I will never be a piper like pipers who learned at 10 YOld BUT i will try to do my best To be A Piper !! & this Movie Give me Chills like no other & i really hope to going to Glasgow this August !!
Accompanied the Peel Regional Police Pipe Band to the Worlds in 2003. Had a great time with John Elliott and all the rest. Enjoying a pint and listening to the bands in the quad at Strathclyde University was heaven. Taking my mum (and lots of kleenex) to see the movie on Sunday.
Great to read all the nice comments. ON THE DAY will have its theatrical premiere in 51 theatres across Canada on Feb. 9, 2011 with an encore screening on Feb. 13, 2011. Check out the Cineplex and Empire Theatres website, my web site and Facebook for updated info.
a pretty challenge, but with such musicians, I believe it possible, not only a question of technic, but complicity and firendship, and after all, if they had not tried that would have been a pity, just for the fun and music, the world's are not a trial but a challenge for everybody and for the whole bands, and even if that need a lot of practicing, the passion leads you to your best and if you are the bests OK ! but however, the best is to participate

Your documentary was excellent. I bought a copy whilst at Winter Storm in Kansas City this past January. I've watched it about 10 times. My daughters even like watching it!
im on weepiper's side here...drumming is hard to learn yes...but there arent HOURS of tuning at EVERY contest and the fact that those hours of tuning mean nothing unless you play perfectly and have perfect breathing...not to mention the fact that playing the pipes is a LOT more tiring than drumming
Sc4wt......SERIOUSLY.... drumming music is way harder to learn than piping music.... pipes have a melody...much easier to remember than a beating eg paradidlle flam ratamacue 7stoke roll onto a triplet.....and so on and so forth. And i no this because Im a drummer and a piper..... ChrisZ70 is so right...
In piping you need to learn tunes just the same plus you have to learn to blow steadily we need to remeber beating too thats my point of view .I am a piper so I think.
warcrime 700. reid maxwell is right it doesnt matter if the pipers have won gold medals for solo playin the thing that matters is the pipers and drummers can all play as 1 as a band
Their drumming kept them from placing higher, no question. It's good to see they've beefed up their snare line with drummers such as Graham Kirkwood. It is MUCH harder to "play as one" for a snare drum corps. It's also much harder to learn and memorize new material than it is for pipers. All the pipers probably individually knew all the tunes of the MSR sets anyway, beforehand. So all they have to do is memorize the medley - which is much easier for them to do than for the drummers.
For Reid Maxwell to say, of the fact that most of the pipers have won gold medals, "doesn't mean anything," is an exaggeration or overstatement of the case. Surely the fact that most of them have won the gold medal means they're able to execute better, able to express better, able to keep their instrument sounding fantastic -- and as far as "playing as one" goes, it's not like these guys haven't played in pipe bands before. That they're so GOOD lets them minimize anything that could go wrong.
The band notes call it The Grey Old Wife of Raasay and P/M Roddy MacLeod did the arrangement. Another arrangement which sounds way different from the original tune is their slow air, Leaving Friday Harbor. ~ John McD.
So what happened to Spirit of Scotland THIS year (2009)? They weren't even listed among bands attempting to qualify, and I haven't read a single word about their status for '09. SoS web site says nothing; Roddy MacLeod's site says nothing; no bloggers have written anything. I gather from the fact that they've not been listed among entered Grade 1 bands that are trying to qualify, that they're not even on that list, that they did not even enter the World's contest this year. What happened??
It was an experiment that may never happen again. Pulling everyone together was an tremendous task and the band members each had to pay their own airfare, meals and accommodations. So many pipers are top soloists and I think really needed to get back to competing as such. But who knows, there has been talk, and we'll have to see what happens. At least the band will live on in my documentary, which is why I HAD to make it.
I hope to premier the film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival this June and then screen it at Piping Live in Glasgow during the week leading up to the Worlds in August. Maybe DVDs will come out after that. Please show your support by becoming a member of the ON THE DAY group on Facebook. And tell your friends. Thanks. -- John
It's called Clan MacCrae Society. Have you visited the film's website? We could really use your donation to help complete the film! Nothing is too small. Thanks.
Haha, I already said it, but I still can't believe how good this is. I only wish I had some cash on me to support it. Being a Uni. student isn't easy on the wallet.
But again, don't stop this, no matter what, this is a great thing.
I think it's excellent! A lot of old friends in the band including Roddy McLeod and Jim McGillivray. Can't wait to see the full doc. Will it be sold in DVD format?
Thanks. The plan is to premiere it at the Edinburgh Film Festival in June and then release it just before the World Championships in Glasgow in August. But it all depends on if and when we get the funds to finish it.
For sure. It will be available at some point all over the world via DVD or download. Prior to that, I'd like to see it make the rounds at film festivals, and have a pipe band at every screening! Then hopefully get some cable TV airings. Sign up at the On The Day website and we can keep you posted on when and where you can see it.
Thank you for this video of such talent. I'm a wonderful Piper's Mom in Ohio (former North Coast Pipe Band & Frasier) Much talent here, too. Wish we had been there this year; maybe next. Keep trying your best.

Yeah. You'd know this because you're clearly an accomplished piper as well as an accomplished drummer. Am I right?

You're an idiot. I'm not even going to bother to refute what you've just written here, because it's so idiotic it doesn't even deserve a refutation.

The vision of Rabbie Burns, the sheer talent of Beyonce. the beat of Willie Wallace.
The spirit of Scotland? - You bet!
And did you win ?- you'd won without even playing a note
