  • this song inspires me<3

  • this song is sooo beautiful

  • @WeknowhoUR umm hate to point this out but you cant spell

  • I go to Northern town, I love this song so much(:

  • These people rock!

  • This song reminds me of such better times when I was young! It takes me back to a time when things were simple and life was so sweet. The wonders of childhood and home comes into my thoughts as I listen to this. It makes me almost feel like I am back home and a kid again, with no pressures and life was good. Homesick, yeah, homesick, that is me. I love this and these guys are the best! Oh, if only we could go back in time, but one can never go home again! Bitter Sweet! <3 for these singers!

  • I can't help but laugh at you guys.. "Did it first, did it better..." and "butchering rock songs." I've been around a long time and have listened to a lot of music over the years. New generations and different genres adapt the great songs to their feel and message. I loved the original Dream Academy song, and this one is just as good - different and perfect in its own way.

  • @imhomike I agree. They did a nice rendition of this song.

  • @phil74501 No they just do it better

  • @phil74501 Didn't your mom ever teach you, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything?

  • jake owens must be the most beautiful man ever created ! And I love this song as well, But, I am old enough to remember the dream academy version, and owned the 45!

  • They forgot to mention Jake Owen in the title.

  • if you dont like this then you have no reason to listen to music, sugerland has a beautiful voice, all the little big town singers are just amazing and jake owens is great!!!

  • Amazing song!!!

  • It's a decent version of the song I'll give it that but it's missing something without the timpani and the oboe. That's what gives it the iconic sound that chills you down the spine. Plus, it's not really a song meant for the steal guitar. The original is so haunting about the deep freeze in the UK back in 1963 and the innocent hope the world had with icons like the Beatles and JFK.

  • i love this song(:

  • Yeah, I agree. This song just doesn't fit with country very well.

  • Shouldn't they be singing Life in a southern town?

  • hmm... well great artists in their own, but this version does not do the original justice. The country twang in their voices simply doesn't work, I'm sorry.

The entire thing is really saved by the fact that the original song is so beautiful, it's hard to mess up completely.

  • As much as Jennifer Nettles voice gets on my Nerves this really is a good cover.

  • Not bad! I like the original better but they did do an excellent job!

  • why isnt there more views!?

  • This is a cover version that can give the original a run for the money, but to each it's own.

  • l love Sugarland, but this as bad as if Alanis Morriset were to sing a Sugarland song in her alternative style. l'm sorry, but the original is so much better.

  • the people who saw this live were so lucky!

  • What aholes disliked this song, such losers.

  • @53nrockin No dude, not A Holes, just honest. This is okay, it's mildly enjoyable - Sugarland are great artists, but Hank Williams Jr. shouldn't try to do a Rod Stewart tune, and Dream Academy shouldn't try to cover Ozzy.

  • You realise Jake Owen is in here too eh?

  • THE GRAETEST SONG EVER!!!!!!!

  • Does anyone know if they ever recorded this in a studio? I love the song and think they did a good job with it, but i HATE listening to music recorded in front of an audience..

  • 1st time I heard this song was at the awards show, I loved it, can't get enough of it

  • This version works for me. I think Sugarland and company did a good job on this cover of The Dream Academy's Life in a northern town. Some people just get stuck on the original version and can't see (or hear) anyone else doing the song.

  • i love Sugarland, but dear God in heaven, this is terrible.

  • Not a bad cover. It loses a bit of its dreamy atmosphere. But again, not a bad cover.

  • great song!!!

  • I finally found the best and clearest version of Sugarland and Little Big Town singing "Life in a Northern Town". Thank you Jennie11041992 video taped March 3, 2009.

  • Like both versions. Great music with great musicians, you can't go wrong. IMHO.

  • You all are idiots with no taste great song and great performance of it. if you dont like it nobody cares go talk about the enviorment and ither useless crap with your yankee friends.

  • How can you dislike a beautiful song like this, so well written and performed

  • @JBertolozzi I'd rather hear the original personally. Not a good cover at all.

  • OMG! Why did they have to butcher this song? Dream Academy has to be scratching their head wondering, "Why". I know I am. I thought I liked Sugarland, but here you suck!

  • i love this. they all sound good together, very lyrical, and all the musicians seem to be having fun!!! that jake own has the prettiest man-smile ;) lol!!

  • This is a RIPOFF to The Dream Academy the true version is by that band. All country music sucks compared to any British Music. Way to wreck a song Sugarland, you made me puke listening to this.

  • Death to country. :)

  • they all sound good together...little big town has always been my favorite band and along with the voices of sugarland and jake owen...i wud kill to see these guys all in concert together!!!!

  • I think a lot of people would be freaked out when they realize the original Dream Academy version was produced by Pink Floyd's David Gilmour. The whole album was incredible. A nice job by Sugarland pulling this off.

  • @TheElwoodBluez why am i not surprised about the David Gilmour thing?

  • @doodly2BetterThanEvr Because you know that David Gilmour is a "God" in the music business.

  • 11 people suck

  • @tugboat0970

    And for free too!

  • I love this song and the video

  • AMAZING! <3 love itttt

  • This sound makes life worth living, thank you!

  • good one i like it;;;;

  • That was AWESOME!!!

  • Fantastic cover version of this song.

But this video reminds me of a freakin' clown car... The singers just keep coming and coming and coming.....

  • ..

  • one of my favorite songs of all time and these guys just made it even more special

when i was a teenager this song (and a few others) got me through some tough times

    way to go, great preformance

  • look up the original by dream academy, it is a vision of life in a northern town in england where povery is rife but the northern british spirit prevails in the face of adversity, ift could be an anthem for all of englade during every decade of th epast 50 years terry an english 50 something so i should know.

  • 9 people hate the simple times

  • amen.

  • This sounds like garbage with country singers. People with deep southern accents, fake or not, should not be singing this song.

  • I like this! I love the original (I would, it's from my time) but this is a sympathetic remake. The downtempo feel, the use of different vocalists for different parts is nice, and the vocal harmonies are really nice too. Very good!

  • Sorry, but this version is garbage -- It lacks all the finesse and little touches of character in the Dream Academy's original recording from almost 30 years ago, which I remember. The vocals are all wrong -- no ebb and flow, and I CAN'T STAND Jennifer Nettles.

Perfect example of what crap commercial country-pop can do to good music. MoobieNews may have been a little crude in his comment, but the sentiment is spot on.

  • @Straitsfan u wouldnt know good music if it slapped u in the face

  • Nice video. However, most people viewing this are young and don't know it's a remake of a song of a 70's band from Britain, The Dream Academy, The female in Sugartown is from Douglas , Georgia which is in the middle of nowhere and is way red-neck.

  • @mickbrian1231 Georgia has also big parts like Alanta its not all redneck.

  • @MrEagle2par Thank you! Haha. i'm from GA and I am most def not a redneck(:

  • @mickbrian1231 The original is from the mid 80's, not the 70s..

  • Learning to shag dance to this song for competition. Never danced for competition before. Wish us luck. Especially me

  • This is REAL music!

  • @TheCountryLife2010 No not really, imho real country music is not a cover song from the 80's. Although this one was good, Dream Academy did it better...and first

  • @TheCountryLife2010 No not really, imho real country music is not a cover song from the 80's. Although this one was good, Dream Academy did it better...and first

  • joey in lexington was great ron in paducah ky love you all

  • love you all seen you all in cape girardeau mo ron and dawn

  • Could be in the Southern Hemisphere, where the accents are reversed....

  • Anyone else feeling the intense irony of a song called "Life in A Northern Town" being sung in deep Southern accents?

  • @cmurphy2826 Agreed. But I LOVE it. I like genre-busting anything, especially when it shows people that not all country (or not everything that sounds country is crap.) Also, I think the disconnect between the accent and the 'Northern town' phrase matches nicely with the lyrics - about disconnection and confusion and trying to figure it all out.

  • Jake Owen is such a babe ;D

  • there are three bands in this song sugarland ,little big town ,and Jake owen

  • there are three bands in this song sugarland ,little big town ,and Jake owen

  • Isn't it considered COMPLIMENTARY when a band does a cover of someone else's song? I always thought so. After hearing this video, I went and found the original by Dream Academy and it's wonderful. There seems to be a certain amount of 'America bashing' whenever an American band does a remake of a Brittish song. IMHO, this video is an excellent tribute to the original and it looked like everyone had a BLAST during rehearsals. I can't wait to hear Sugarland play this one on tour this summer.

  • POS! Kountry remake of a classic. Please!!! No talent, synthesized voices = sucks.

Watch the original version and see real talent.

  • Does anyone know when and where this was recorded?

  • Reminds me of Springsteins, (probably spelled that one wrong) My Home Town

  • Egad.

  • Beautiful =)

  • I think their harmony was at least as good as the original. Now that's some AWESOME vocals there! I'm a HUGE fan of Sugarland, and now I'm a fan of Little Big Town, too. They did a GREAT job on this remake. This live version is also on Sugarlands "Love On The Inside" CD. Jennifer Nettles is FANTASTIC!!

  • They actually did a good job on this remake.

  • This song is actually written as a tribute to Nick Drake, one of the greatest songwriters of all time. I wonder if any of the members of sugarland or little big town realize this?

  • Totally awesome remake and video of that song!!

  • This is one kick ass video and they did one heck of a good job with that song!

  • Ummm no offense but Sugarland is from Georgia and yes they have gotten some snow.............But WTF would they know about life in a northern town! Shoveling Ice,snow,ice,snow..........3 days a darn week?

  • @Msjessbcuz10 The original song was written by the Dream Academy, a band from the UK. This song is about growing up in Northern England.

  • this song was written for and about nick drake by a group in the 80s called the dream academy

  • @hugsxox91 sure i know who they are...i just couldn't really follow the story in the song

  • Awesome!

  • It's a remake, and a very well done one

  • it brings life to both the orig. and sugar land so stfu and enjoy it if you cant then, take your negative attitude and bounce LOOOSER!!!!!!!

  • The song is about Nick Drake...British singer/songwriter, guitarist... committed suicide in his 20's I believe.

  • what a load of crap, typical american tosh ruining some great british song, completely loses the soul and sentiment of a northern british feeling, complete and utter bollocks

  • So, who or what are they talking about? Always wanted to know...

  • Sometimes a song comes along and gains a following not only for the words and music, but also for the way it sounds. This song was memerizing in 1985 and still holds it's luster today. Thanks DA for recording it first and SL,BT and JO for making it a classic.

  • Great version of an awesome song about the plight of the British in the 50's and 60's, and this is coming from an American.

  • I worked back stage when they were in Dayton,Ohio they were very nice to meet and talk with I hope to meet them again some day

  • Well spoken LasVegasJim. This (the DA version) was one of the first 45's (yep, I'm 40!) that I ever bought. Along with some other greats such as "Da Da Da" and "It's Raining Again". Somehow this is the only single I wish I could still listen to repeatedly. To find this absolutely brilliant remake has made my night. The only thing missing is the big tympani (sp?) run up to the final chorus. I assume that wasn't country enough...

  • AMAZING rendition of this long time favorite! Well Done!

  • wonderful song!

  • Jake owen came to school and sang it was so amazing, and i have loved his music ever since!!! he is sooo AMAZING!!!!! and so FLIPPINN HOT!!!!!!!!!

  • its an awesome remake of an awesome song

  • They are awesome at singing this song and I love THE SONG!

  • now what i think is that sugarland and Little Big Town should do more songs together!

  • the name of the original group was THE DREAM ACADEMY and it was a ok song by them. the first time I heard it was live and I loved it from then on. I do remember the original and while I normally prefer it - this is an awesome version...

  • The problem with this cover is that the soprano vocal is not really coming across so the melody is sounding a little flat.

The female alto vocal is a little too strong.

  • I normally just keep my thoughts to myself,but...I just have had it with all the judgemental, wannabe critics of ethics and music...Las Vegas Jim...Clarity and soul? in a STUDIO version of a song? PLEASE....a dog could make a decent sounding record in a studio. It is what's done live that counts.Furthermore, regarding the folks that covered this song not having an "understanding" of 1963U.K., well how many Brit bands got famous by covering black blues greats songs?

  • @bjiintx I am sorry if I sounded like an effete prick. The DA also performed this LIVE on SNL on 12.21.1985. They are skilled musicians, not simply studio geeks. Many folks have covered Elvis, James Brown, Sinatra, etc. I respect Sugarland as a 21st Century Southern USA band. The DA is the real deal who told of 1980’s Northern UK. That’s all. Both bands speak to their understanding of their times. Best wishes.

  • Not bad at all......... nothing like the studio version done by DA but still very good for live........ if they didnt redo vox which they prob did. Points for doing the song though.

  • thanks for postin

  • A great version of this great song, it is sung beautifully.

  • Sadly, this cover has none of the genuine clarity and soul of the Dream Academy. I doubt if any of them were even alive in "the winter of 1963." They have no gut understanding of 1985 in Northern UK. The real deal is when musicians draw upon their own times and life experiences. My humble advice to Sugarland and Little Big Town is to "take it easy on yourself" and get real with yourself.

  • @LasVegasJim

You believe the Sugarland (et al) version lacks soul; this is your opinion, and is valid as such. However, keep in mind that the members of Dream Academy were approximately 6 years old in the winter of '63. Just how much of a "gut understanding" of that time do you suppose they had? LOL

  • @MomToLabs I respectfully appreciate your comment. My point is that a USA-southern-focused group could certainly duplicate the technical sound, but not the genuine soul of this 1980's UK song. The Dream Academy did not "know" 1963 USA John F. Kennedy or the Beatles. True. It is similar to Billy Joel doing a cover of Ray Charles. Dream Academy was original. Please... Sugarland, Little Big Town, Jack Owen, et.al. be original to whom you are. LOL and very best wishes.

  • Thank god for you tube. It means I can immediately cleanse my memory of this horrific cover by listening to the original, I mean they're singing in american accents about life in a british northern town, didn't they get ANYTHING about the meaning behind the song ?!? argh.

  • @owenooh Sugarland/Little Big Town have never claimed to be the originators of this song. Why can't people just shutup and enjoy the music

  • who's the brunette dancing with the otwo guys in the dressing room shots? She's hot

  • To today's young SugarLand crowd, you probably think this is a good song--and it is well done--but to those who remember hearing it on the radio in the 80's by The Dream Academy, it can't compare to the strong memories the original conjures.

  • life in the sixties the best!

  • This song was originally performed by dream academy in the early eighties and it just about life growing up in a northern town in the 50s and 60s.

  • Love this better than the original! And the original was pretty good!

  • The best remake ever. It still brings tears to my eyes.

  • i'm a little lost here; should i know who they're talking about in the song? isn't this supposed to be like a remake or something?

  • @CHRISTIANCOUNTRYGAL its a remake

  • @jennie11041992 okay, thanks everybody!! :)

  • @jennie11041992 Of an ABBA song I believe

  • @nanapolly65 Dream Academy

  • @CHRISTIANCOUNTRYGAL - - - The Dream Academy, a British folk band, released the original version in 1985. It reached #7 on the Billboard charts. I remember listening to it as a kid, liked it then, love the Sugarland cover.

  • @CHRISTIANCOUNTRYGAL this Song was originally Done by a Group called Sound Academy. This is by far a better rendition of the song, although I am very particular to Choosing the original of songs, this one got me

  • @CHRISTIANCOUNTRYGAL Dream Academy wrote this as a tribute to the English singer-songwriter Nick Drake, back in 1985.

  • Comment removed

  • @CHRISTIANCOUNTRYGAL It is a remake of a song that came out in 1985. The song is talking about being a small child and growing up in the sixities. It is life through the eyes of a child when life was innocent.

  • love the harmony

  • My mother LOVES this song

  • @maxandjade your mother has good taste

  • I am so glad you posted this video! I love their rendition of this song! Thanks!

  • da best song ever

  • its awsome!!!!

  • love it! <3
