learn nothing from BP?
Does anybody even realize that this Tar Sand Oil was leaking into the Rivers before White men even knew that North America even existed? All the Tarsands plants are is a soil recovery system.
At what RATE was this natural leakage? Your logic seems to be that a drop of oil justifies massive spills. There are many slick rationalizations for exploitation.
This oil isn't guaranteed to go to the US. In fact its Canada's goal to diversify their Oil customer base and ship it to China. They could send this oil to the US on existing routes to the mid west. But there aren't ports there to ship it overseas.
I am devastated about what is happening to our beautiful boreal forest. Most Canadians I speak to about this are oblivious and have no idea of the magnitude of the devastation to the land and indigenous people these tarsands are creating. 19 stillborn in 21 pregnancies 3 x the rate of lukemia and lymphoma 7x duct cancer, dead lakes, dead land. Our gov. dragged the Lupicon Cree thru. the courts for 20 yrs when they asked for help. Something is deeply wrong with our country's "Public Servants".
Much of the oil is many metres below ground. Only roughly 2% of the oil needs open pit mining to actually be removed. The oil sands are one of the greenest oil producers in the world. What alternative energy source can be used in place of oil? None, yet. Maybe in 5 years that will change but for now, this is the route we go. Not only that but a great number of these indigenous peoples work for the oil sands and will provide jobs for many Americans as well.
@albertabeefcowboy84 actual numbers is 5000 jobs over 3 years. Have you seen the tar-sands from space? Have you seen what it has already done to our land? What they oil co. intends to do? With an 82% increase in pollution, have you read the environmental reports? Have you seen the alternative drilling wells available in the US? Have you seen Keystone's 12 leaks in 12 months? Where are you getting your information? The misinformation that is shoved down our throats in the media is false.
I have been at the tar sands in person. I have lived in Alberta. The environmental reports are written by people who are earning millions of dollars through causing stress for the oil industry. David Suzuki Al Gore have made millions spewing lies about global warming. Drilling wells is not any less dangerous than building a pipeline. BP ring a bell? I am getting from information through my father who used to work at Energy Mines and Resources as well as the Alberta Research Council
@albertabeefcowboy84 sound a little like special interest groups. After a quick search i see your sources are bias. Wikipedia:".. with an extraction process patent issued to Dr. Karl A. Clark in 1948, laying the foundation for investment in oil sands development." Alberta Innovates - Technology Futures funded by the Alberta Gov. Your current premier took 10000 donation from Beaver Regional Waste Management Service's Commission. Our federal "leader" is the son of an oil baron. not bias at all.

I ask you this: How are we as a country going to PAY for these eventual green technologies and alternative energy resources? If you can't see that oil paves the way to these green solutions then I suggest you research this more.
@albertabeefcowboy84 we remove the privacy bill that gag orders all information and patents on clean energy that compromise the current status quo. the technologies already exists. the death grip a few special interests have on everyone is already slipping. media blackouts are a last ditch attempt to keep us sleeping, but people are waking up and standing up... finally.

@wfmkk Thats what Peter Pond (explorer) noted. Amount and Rate? Not sure. That was over 200 plus years ago.

are you willing to use fewer resources or pay more at the pump to enable us to not need to do these things to keep supply ahead of demand?
