it does block airflow, but in doing so, creates a cushion of air in the bed that actually helps aerodynamics. think of it as a high pressure air system in the bed and low pressure system flowing over it. air trapped in bed allows flow of air to travel over and off the back of the truck. with no tailgate, this cant happen as air is no longer trapped and flows out the back of the truck, requiring it be replaced with air coming over the top. hard to explain, but thats it in rough terms

test seem to show it hinders rather than helps. hurts aerodynamics but does remove about 50 lbs.
