  • But karate punches don't focus all on BOOM! power. A karate punch uses all physics, we're loose until we strike, then we tighten everthing at point of impact, then release all tension. Most boxers are the ones that follow through with haymakers and and punches that require large windups and larger range of motion for their strength?

  • So we are to take it that you are implying Tae Kwon Do stylists dont punch? Why is it everytime i see a vid about fighting theory theres always an armchair expert with his fingers permenently attached to his keyboard and one foot firmly in his mouth making assinine comments ? are there really that many insecure people out there...guess so.

  • omg he is so smart and fine as hell....

  • and this kids why the change in the momentum is equal to the product of force and change in time of impact

  • boring

  • Tae Kwon Do punch? Hahaha yeah right.

  • @Roperious that what i was gonna say... no such thing

  • @Roperious tae kwon do punches exist...

  • @Roperious kids dnt know tae kwon do has full contact hand to hand style?

  • @Roperious their punces are very powerful

  • I kept on thinking if you're Glen Levy i saw in National Geographic Fight Science.

  • This is very interesting. What's your opinion on focusing energy onto the smallest possible point? This thing I like to do (no formal martial arts training mind you :)

Imagine clenching your fist with the exception that you straighten the long finger knuckle while supporting it by the nail with your thumb creating a very small sharp yet stable point. Just a short twitch usually drops anyone in my experience if you place it correctly. Preferably in the solar plexus.

  • we still need recovery when we sneeze... just saying.

  • You mean impulse not impact.

  • he's cute

  • so this prevents a crook body after a fight>?

  • It's very refreshing to see the introduction of the finer details of the classical martial arts brought into the realm of mixed martial arts. It's part of the progressive dialectic of fight science. Early MMA made everyone scoff at the traditionalists, but there is something that can be learned and applied from every system. Thanks for sharing.

  • i agree ,, some expert martial artis can throw a big heavy but fast punch without doing to many movement .. its need training and understanding how to do it ..

  • @Zulu9ner constant training. i'm in a crisis now because my dojo closed down and everything else around here is too damned soft. i even went to the mma place in town. and they were softer. i guess sensie tsuki didn't have all those old masters around cause he had good jokes.

  • how can you increase your output of force in your punches?

  • @merclessmurder move your body weight with your punch, let your body drive your punch. then exactly on impact, for just a second tense every muscle in your body( it prevents recoil if done correctly. you can even use it to cause you're opponents punch to recoil into them. but it takes allot of specialized training and the only dojo i know that did it( the one i went to) is closed).

  • @thmsvrgs Sorry... I think you are describing yourself wanking off mate!!

  • @ONENIGGER2ANOTHER how did you get that from this? they're completely unrelate. maybe if i used the word " hard, fast," or the phrase" with with plenty of lube" your zinger would make sense. so far i'm just confused and proturbed. i was hoping to find something funny and provacative about your comment. now i'm just disappionted.

  • @merclessmurder ps. the more relaxed and loose you are before impact the more power you'll get. fluidity is the key

  • is this the idea behind the one inch punch?

  • @chbedok creating energy and sending all of it into the other person, not alowing it to recoil back into you. it takes allot of muscle control and coordination.

  • haha rather its your palm, your fist, or a hammer loll

  • @ascitiesburn2001

He was referring to the bottom (pinky side) of your fist. It's called a hammer fist. He used a hammer fist to deliver a death blow on a crash test dummy

  • Hi, i have been studding karate for an number of years. I am a 2dan. I was wondering if you could go into more detail on the hips. and what the rest of you body is doing as you strike.

  • This is awesome. Sounds so simple but requires dedication.

    Relaxing is the secret.

    Great post.

    Thanx,

  • This is interesting. My roommate has trained in various martial arts for 11 years and I've just been a scrappy street fighter interested in martial arts. So we get on the topic and spar, but he notices that when I punch, I stay tense. he tells me to stay relaxed throughout the entire punch up until the moment of impact, and only then tense the punch and immediately release.

Kinda neat to have an affirmation on this.

  • To achieve a KO or, or do any serious damage to the body, you have to punch through your opponent. You've got to really dig for oil, when going for the liver or spleen, otherwise there's not enough penetration.

I can assure you that he didn't use this sort of technique when he mangled his elbow breaking ice.

Round the sides (jaw), short, snappy punches can put an opponent away, but you still have to follow through and really rotate the head.

  • @MAS4T0 I'm not sure what you're talking about as far as breaking ice since I did not see that video, but I must agree with you on hitting through your opponent. Most people don't realize that the liver and spleen are really embedded in the body... you must hit swift and hard if you're really trying to damage them, especially if you're trying to do it with one shot.

  • @DemonDog6661

It really is all about hitting through your opponent. It's the same with all punches (other than the jab if only using it for ranging). Hooks, uppercuts and crosses are completely useless without follow through.

Same goes for kicks. Semi-contact kickboxing is probably the best example of this. The kicks are thrown quickly, and often with a fair bit of momentum behind them, but as they stop on impact (no follow through), no-one gets hurt.

  • at first when he started talkin bout karate and shit i was like fuk this but when he said the mma and boxing transports are the best and talked about the sinking i kinda liked

  • That's not to say momentum isn't useful. Knockout are caused by snapping somebody's head really fast.

  • hey you are also thrax??? hahaha thats awesome

  • hey glen u rock, ive see you at nat geo and i think in your elbow video also apears the taekwondo guy, i dont remember his name now, but hes grat too, keep on man. From peru

  • @DeadHogMusic he is a pure clown, how a brainless idiot like that can get a job on a science program is unbelieveable.

  • @billysue2 I can't believe we actually agree on this!

    But you still a BITCH!!

  • Yep thats New Zealand for you. The tree is called a Pohutukawa

  • demonstration plz.

  • Mr. Levy, Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I now fully understand the right way to punch. The "sneeze" analogy made a whole lot of sense.

  • were you the guys that demonstrated in teh NGC Fight Science episode?

  • Hey, that is like a HADOUKEN in streetfighter :) Fa jing, Quigong, energy that only waits to be harvested.

  • Haha so true!

  • Thank you for taking the time to share this very insightful martial arts knowledge. Definitely 5 stars and a favorite!

  • Glen Levy, from New Zealand is a Hollywood stuntman and has black-belts in many different martial arts...he also featured on History Channels 'Fight Science' as a Ninjitsu Master and apparently has the world record for the most powerful hand strike with his 'Hammer Fist' at nearly 12000psi...ten times more powerful than a Mike Tyson punch!

  • My mistake...actually nearly 13000psi!

  • Comment removed

  • 12898 to be exact :)

I got the video where he says so.

    Tyson= 1200psi

    Lee= 2000psi

    Levy= 12898

The NGC even admitted these numbers :D.

  • can u link me to those numbers? just curious

  • Sadly, the NGC doesnt have it lsited anymore :(.

The numbers are still lsited in a video which i can PM you the link :).

  • Are you from NewZealand?

  • Yea he is

  • Holy shit,I get a negative 1 for guessing his accent was from New Zealand. What a bunch of loser puppies thats all I can say. These arm chair keyboard warrior puppies will give a negative any comments

  • very well explained mate.nice one. hey just a quicky..try this,,if you do your 'sneeze'(empty breath) just before impact you will find it will give even more power into your target. try it .. this is one application Mr Russell Stutely teaches in the O.C.F.M..

  • I'm in mixed martial arts, this is good to know. Thanks ninja dude. Maybe you can send me a training circuit for ninjutsu, they don't have it up north, no ninja will dwell here.
