I was a teenager when when this song hit the charts and I remember liking it but not telling my mates (cos it wasn't cool to be into Gilbert) although his tank tops (wooley vest) and flat cap became fashionable.I listen to his music so much now and appreciate what a talented musician and songwriter he is. As far as I remember Gilbert was blacklisted by all the record companies when he took his label to court for the rights of his own music. He won his case and was then blacklisted.

Wow. His songs have great major-minor shifts - their built on these patterns, with some crazy jazz chords. His talent is so inspiring...
