  • Olivia, send this video to Stephen Harper.

Maybe they can make 24 Sussex Drive Enviromentally friendly and energy effecient.

The same goes for the Parliament building.

My tax dollars should be going to pay for a low carbon, enviromentally friendly federal legislature.

The politicians produce enough hot air, we don't need the buildings to make anymore.

  • Many of us would not be able to convert to this level but if we do something, I believe, every little bit helps. Olivia and Jack have been a great inspiration.

My heart is rather full of sadness right now but the main thing is that we keep on moving. Our thoughts are with you Olivia.

  • good job !!

  • Olivia Chow is a great representative for her constituency. Next election I'm voting for NDP.

  • Thank you, Olivia, for your video. I'm an artist, a lighting specialist and work part time at the Home Depot in North Carolina.

I appreciate your information--a good guide for all of us.

    Lois

  • A quality video - I've posted it to my "green" playlist!

  • So Olivia Chow I have heard sophisticated remarks from Canadians about Washington DC being the Kremlin but on Youtube I see that a fellow is moving his electric car factory OUT of Canada- the Federal Government of Canada is still develop the WORDS that it would feel most comfortable using to be a nuisance to drivers and for this reason people who build electric vehicles in Canada are not permitted to sell the vehicles to Canadians so it seems to me Canada has a creepy little Kremlin of its own.

  • @thinazzabird : Olivia Chow is a member of the opposition in Canada, not part of the 'ruling' conservative party. But you are correct, I think we have a large 'Kremlin' as you would put it. Our current government, as well as the majority of our economy has strong ties to the oil and gas industry, that is why we have weak environmental standards. Anyone in Canada who accuses the US of being environmentally unfriendly really needs to take a look in the mirror.

  • Good job!

  • Good job!

  • Hi Olivia...great video...really enjoyed it. One thing I didn't see in your video...where was the clothes line? You can save more energy than any one of those devices in your home will generate by simply using a clothes line to dry your clothes. In the winter, hang small articles in the house...free humidification. I understand, sometimes a dryer is nice, but the energy savings is tremendous when circumstances allow. The cheapest watt is always the one that don't need generated. Cost=20 USD.

  • excelent video tks

  • Shes taken action not just words! You go Olivia! Wheres Jack? :S

  • Nice video

  • I have to look into these solar panels! I didn't know they could do this!

  • I wonder what the cost of savings per year is like in comparison to the cost of installation. How many years would a setup like this cost to pay off?

  • Have to respect that man, Jack Layton, The man lives in a average home(with a few features added by them) but general it's an average home, that the average Canadian has.

He is, the average Canadian, that will be the one to make a difference in office! :D

  • Wow that is so great that they are doing that!!! Especially that it send power back to the city, however I wonder how much all these changes cost, is it really viable for familys to afford this???

  • Last time around I voted Liberal. This time I am going with the NDP. I mean look at the modest lifestyle one of our top 3 political leaders live. Just mind blowing. All the respect to you Jack and Olivia.

    Mirwais

  • we need a party like the NDP in power to give most ordinary people more incentive to do things like this. great video.

  • I am glad to see that you take this action and that you also are working on spreading the good news; the information. A well made video. And Olivia Chow, you have a nice voice.

  • I typed in "green house" to see what people are doing to grow their own food. Probably the next step eh?

I am very impressed with your example and was waiting for the low-flow shower heads but with the solar water heater, you probably don't need to go that far; unless you want that meter to turn back more.

    Well done.

  • Congratulations!!! I am a Brazilian girl who lives in Belo Horizonte, my city has the majority of sollar roofs in the hole country. And here we have 365 days of heat... :-)

  • i would spend all that money on my house not for climate change, but for independence from corporations

  • I miss having her as my MP!

  • good to see a politican practicising what they preach !! good for her !

  • where can I get a rain tank? That's nifty.

  • :))

  • I changed all bulbs to compact florescent [I've saved ONLY $10 yr], put a 5-gallon pale in the shower to collect H2O for indoor/outdoor plants [most soaps don't harm plants and keep the bugs away], collect rainwater, recycle, compost, caulked all inside/outside windows, have insulated metal doors. Added more insulation in my attic and garage. Hang our clothes instead of using a dryer, used dishwasher 2X's in 4 yrs, have LED night-lights, replaced to low flow taps, showerheads and toilets.

  • this is great. I disagree on only one point: She says: "The planet is in serious trouble..."

The planet is fine, and always will be. It is we humans who are in serious trouble.

Earth Day should be renamed Human Day.

  • This video does not mean that you need to vote NDP, if you agree then don't vote for someone and sit back and have them force you to act, vote what you normally vote, but act on your own. People are making a difference more than the government is, like the people who got the wind turbine along the beach in Toronto. These pannels cost about $10,000 for the set since most people are asking how much these things cost.

  • What was the pipe coming into the hall and lighting the hall so that no electricity was required. As to cost, I would like to know costs but..... can we afford now not to have it. We in Australia can tell you what it is like this year to watch our gardens die, huge 100 yo trees having to be cut down and many farmers walking off their land because of no water, wait until we have no produce and everything has to be imported. Everyone should have at least a water tank.

  • It is great to live in a country where a political person is actually doing something about the environment, not just telling everyone else to. (Especially in their personnel lives.) I stay home with my children so they do not have to go to daycare. Our finances are very tight. These energy saving ideas are great if you can afford them. If this were possible for my family, I would do it tomorrow.

  • Thank you for the video. I think there should be more taxes on electricity and gas, so that people have more reasons to save energy!

  • good job Olivia my tracher told us to watch this vid and how much energy it saves and you dont waste water and all that...keep up the good work.

  • I think this is a great video, very informative. However there is no mention as to the initial costs of these items. Most families are having a tough time just paying bills and putting food on the table.Choice food/housing or our planet.Common Mr harper be a real leader.

  • ". . . create jobs. let's do it now."

  • I really liked what they have done. But it would be important to know how much these changes would cost. I love to do the same but the cost is a major issue. Any ideas? Any website to give info?

  • keep in mind whatever costs are involved will only pay themselves off in the long run. I just switched to engergy efficent bulbs (i'd do more but i only rent) and the package actualy said how long they would need to run before they paid themselves off.

most green techs should tell you this sort of thing, so if we want them installed just ask them

  • Very informative video clip and I commend you for your efforts. If I may politely critique, I wish you had explained the initial equipment costs (investment) for your efforts. Your viewers should also be informed the popularity Solar Energy in Europe.

  • Some thoughts...

A good video about showing environmental responsibility totally ruined by ending up being a political advertisement for the NDP.

Torontonians last year were asked to cut down on electricity use only to be rewarded (this year) by a proposed rate increase to offset the money lost due to conservation.

  • This couple not only talk the talk but also walk the walk. They prove that Orange (NDP) is the true Green. They are an inspiration. Thank you both.

  • How much did this cost - Did you get a deal or was this a trial installation?

What would the average Joe expect as a payback? How about Zoning and permit costa? I know those solar panels would cost thousands of dollars! If there is a reasonable payback (less than 5 years)or incentives then I would be interested in getting more information or suggestions of where I can go for more info, even tours of such installations.

    Thks

  • (cont'd) By all means, integrate this stuff into new construction, but forget about subsidizing it as was suggested above. If it doesn't pay for itself, it is wasting resources. The wise stewardship of the planet's resources is what this is all about, not salving one's conscience with acts that might actually make things worse.

  • Fascinating stuff. I am glad these technologies are being developed. Hopefully they will become cost effective for the masses in the future. However, I doubt the amount you say you save on your electricity bill covers the cost of retrofitting your house. It is a great showcase for alternative energy technologies, but I suspect you have used more resources in building it than you save in operating it.

  • Can't wait to get solar panels on my place! Keep up the great work Jack and Olivia!!

  • Great job....it should become a law for everyone to follow. Olivia and Jack make a private bill in the house, the people will be with you

  • Totally agree on that. Nothing's happenning, and I fear something big in just the next 5 years. We are going towards a slow cataclysm.

  • If she and Jack form a government they will make it economical for canadians to put these kind of things in place with sizable tax incentives. VOTE NDP FOR PROGRESS!

  • Love you guys and your an inspiration. It should be mandatory for new construction to adopt some (if not all) of these concepts. Does it not make sense to be as energy efficient as possible thereby slowing down the destruction of our planet? And, as Olivia mentioned, on certain days the solar panels even reverse the flow of energy and send it back into the grid. Free energy, well you still have to buy the solar panels, but you get my point.
