quiet yellow boy you go back to hell yes i was pissed off severely to see the horrific face of myra hindley in a video that is supposed to surmise britains identity in fact i wrote to the authorities in fucking outrage oh and DON'T FUCK WITH BRITAIN!!!
ok i have had it with you non-stop besmirching of our country is china or australia perfect no face it there is no perfect place that is why the concept of heaven and nirvana are endorsed(though probably not whole-heartedly) by most people for want of a perfect place
britain has it problems but at least we have freedom to say what we like that is what i care about
People are only critical of something when they expected better.
Eg. if I ran the 100m in 10s it would be great, but if Usain Bolt did 10s it wouldn't. It's relative.
Judging by your level of disgust for our ceremony piece you obviously hold the UK up in high esteem; as a wealthy, developed country capable of much more.
I take your respect for GB as a compliment and apologise for not being able to return the sentiment.
I would draw your attention to how many times you've posted comments here yourself.
Your hypocrisy is awesome.
Also, upon review of your comments, you've made a number of predjudiced statements and offensive claims, and you've brought race into it all a number of times. Conversely, my posts have been directed specifically towards your stupidity. The task of outlining it in full is daunting, but I like a challenge.
Fair point, I said English... it's a bad habit I picked up through years in China and Taiwan from Mandarin referring to the whole UK as 英國 (Ying Guo). By the way, that's how you admit to a fault. Try it sometime.
You're still not grasping the meaning of the word exclusively. Moving the goalposts won't help you. You're on record as saying you thought the listed items were exclusive to the UK. Wrong. Unlucky.
Also, you failed to answer one issue: which of those problems aren't also in China?
Halo88 made a list of things he called "British culture".
I asked him which points on the list were EXCLUSIVELY true of England. He claimed all of them. I invite you all to take a look. His list is on the next page.
You will find that he seemingly doesn't know what the word "exclusively" means as he is trying to claim that all of the list items are exclusive to the UK.
Gosh. A whole "nearly 6ft". You must be very proud. Well done.
The Dying Rooms was a documentary about Chinese orphanages. Sickening.
When I taught there, there certainly were more boys than girls. It does beg the question, "Where did all the little girls go?"
People didn't seem to like that question too much.
Meanwhile you sit and pontificate on the ills of the UK and get all riled about a ceremony or a game. Forgive me for not being able to take you seriously.
I am slightly surprised to see you still posting comments after the ones you made about me, which were entirely offensive and unfounded, have received 6 thumbs down. So, way to go on that one. Loser.
Bottom line: Britain had a massive role in the formation of modern-day Australia, and you CHOOSE to live there instead of China. End of discussion, mate. God save the Queen.
You're what we Brits call, "a twat", and you need to lose that enormous chip you have on your shoulder.
charmingmanc, it seems you have found another of your BNP racists in reecebrown to parrot your views. why cant you white trailer, i mean council house, trash accept there are other races in the world that arnt ayarean white? look its clear that your country is a pathetic excuse for a sovereign state and the only way sad losers like you living in their moms attic can get off is to write trash so i will make it short, go and kill yourselves by drinking some bleach and do your families a favour.
dude by all means slag of reecebrown, but leave my country alone. we don't all mirror the views of this guy, for example, London is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world. Seriously, lay off England, we aren't all racist fuck monkeys like reece here
I'll tell you what, Britian is a fuckin embarassment, only we could put up an image of a scumbag child killer during a collage to promote the 2012 Olympics, truly cringing, listen to Boris, what a fuckin toff nose twat, him and Gordon Brown haven't done a day's excercise in their lifes.
I loved China. But you can't love something without seeing it's flaws. What bugs me is endless arguments like this one where Chinese people get hyper-sensitive about criticism.
You've enough experience with the UK to know that we're the first to criticise ourselves. The coverage of the Hindley image is a good example.
I might remind you that our "sophisticated" propaganda machine didn't know that video contained this contraversial image until it was shown.
"wooden and shallow" - that's MY opinion. What difference does it make what the radio says? Think for yourself.
I didn't mention security being stepped up, so why are you JUSTIFYING it to me? My issue was that the international media wasn't able to report it freely.
Who's stupid?
P.S. War criminal is a serious allegation. I dislike Blair, but he isn't one just because you say he is. China and the US are on the Security Council. They don't think he is. Stop trying to score cheap points.
antonyrogers, it seems you must have been living under a council rock for quite some time because it is well known that bush and blairs illegal war in iraq has violated international law to which they would be held responsible if the ICC could act but it cannot because that is the way the system works. and as for "unable to report freely" comment goes its abundantly clear you have no idea what you are talking about. dont be a hypocrite like your great leader and put your own house in order 1st.
No.. I've spent 4 1/2 years living between HK, Nanjing, CN and Kaoshiung TW.
---
Iraq: 2003. ICC decision: 2005. Back up your ridiculous claim.
---
The international press were prevented from covering the attack in Xinjiang freely. There is no debate here.
---
I dislike Blair. Unlike the Chinese and Americans, we Brits are able to seperate ourselves from our flag and govt. It was an INDEPENDENT film featuring work by and INDEPENDENT artist.
Anthonyrogers, poverty, I have been to northern england and seen what poverty is too, and guess what? its just as miserable in the UK but at least the Chinese can say they have only had a market economy for the past 30 years, whats your excuse? as for reporting from xinjiang freely, when have we, the west, been able to report freely in iraq and afghanistan? 82% of the reporters killed in those areas since 2003 were INDEPENDENT reporters and not EMBEDDED! Thats some CENSORSHIP if you ask me.笨蛋
Is that supposed to be funny? Yeah, I've been up North, too. It's grim. But I didn't see semi-naked toddlers on the side of the road playing in an oily puddle. I saw that, and a lot more in China. This year.
It's a whole different level of poverty.
And why's it been only 30 years...? Oh yeah, I remember now. And you can hardly blame us for that one.
Unlike parts of Afghanistan (or Darfur) Xinjiang is hardly a war-zone, or inaccessible.
You like to draw comparisons where there are none.
anthonyr, i was replying to your comments on not being able to report freely and that is the principle i was comparing which makes the comparison fair. as for your anecdotal comment on poverty i have seen people in London who stand in the alleyways in Chinatown scooping out foul smelling food from bins to eat so where does that leave us? I think it would be fairer to use official figures and i have already quoted them to you and those figures are by the UN.
I have seen homeless in every country I've ever visited, included truly rich ones like Sweden and Norway. I have only seen such child poverty in China and 3rd world countries.
Yes, you used UN figures. But the UN gets those figures from the countries in question. So it's 14% in the UK according to our definition. If we applied China's definition, you might see a drop.
When they start opening containers in China and finding British refugees inside, I might have more faith in your figures.
well re the british refugees comment, when China has to rely on the british economy for its survival then i will have faith in yours and also the UN figures are NOT given by the country in question. its done using their own models and analysts so it shows how much you know. britain is worried it will become an irrelevance in the world which is why they are hanging on our coattails. China at least, has the courage to challenge its detractors and stand up for itself, unlike the UK.
And the factors prevented free reporting in places like Afghanistan and Darfur, are not the same as the factors preventing journalists entering Tibet earlier this year, or indeed getting to Xinjiang.
Journalists finding it difficult to reach parts of a war-zone is in principle entirely different from having a policeman with his hand up in your camera lens.
Comparing wanton state censorship with the dangerous conditions faced by journalists in some of these places is verging on insulting.
anhonyr, your comment on state censorship means you are either an idiot or nicely indoctrinated by state propaganda. its abundantly clear that the UK and US are both sanitizing and heavily censoring news from iraq and afghanistan because of the constant atrocities committed by "Our Boys". talking of insulting, your ignorance is just that if this is what you believe. innocents and being killed in an illegal war in their thousands and you believe the war criminals and war mongers? what a joke!
I read about the arrest of John Ray on Al Jazeera. I read BBC, Xin Hua and Pravda too. Pravda also covered the story. Xin Hua didn't.
I'll be the first to agree that some UK papers do spout crap like the "our boys" stuff you mentioned. But there's also the counterweight of the Independent or the FT. Where's the counterweight to Xin Hua?
We all saw the Chinese cops attempting to prohibit filming. I hate to see that from any cops, ours included.
if you have been to china and i assume you can read Chinese then it could not possibly have escaped your attention that outside of china daily and wen wui pao that there are many mainstream papers throughout china that openly criticise the government over things such as official corruption and lampooning the of leaders. i have worked there for the past 10 years and unlike what the western media report about the chinese knowing nothing of ie the torch protests, they see it just like we do.
i choose to see our western news for what it is,a very sophisticated form of propaganda compared to the hamfisted efforts of the chinese, case in hand, how most of the uk and us media organisations were found to have been conduits for gov propaganda to support their illegal war. another case: Pte Jessica Ryan's rescue from evil iraqi doctors, or the Brit marines who were "abducted" by iran and who sold their stories about lost ipods etc but no guantanamo treatment as reported earlier.
Meanwhile, China deported people for unfurling a banner. For showing an opinion.
It's out of hope that these things can improve that I complain and criticise. It's out of the same hope that I protested the invasion of Iraq (and didn't get into any trouble doing so).
A robust country has nothing to fear from a slogan or placard.
Come and protest Iraq in 2012.... and you will see the difference.
P.S. UN stats are based on National Accounts. The source for China poverty is the CCP. Oh dear.
"the source for China poverty is the CCP"?? well its clear your lack of understanding of the history of China. its because of the CCP that the Chinese economy has its current dominant position in the world, its the CCP who lifted hundreds of millions out of abject poverty in just 30 years which is commendable. the CCP has given the chinese unrivalled economic progress, social stability and global standing which is what every government in the world dreams of giving its people.
The "source" for the DATA the UN uses. Read carefully.
And it was the CCP that was behind the cultural revolution and reforms that plunged you into poverty in the first place, too.
Dominant. Behind Japan and the US. And, of course, the EU if you count it. Supply is governed by demand. Not vice versa. I wouldn't count my chickens while my country's GDP is only a few thousand USD per head.
china's economic progress has obviously spooked quite a few people in high places and you can see this from observing the xenophobic tone from western governments when they talk china whether its covering the olympics or talking politics. if the people in the west are so concerned for hr in china then why dont you get your gov to boycott chinese goods? economically embargo china then i will commend your countries for your actions. hr is just a weapon the west uses against its enemies.
I wouldn't want to boycott products the average Chinese people produce as my quarrel is not with them. I'm happy to see 1 in 5 finally being allowed to thrive. Like I say, I have love for China.
I like your progress. Nobody likes poor neighbours. You do better - we all do better.
I will stand with you in condemnation of my country's wrongs. You won't do the same for me and condemn China's.
i can see there are things that are wrong with China and i condemn them too but i write my replies because there is a distinct absence of the concept of universality when it comes to china. what china does is wrong but when we do the same its right? NO. i dont accept that. if we can say with as objective a mind as we can that we will exercise fairness in our criticism then yes i will freely admit that there are many faults with China but until then i will continue to speak for the underdog.
I agree completely with you on needing universality.
I'm signing off now, but you referred a number of times to Guantanamo. I wanted to say: I seem to remember the UK petitioned for, and secured, the release of all our nationals from Guantanamo. Our govt. has condemned Gitmo as "an affront to democracy". Was this h.r. being used as a weapon against the USA?
I condemn Guantanamo with you. As I am sure you condemn, say, Chen Guangcheng's imprisonment with me.
i agree with your comments on the uk and gitmo but add that it was more public consternation that actioned it rather than a government initiative. and of course i agree that detention of political dissidents must be condemned whereever they occur. glad we could agree on some common ground. regards.
antonyr, yeah i enjoyed the debate too, just hope in the future we can try to be as objective as possible but sometimes its quite difficult if you see a lot of bias. i cant stand the way media orgs subtly word their contempt etc for china when they turn a blind eye to the US and UK which is why i speak out. anyway all the best to you too and impressed with the Chinese typing.
well in the UK 63 year old people get arrested under the terrorism act for shouting the word "rubbish", and fathers for justice also get arrested and prosecuted for "unfurling a banner". yes i agree, a robust country should have nothing to fear from a slogan/placard which makes me wonder about why the makers of "on the verge" documentary were the subjects of a concerted police harassment operation involving a number of police forces in the UK for just trying to show a documentary at local pubs?
Yes, the 63 year old... a regrettable incident. One I stand side by side with you on and condemn. He was later released... how many languish in Chinese jails for as much?
If you agree about having nothing to fear.. why were those people deported? Why did the police try to prohibit filming?
let me tell you a little bit about western versions of free media although you seem to have skipped over the many journalists killed in iraq and afghanistan that i mentioned, i have journalist friends in the uk who have been filmed and photographed by the metropolitan police FIT units and have been assaulted by them on numerous occasions which you can verify by going to your NUJ. when we do something we call it "regrettable" but when designated enemies do the same its instantly demonised!
talking of deporting people and other human rights violations, i have yet to read a news report about the CCP abducting its own nationals on the orders of a foreign government to a third country for torture and illegal detainment. you mentioned our ability to demonstrate freely but yet the UK is the most monitored nation in the world, when east germany did this they were saying the same thing as your gov ie national security yet we dismissed those claims and now we are selling the same BS!
languishing in jail? yes there are quite a number of prisoners in guantanamo who are doing just that and the laughable thing is that the uk is helping put their own citizens there! so much for human rights. lets face it, we in the west are no more for human rights than those in totalitarian countries.
The Olympics is about the spirit of sport, not CCP showpieces. In that context, what's shameful is a Chinese crowd that would boo and hiss when things didn't go their way. As is blowing over £22bn when China's GDP is below the Ukraine's (per capita, of course). And having to "educate" the citizens of Beijing to stop spitting. That was shameful.
But that's just my opinion, and you are entitled to yours.
antonyrogers, lets have a look at your comments, where were the "CCP showpieces"? pls explain, where did you see the booing and hissing? and as for china's GDP maybe you should check and see that it was U$7Trillion whereas the UK's was U$2Tril, the unemployment rate of China for 2007 was 4% whereas the UK's was 5.4% and those living below the poverty line is 8% in China but a commendable 14% in the UK! WOW, all that pillaging and colonising by your ancestors and now look at you!
The ceremonies were the showpeices I referred to. It was like watching a sweet 16 with the host desperate for everyone to like her. Sad.
I stated quite clearly it was "per capita" GDP. We are only 60mn people. Based on that.. come back to me when China's nearer 50tn, and then I may take you seriously.
Unemployment will peak & trough in a free market economy. Your point?
Poverty - as rated by the Chinese govt. There's no standard. I've been there. I've seen Chinese poverty. Not good.
tunablock, stop arguing with this guy antonyogers, its clear he is ignorant. The opening and closing ceremonies were universally applauded and yet he talks about them being CCP showpieces? after all the talk by UK of not politicising the games and here they go! unemployment will peak and trough in a free market?? well thats insightful! China is the worlds 3 largest economy and inside 20 years its economy will overtake the US so what are you talking about? Britain is insignificant on all levels.
re the boo and hissing, i dont see that ever happening in the UK, i mean no way! we dont do that, oh hold on let me see, everytime a foreign boxer comes to the UK for a match they are subject to the most disgusting demo of vile hatred, oh what about our rising support for those great people the BNP? yes a beacon of fair play light is the british crowds if you ever saw one!
The Chinese games were so wooden and shallow. Everything had to seem perfect: there were protests and terrorist attacks, but they arrested some journalists and lit some fireworks and everyone ignored the trouble. The British have a long history of free speech, so we're going to get detractors and nay-sayers, whatever happens. I'm proud they're free to say what they will.
Also, unlike the Chinese, we face up to our faults. To me, that's what the Hindley image meant in the context of the film.
antonyrogers, did you watch the olympics on PlanetSourGrapes? i know its hard for you descendants of murdering colonisers to accept that your country is going down the toilet but dont show your ignorance publicly! your dribble about free speech is a bit marred by the fact that the UK is the most monitored nation on earth and saying the words "rubbish" can get you arrested under the terrorism act even if you are an OAP! your comment about hindley is beyond ignorance, get an education you inbred.
well charmingmanc, you have a good grasp of the facts but even you cannot deny that your country is our bitch! everytime we say something we simply look at your government and your leaders parrot everything we say NO MATTER WHAT! :)
charmingmanc, its clear you dont have any idea about international politics. israel does what WE say and not the other way around which incidentally is exactly what your country does except you dont have the balls to even question us. also what happened in 2001 allowed us to do what we want in the world and what a great way to go about it than to have some lackey parrot our views on your leaders own accord to boot! its clear, your nation has no dignity and or self respect. you do as WE tell you.
Allow me to unburden you with the truth: since the Six-Day War in 1967, the centrepiece of US Middle Eastern policy has been its relationship with Israel. Washington has provided Israel with a level of support dwarfing that given to any other state. It has been the largest annual recipient of direct economic and military assistance since 1976, and is the largest recipient in total since World War Two, to the tune of well over $140 billion (in 2004 dollars).
Israel receives about $3 billion in direct assistance from the US each year, roughly one-fifth of the foreign aid budget, and worth about $500 a year for every Israeli. This has always been the case since your country was defeated by an army of 5ft peasants wielding broomsticks (Vietnam).
charmingmanc, all these facts and yet your government is willing still to be an obediant dog, i mean lackey, to us? how does that make you feel? i mean that must have serious effects on your national pride right? what about self esteem? zero right? oh well, get on your knees slaves and dont dare look up unless its to kiss our ass.
thischarmingmanc, tell us this, how does it feel to be the subservient lacky of our great nation? i mean, sure the Chinese are bad but at least they have the dignity to stand up and strike out on their own. your leaders wont dare even question our violations of international law and precedent. that surely must take the GREAT out of GREAT Britain? i mean not even the balls to ACT like a sovereign state! thats embarassing, you may as well annexe yourselves to us! :)
Please delete another IQ point. The mention of 'our great nation' shows the folly of your view. Less than 20 Saudi Arabians took the 'great' from the US when the US reaped its reward via 2 planes on September 11. Whoomph went Flight 175, kerblam went Flight 11. Down tumbled the twin towers in a country caught with its pants around its ankles.
To the world, George Bush sure is the epitomy of US 'intelligence'!
Hey antonyrogers, pls tell us how do you British "face up to your faults"? I am curious, did Blair face up to the fact he is a lying war criminal? will you face up to the fact that the 8 minute display at the olympics was plain embarassing? Judging by the radio shows in the UK it was obvious it was! "wooden and shallow" WOW if that aint sourgrapes I dont know what is. the fact that you mentioned the terrorist attacks JUSTIFIES the Chinese need to step up security, LOL you are so stupid its easy!
Judge it in 2012. As for Wembley, we'll have to rough it in a stadium that has the second largest capacity in Europe (after Camp Nou), and the largest in the world with every seat under cover. Please deduct another IQ point, Mr O Tool!
Is it true the Ethiopians are organising aid drops for Ireland's impoverished Olympic team? Well done!
Christ what a complete cock what was the London promotion team up to? (could be the work of a disgruntled London promo employee) anyway you look at it, its a major cock up
xbextahx, so you dont like "offensive comments"? therefore they should be silenced eh? are you a dictator or just a sad person with some leftover colonialism mentality left inside of you? lets face it, we, the brits, have compared the beijing olympics with the nazi olympics so why are you guys so hacked off with having hindley as the poster girl for 2012? i say its poetic justice, we slagged off the chinese so much we did it to ourselves in the end.
A rather hypocritical arguement Bigdog; if someone has the right to make offensive comments, then those offended have the right to express their offense. To then accuse the offended of trying to silence others is a bit rich.
When Chinese people took offense at comments by British people, we didn't accuse them of censorship or dictatorial colonist mentality: their government displays such traits often enough, we don't need to falsely accuse the people of the same.
eregeras, i suppose in the UK or US there is no such thing as censorship or corruption right? yesterday outside the convention center where Obama was there was a peaceful demo and the police penned in hundreds of protestors then fired tear gas at them without warning and arrested 91 of them and yet our media did not mention this at all yet when an ITN reporter was detained in Beijing in a police van for half an hour it was on the main bulletin? what a load of hypocritical BS the west talks.
I read it in the Guardian and Torygraph, where's that media bias when we need it? Check their websites.
You don't appear to know what censorship is, the protests were not wholly peaceful. I never claimed the west or the UK in particular was ideal in regards to bias and censorship and I readily acknowledge these facts. Many of the Chinese nationalists I've sparred with fail repeatedly to acknowledge their own national news service is at least just as appalling.
eregeras, i agree with Bigdogs views, we dont like it when we get some of the treatment we are so fond of handing out to others. POETIC JUSTICE! we so like to condemn people when they use the holocaust for their political goals but when they find it convenient they dredge it out to strike at designated enemies. ha, well go and sulk in private and stop whining.
You didn't even bother reading my point. My objection to Bigdog's comments was the implication that expressing offense is equal to censorship. I pointed out that the right to offend and the right to be offended were on an equal level; they are both freedom of speech. Accusing someone of censorship for exercising one of them is hypocritical.
I haven't quite worked out what the objection to Hindley's face making an appearence is, but no one complained about China using Chairman Mao.
I see Ireland reinforced its international status as the world's perennial underachievers: 63rd in the Olympic medal haul, behind such lumniaries as Iran, Uzbekistan, Mongolia and Ethiopia. Well done!
This says enough about London of being the host for the next Olympics and even their mayor looks like shit. Walking with open coat, hands in his pocket and being 'proud' to host the Olympics while he is against it. Than this 'presentation' was like a Mr. Bean comedy show.
also.
inbred white girl? Im a boy. clearly you're stupid enough to believe that reece is a girls name?
oh, and if you want to bring racism into it.
Id rather be white then some dumpy little chink. Try learning to pronounce your Ls a bit. im sick of hearing "HERROOOOOO!!"

You claim the severity of the things on your list are exclusive to the UK.
There are several places for each that are far worse, so you're wrong. Start by admitting that one first.
China (like everywhere) has yobs/chavs; that could be your second...

Also, I like the way you don't respond about serious issues like the state of China's orphanages. Your silence on the matter speaks volumes.

You've enough experience with the UK to know that we're the first to criticise ourselves. The coverage of the Hindley image is a good example.
I might remind you that our "sophisticated" propaganda machine didn't know that video contained this contraversial image until it was shown.
antonyrogers 3 years ago 2
"wooden and shallow" - that's MY opinion. What difference does it make what the radio says? Think for yourself.
I didn't mention security being stepped up, so why are you JUSTIFYING it to me? My issue was that the international media wasn't able to report it freely.
Who's stupid?
P.S. War criminal is a serious allegation. I dislike Blair, but he isn't one just because you say he is. China and the US are on the Security Council. They don't think he is. Stop trying to score cheap points.
antonyrogers 3 years ago
antonyrogers, it seems you must have been living under a council rock for quite some time because it is well known that bush and blairs illegal war in iraq has violated international law to which they would be held responsible if the ICC could act but it cannot because that is the way the system works. and as for "unable to report freely" comment goes its abundantly clear you have no idea what you are talking about. dont be a hypocrite like your great leader and put your own house in order 1st.
tunablock 3 years ago
Blair's not our leader. Do you read the news?

Anthonyrogers, poverty, I have been to northern england and seen what poverty is too, and guess what? its just as miserable in the UK but at least the Chinese can say they have only had a market economy for the past 30 years, whats your excuse? as for reporting from xinjiang freely, when have we, the west, been able to report freely in iraq and afghanistan? 82% of the reporters killed in those areas since 2003 were INDEPENDENT reporters and not EMBEDDED! Thats some CENSORSHIP if you ask me.笨蛋
bigdog88 3 years ago
Is that supposed to be funny? Yeah, I've been up North, too. It's grim. But I didn't see semi-naked toddlers on the side of the road playing in an oily puddle. I saw that, and a lot more in China. This year.
It's a whole different level of poverty.
And why's it been only 30 years...? Oh yeah, I remember now. And you can hardly blame us for that one.
Unlike parts of Afghanistan (or Darfur) Xinjiang is hardly a war-zone, or inaccessible.
You like to draw comparisons where there are none.
antonyrogers 3 years ago 2
anthonyr, i was replying to your comments on not being able to report freely and that is the principle i was comparing which makes the comparison fair. as for your anecdotal comment on poverty i have seen people in London who stand in the alleyways in Chinatown scooping out foul smelling food from bins to eat so where does that leave us? I think it would be fairer to use official figures and i have already quoted them to you and those figures are by the UN.
bigdog88 3 years ago
I have seen homeless in every country I've ever visited, included truly rich ones like Sweden and Norway. I have only seen such child poverty in China and 3rd world countries.
Yes, you used UN figures. But the UN gets those figures from the countries in question. So it's 14% in the UK according to our definition. If we applied China's definition, you might see a drop.
When they start opening containers in China and finding British refugees inside, I might have more faith in your figures.
antonyrogers 3 years ago
well re the british refugees comment, when China has to rely on the british economy for its survival then i will have faith in yours and also the UN figures are NOT given by the country in question. its done using their own models and analysts so it shows how much you know. britain is worried it will become an irrelevance in the world which is why they are hanging on our coattails. China at least, has the courage to challenge its detractors and stand up for itself, unlike the UK.
bigdog88 3 years ago
And the factors prevented free reporting in places like Afghanistan and Darfur, are not the same as the factors preventing journalists entering Tibet earlier this year, or indeed getting to Xinjiang.
Journalists finding it difficult to reach parts of a war-zone is in principle entirely different from having a policeman with his hand up in your camera lens.
Comparing wanton state censorship with the dangerous conditions faced by journalists in some of these places is verging on insulting.
antonyrogers 3 years ago
anhonyr, your comment on state censorship means you are either an idiot or nicely indoctrinated by state propaganda. its abundantly clear that the UK and US are both sanitizing and heavily censoring news from iraq and afghanistan because of the constant atrocities committed by "Our Boys". talking of insulting, your ignorance is just that if this is what you believe. innocents and being killed in an illegal war in their thousands and you believe the war criminals and war mongers? what a joke!
bigdog88 3 years ago
I read about the arrest of John Ray on Al Jazeera. I read BBC, Xin Hua and Pravda too. Pravda also covered the story. Xin Hua didn't.
I'll be the first to agree that some UK papers do spout crap like the "our boys" stuff you mentioned. But there's also the counterweight of the Independent or the FT. Where's the counterweight to Xin Hua?
We all saw the Chinese cops attempting to prohibit filming. I hate to see that from any cops, ours included.
antonyrogers 3 years ago
if you have been to china and i assume you can read Chinese then it could not possibly have escaped your attention that outside of china daily and wen wui pao that there are many mainstream papers throughout china that openly criticise the government over things such as official corruption and lampooning the of leaders. i have worked there for the past 10 years and unlike what the western media report about the chinese knowing nothing of ie the torch protests, they see it just like we do.
bigdog88 3 years ago
i choose to see our western news for what it is,a very sophisticated form of propaganda compared to the hamfisted efforts of the chinese, case in hand, how most of the uk and us media organisations were found to have been conduits for gov propaganda to support their illegal war. another case: Pte Jessica Ryan's rescue from evil iraqi doctors, or the Brit marines who were "abducted" by iran and who sold their stories about lost ipods etc but no guantanamo treatment as reported earlier.
bigdog88 3 years ago
Meanwhile, China deported people for unfurling a banner. For showing an opinion.
It's out of hope that these things can improve that I complain and criticise. It's out of the same hope that I protested the invasion of Iraq (and didn't get into any trouble doing so).
A robust country has nothing to fear from a slogan or placard.
Come and protest Iraq in 2012.... and you will see the difference.
P.S. UN stats are based on National Accounts. The source for China poverty is the CCP. Oh dear.
antonyrogers 3 years ago 2
"the source for China poverty is the CCP"?? well its clear your lack of understanding of the history of China. its because of the CCP that the Chinese economy has its current dominant position in the world, its the CCP who lifted hundreds of millions out of abject poverty in just 30 years which is commendable. the CCP has given the chinese unrivalled economic progress, social stability and global standing which is what every government in the world dreams of giving its people.
bigdog88 3 years ago
The "source" for the DATA the UN uses. Read carefully.
And it was the CCP that was behind the cultural revolution and reforms that plunged you into poverty in the first place, too.
Dominant. Behind Japan and the US. And, of course, the EU if you count it. Supply is governed by demand. Not vice versa. I wouldn't count my chickens while my country's GDP is only a few thousand USD per head.
antonyrogers 3 years ago
china's economic progress has obviously spooked quite a few people in high places and you can see this from observing the xenophobic tone from western governments when they talk china whether its covering the olympics or talking politics. if the people in the west are so concerned for hr in china then why dont you get your gov to boycott chinese goods? economically embargo china then i will commend your countries for your actions. hr is just a weapon the west uses against its enemies.
bigdog88 3 years ago
I wouldn't want to boycott products the average Chinese people produce as my quarrel is not with them. I'm happy to see 1 in 5 finally being allowed to thrive. Like I say, I have love for China.
I like your progress. Nobody likes poor neighbours. You do better - we all do better.
I will stand with you in condemnation of my country's wrongs. You won't do the same for me and condemn China's.
Why?
antonyrogers 3 years ago 2
i can see there are things that are wrong with China and i condemn them too but i write my replies because there is a distinct absence of the concept of universality when it comes to china. what china does is wrong but when we do the same its right? NO. i dont accept that. if we can say with as objective a mind as we can that we will exercise fairness in our criticism then yes i will freely admit that there are many faults with China but until then i will continue to speak for the underdog.
bigdog88 3 years ago
Fair comment(s).
Cheers for now.
antonyrogers 3 years ago 4
i agree with your comments on the uk and gitmo but add that it was more public consternation that actioned it rather than a government initiative. and of course i agree that detention of political dissidents must be condemned whereever they occur. glad we could agree on some common ground. regards.
bigdog88 3 years ago 4
Yes, me too bigdog.
I enjoyed the debate. It's nice to be challenged.
Kindest regards to you, too. All the best mate.
antonyrogers 3 years ago
antonyr, yeah i enjoyed the debate too, just hope in the future we can try to be as objective as possible but sometimes its quite difficult if you see a lot of bias. i cant stand the way media orgs subtly word their contempt etc for china when they turn a blind eye to the US and UK which is why i speak out. anyway all the best to you too and impressed with the Chinese typing.
bigdog88 3 years ago 3
well in the UK 63 year old people get arrested under the terrorism act for shouting the word "rubbish", and fathers for justice also get arrested and prosecuted for "unfurling a banner". yes i agree, a robust country should have nothing to fear from a slogan/placard which makes me wonder about why the makers of "on the verge" documentary were the subjects of a concerted police harassment operation involving a number of police forces in the UK for just trying to show a documentary at local pubs?
bigdog88 3 years ago
Yes, the 63 year old... a regrettable incident. One I stand side by side with you on and condemn. He was later released... how many languish in Chinese jails for as much?
If you agree about having nothing to fear.. why were those people deported? Why did the police try to prohibit filming?
antonyrogers 3 years ago
let me tell you a little bit about western versions of free media although you seem to have skipped over the many journalists killed in iraq and afghanistan that i mentioned, i have journalist friends in the uk who have been filmed and photographed by the metropolitan police FIT units and have been assaulted by them on numerous occasions which you can verify by going to your NUJ. when we do something we call it "regrettable" but when designated enemies do the same its instantly demonised!
bigdog88 3 years ago
talking of deporting people and other human rights violations, i have yet to read a news report about the CCP abducting its own nationals on the orders of a foreign government to a third country for torture and illegal detainment. you mentioned our ability to demonstrate freely but yet the UK is the most monitored nation in the world, when east germany did this they were saying the same thing as your gov ie national security yet we dismissed those claims and now we are selling the same BS!
bigdog88 3 years ago
Again, I stand with you and condemn any such action. It's absolutely deplorable.
I will stand with you in condemnation of my country's wrongs. You won't do the same for me and condemn China's.
Why?
antonyrogers 3 years ago 2
languishing in jail? yes there are quite a number of prisoners in guantanamo who are doing just that and the laughable thing is that the uk is helping put their own citizens there! so much for human rights. lets face it, we in the west are no more for human rights than those in totalitarian countries.
bigdog88 3 years ago
The Olympics is about the spirit of sport, not CCP showpieces. In that context, what's shameful is a Chinese crowd that would boo and hiss when things didn't go their way. As is blowing over £22bn when China's GDP is below the Ukraine's (per capita, of course). And having to "educate" the citizens of Beijing to stop spitting. That was shameful.
But that's just my opinion, and you are entitled to yours.
antonyrogers 3 years ago
antonyrogers, lets have a look at your comments, where were the "CCP showpieces"? pls explain, where did you see the booing and hissing? and as for china's GDP maybe you should check and see that it was U$7Trillion whereas the UK's was U$2Tril, the unemployment rate of China for 2007 was 4% whereas the UK's was 5.4% and those living below the poverty line is 8% in China but a commendable 14% in the UK! WOW, all that pillaging and colonising by your ancestors and now look at you!
tunablock 3 years ago
The ceremonies were the showpeices I referred to. It was like watching a sweet 16 with the host desperate for everyone to like her. Sad.
I stated quite clearly it was "per capita" GDP. We are only 60mn people. Based on that.. come back to me when China's nearer 50tn, and then I may take you seriously.
Unemployment will peak & trough in a free market economy. Your point?
Poverty - as rated by the Chinese govt. There's no standard. I've been there. I've seen Chinese poverty. Not good.
antonyrogers 3 years ago
tunablock, stop arguing with this guy antonyogers, its clear he is ignorant. Britain is insignificant on all levels.
bigdog88 3 years ago
re the boo and hissing, i dont see that ever happening in the UK, i mean no way! we dont do that, oh hold on let me see, everytime a foreign boxer comes to the UK for a match they are subject to the most disgusting demo of vile hatred, oh what about our rising support for those great people the BNP? yes a beacon of fair play light is the british crowds if you ever saw one!
tunablock 3 years ago
The Chinese games were so wooden and shallow. Everything had to seem perfect: there were protests and terrorist attacks, but they arrested some journalists and lit some fireworks and everyone ignored the trouble. The British have a long history of free speech, so we're going to get detractors and nay-sayers, whatever happens. I'm proud they're free to say what they will.
Also, unlike the Chinese, we face up to our faults. To me, that's what the Hindley image meant in the context of the film.
antonyrogers 3 years ago
antonyrogers, did you watch the olympics on PlanetSourGrapes? i know its hard for you descendants of murdering colonisers to accept that your country is going down the toilet but dont show your ignorance publicly! your dribble about free speech is a bit marred by the fact that the UK is the most monitored nation on earth and saying the words "rubbish" can get you arrested under the terrorism act even if you are an OAP! your comment about hindley is beyond ignorance, get an education you inbred.
tunablock 3 years ago
"murdering colonisers". Ah, the irony. America: land of Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib, rendition flights, warmongers and trailer trash.
Keep it :)

well charmingmanc, you have a good grasp of the facts but even you cannot deny that your country is our bitch! everytime we say something we simply look at your government and your leaders parrot everything we say NO MATTER WHAT! :)
tunablock 3 years ago
3 messages, and you neglect to mention how the US dances to the tune of Israel. The US is the sorry dancing bear of the Middle East.
Th1sCharmingManc 3 years ago
charmingmanc, its clear you dont have any idea about international politics. israel does what WE say and not the other way around which incidentally is exactly what your country does except you dont have the balls to even question us. also what happened in 2001 allowed us to do what we want in the world and what a great way to go about it than to have some lackey parrot our views on your leaders own accord to boot! its clear, your nation has no dignity and or self respect. you do as WE tell you.
tunablock 3 years ago
Allow me to unburden you with the truth: since the Six-Day War in 1967, the centrepiece of US Middle Eastern policy has been its relationship with Israel. Washington has provided Israel with a level of support dwarfing that given to any other state. It has been the largest annual recipient of direct economic and military assistance since 1976, and is the largest recipient in total since World War Two, to the tune of well over $140 billion (in 2004 dollars).
Th1sCharmingManc 3 years ago
Israel receives about $3 billion in direct assistance from the US each year, roughly one-fifth of the foreign aid budget, and worth about $500 a year for every Israeli. This has always been the case since your country was defeated by an army of 5ft peasants wielding broomsticks (Vietnam).
They also took the 'great' from your country!
Th1sCharmingManc 3 years ago
charmingmanc, all these facts and yet your government is willing still to be an obediant dog, i mean lackey, to us? how does that make you feel? i mean that must have serious effects on your national pride right? what about self esteem? zero right? oh well, get on your knees slaves and dont dare look up unless its to kiss our ass.
tunablock 3 years ago
Like the victorious 5ft broom-wielding peasants in Vietnam, I tend to regard Americans as: There but for the grace of God go I :)
Keep sending your money and boys to the Middle East. Dance, dancing bear...!
Th1sCharmingManc 3 years ago
thischarmingmanc, tell us this, how does it feel to be the subservient lacky of our great nation? i mean, sure the Chinese are bad but at least they have the dignity to stand up and strike out on their own. your leaders wont dare even question our violations of international law and precedent. that surely must take the GREAT out of GREAT Britain? i mean not even the balls to ACT like a sovereign state! thats embarassing, you may as well annexe yourselves to us! :)
tunablock 3 years ago
Please delete another IQ point. The mention of 'our great nation' shows the folly of your view. Less than 20 Saudi Arabians took the 'great' from the US when the US reaped its reward via 2 planes on September 11. Whoomph went Flight 175, kerblam went Flight 11. Down tumbled the twin towers in a country caught with its pants around its ankles.
To the world, George Bush sure is the epitomy of US 'intelligence'!

I am proud to be an American, can you say that about being a Brit? I seriously doubt it.

"wooden and shallow" WOW if that aint sourgrapes I dont know what is. the fact that you mentioned the terrorist attacks JUSTIFIES the Chinese need to step up security, LOL you are so stupid its easy!

bigdog88 3 years ago
xbextahx, so you dont like "offensive comments"? therefore they should be silenced eh? are you a dictator or just a sad person with some leftover colonialism mentality left inside of you? lets face it, we, the brits, have compared the beijing olympics with the nazi olympics so why are you guys so hacked off with having hindley as the poster girl for 2012? i say its poetic justice, we slagged off the chinese so much we did it to ourselves in the end.
bigdog88 3 years ago
A rather hypocritical arguement Bigdog; if someone has the right to make offensive comments, then those offended have the right to express their offense. To then accuse the offended of trying to silence others is a bit rich.
When Chinese people took offense at comments by British people, we didn't accuse them of censorship or dictatorial colonist mentality: their government displays such traits often enough, we don't need to falsely accuse the people of the same.
Eregeras 3 years ago
eregeras, i suppose in the UK or US there is no such thing as censorship or corruption right? yesterday outside the convention center where Obama was there was a peaceful demo and the police penned in hundreds of protestors then fired tear gas at them without warning and arrested 91 of them and yet our media did not mention this at all yet when an ITN reporter was detained in Beijing in a police van for half an hour it was on the main bulletin? what a load of hypocritical BS the west talks.
tunablock 3 years ago
I read it in the Guardian and Torygraph, where's that media bias when we need it? Check their websites.
You don't appear to know what censorship is, the protests were not wholly peaceful. I never claimed the west or the UK in particular was ideal in regards to bias and censorship and I readily acknowledge these facts. Many of the Chinese nationalists I've sparred with fail repeatedly to acknowledge their own national news service is at least just as appalling.
Eregeras 3 years ago
eregeras, i agree with Bigdogs views, we dont like it when we get some of the treatment we are so fond of handing out to others. POETIC JUSTICE! we so like to condemn people when they use the holocaust for their political goals but when they find it convenient they dredge it out to strike at designated enemies. ha, well go and sulk in private and stop whining.
tunablock 3 years ago
You didn't even bother reading my point. My objection to Bigdog's comments was the implication that expressing offense is equal to censorship. I pointed out that the right to offend and the right to be offended were on an equal level; they are both freedom of speech. Accusing someone of censorship for exercising one of them is hypocritical.
I haven't quite worked out what the objection to Hindley's face making an appearence is, but no one complained about China using Chairman Mao.
Eregeras 3 years ago
I see Ireland reinforced its international status as the world's perennial underachievers: 63rd in the Olympic medal haul, behind such lumniaries as Iran, Uzbekistan, Mongolia and Ethiopia. Well done!
Th1sCharmingManc 3 years ago
This says enough about London of being the host for the next Olympics and even their mayor looks like shit. Walking with open coat, hands in his pocket and being 'proud' to host the Olympics while he is against it. Than this 'presentation' was like a Mr. Bean comedy show.
