I think the books are great literature - but there are a LOT of differences between the series and the books. Dexter doesn't really evolve in the books as much as he does on screen. He's also a bit darker and a little more psychotic, not so controlled. In the books, he cares little to nothing for Rita - and like in S4 - he essentially mocks what Trinity does, without the poor treatment of the family. There are other differences - but the treatment of Sho's Dexter is much better, imo.
