Hi i'm not sure if you got your answer to "where are the words"?Bottom Right of the the video you can see six items you can click on the left button has (CC) on it, just click on it and you can bring the lyrics on screen . Hope this helps
GILBERT FANS - Anyone wishing to send a personal message to CLAIR HERSELF please see the video opposite - `The sweetest Clair video ever ! ` - SHE WILL SEE IT !
gilbert a musician that sings from the heart and plays his heart strings through his piano i never heard since the beatles such great orchestrations a true musician a true writer of songs
@lezsbar I went to the Aylesbury concert too! Amazing energy for a 63 year old man. He must have sung for 2 hours in total, & looked & sounded exactly as he did 35 years ago. Matrimony had em on their feet! Great stuff.
@BrettELothrop You wouldn't have thought they would mind about his name dropping would you, considering this song is the best advertisement they will ever get.
I was a teenager when when this song hit the charts and I remember liking it but not telling my mates (cos it wasn't cool to be into Gilbert) although his tank tops (wooley vest) and flat cap became fashionable.I listen to his music so much now and appreciate what a talented musician and songwriter he is. PURE GENIUS
Genius. Whenever i get down over the complete overkill of the talentless machine that is x factor i simply listen to this to reassure myself that real music still has a future.
I know i'm going to sound cliché but I must say it. Such a simple, gentle, wonderful unpretentious modest man who has more talent, feeling and soul in the tip of one finger than a thousand gagas and justins combined.
Thoughtful lyrics, brilliant melody, Gilbert has a way of dealing with difficult subject matter in his own style...it works, that's the point. Well done to him, one of the greatest songwriters of all time.
Can somebody PLEASE explain these beautifully sounding lyrics to me. I have followed and understood lyrics from all over the world, but I fail on this one. What is Gilbert talking about? I hear what he says but I can't put it together. Any help is appreciated and will be thanked!
I'm back listening to this again. If I'm feeling down, I listen to this again. Maybe just to remind myself, "nothing wilder than youth". Perhaps, like a lot of comments on here, just to take myself back to hearing this for the first time on Radio 2 the first time round. Whatever, it still takes me back, and cheers me up! Thank you Gilbert.
Well, I first heard this on the radio as a young child....pivotal, hear it, and takes me back to my parents house, smells..sounds just a lovely childhood.x
Listened to ken Bruce show on demand, how glad am i. I am with Tony from Twekesbury "wonderful" I could have been back in the kitchen when I was a child and hear my mum sing along. And today what was I doing, singing along to everyword whilst making my children listen to it. Some thing in life are amazing and Gilbert O'Sullivan is one. Amazing lyrics thankyou Ray.
Brilliant - thanks for sharing this. Listened to him on the Ken Bruce show today, which sent me scurrying to iTunes and Amazon to download a load of songs, but had the same problem as the GroovyGrandma: they are only available as part of compilation albums with other artists (or not at all!)
@LobusWobbles I'm fairly certain that he's releasing a compilation album of his greatest hits in about 6 months or so; I'll be watching out it for it, for sure!
I was privileged to get the final name check for Gilbert's session on Ken Bruce's R2 Show this morning; Ken read out "Tony from Tewkesbury said..." Gilbert inserted "It was Crap!"; Ken continued...; "No, he said it was Wonderful, just wonderful".... and it was. Thanks, Gilbert. Tony from Tewkesbury.
As far as I remember Gilbert was blacklisted by all the record companies when he took his label to court for the rights of his own music. He won his case and was then blacklisted.
I think I wore this 45rpm record out, I played it so much - absolutely love it! I want to download it but its not available on iTunes - anyone know where I can download it?
Gilbert doesn't mean the song will never be a hit, he means that many people will never understand the statement of the song. Still now nothing rhymes.
Gilbert deserves a tribute (Grammy Award or similar) for his ENORMOUS contribution to music. I love his songs, they are like good wines, better with time!!!!!
There's great truth in this heartbreaking song, but a truth that's nonetheless partial. We need never be entirely alone, however intense the feeling becomes. Loneliness is natural, a very real and mostly unavoidable part of life; but we can transcend it. It can happen when we identify ourselves too hard & too long with family/partners. But we're linked to everyone, to everything, to ourselves. That's the ultimate family, where all belong. In that sense loneliness is a powerful kind of illusion.
A towering piece of musical art. Melody, chord shifts, lyrics are all brilliantly distilled and the fact that the solo voice is enough to carry the song says everything about its structure. Absolutely love this.
@HardWarUK I never read the email, Stuart Maconie read it out on BBC Radio 2 when he had his Saturday afternoon radio show. You are probably right, he just didn't like his song played immediately after a hokey kokey song, something like a song you would hear at Butlin's Holiday Camp.

He sent an email to Stuart Maconie on BBC Radio 2 Saturday show complaining along this line...He seems to be a proud, stubborn guy who feels he never got enough acclaim.

a beatiful example of a poetic soul demanding the right to be a square peg in a round hole, and a meditation on all of our,s inability to alter the world notwithstanding our desire to do so. the juxtaposition between human excess and catastrophic want in the second stanza is particularly moving. the guy really had soul-someone who would stop and kiss the wounded... a little treasure
Wow. His songs have great major-minor shifts - their built on these patterns, with some crazy jazz chords. His talent is so inspiring... He seems to be a proud, stubborn guy who feels he never got enough acclaim. More power to him! If only his recent albums were easier to get in the US. They're available only as imports.
Our Ray, did find a way for folks to take notice. Now at 64 years old, the guy still works 9 months of the year composing, studying all types of music. He still has his muse. The latest from the man is fantastic. Let's all thank him for his love of his craft. All the Best to ya Ray...
@ducksurprise You are sooo so right... It is right up there with classics like 'Your Song' by Elton John and Simon and Garfunkel's 'Bridge Over Troubled Waters ' no doubt about it....
Gilbert O'Sullivan's songs are perfectly harmonized. The very first time I heard this song I only had to listen to the first line and I could sing along with the rest.
@sean082559 I'm a diehard MACCA fan, They say when I was young & pretty I looked like him, I'd say no, sometimes He looks like me...that said...what Paul attempted and did quite well...Gilbert O' Sullivan Hit it on the Mark, and no one has ever come even close. loved the song, but 41 years later I still don't know what on earth the song's meant to be about. Any ideas?

My daughter said, " Is that Kermit the frog singing or the guy who does his voice?"
I just looked up and though about it and shook my head no.
Personally I love the song. He himself said that he sang off key or something like that.
