HI!! i REALLY ENJOYES WATCHING THIS VIDEO. I'VE GOT A QUESTION...WE WANT TO MAKE A BOWL ABOUT 10 INCHES SO, IS IT POSSIBLE TO MAKE IT OR IS THERE ANY DANGER WHEN TURNING? ALSO, I WANTED TO KNOW WHAT WERE YOU USING( THAT CAN YOU HAD ON THE LATHER) FOR CLEANING, POLISHING OR SANDIND DOWN THE WOOD. THANKS!
I know this is an older video, but I'm amazed that the hot glue will hold. I just got a mini lathe at Christmas and just picked up a 4-jaw chuck and ended up throwing a small piece I was trying to make a bowl out of across the roo m. Took every bit of confidence I had acquired making little odds and ends.
hi great video , im a new in all this , so i have no idea, just asking what kind of wax you use, is there a special wax or what, thanx. Greatings from spain.
Hi carl im just getting in to woodturning i would be very greatfull if you could give me some tips on using the finger nail gauge have you turned any english wood before as we have some great wood over hear Thank Yoe Neil Vaughan
what kind of mixture do you use for sanding? Wax and mineral oil? And in what percentage? Thank you, I like your vids... They are source of inspiration
I've never turned wood before but since I discovered your videos you have inspiered me to get a lathe and attempt to make some of the beautiful piece's that you have made.
I think my favourites so far, and the first things i'm going to try are the key ring and the larger tea light candle holders.
Please keep posting videos and continue making beauitful piece's
Does your green wood turnings crack? I have been experimenting, and have it where it will warp a little but usually doesn't crack, would like it if not warp either!

Very nice natural edge "bark bowl". I've tried using the waste block technique a few times but haven't had much luck. The piece just pops off no matter how light my cuts are. Do you know anything I could try?
G'day again Carl, many thanks for your concern regards flooding here, we have missed the worst of the devastation in our part of Aust, but Queensland has suffered great losses. Looking forward to seeing your scoop project on your site.
G'day Carl, just wanted to say hi and thanks for all your vids on turning projects. It's great to see a comtepent turner produce A1 quality work with basic tools, although a very broad range & selection of chisels an gouges to choose from. Have you ever turned scoops on your lathe? They are great gift ideas and very useful items in the kitchen. Keep up the great work and videos. Blessings to you and your family from Acacia + in Corowa Australia.
how do you insure that the bark stays on the wood.it seems that all the logs in my wood pile have lost there bark it just falls off when i pick up the log. any help would be great
Great video Carl, I am trying to do the little natural edge bowl after seeing yours, we have Willow trees in our yard and thought about trying a limb from that,
hey thanks for all the great vids i love em and because of you i got a lathe for christmas!!! but i need a chuck so i can make some bowls what do you reccomend and where can i get one thanks
great vid carl! just got my first lathe this christmas(you certainly partly inspired me to try the craft out). it's been great so far, i've just made a bowl and want to make another! keep em' coming!
A friend of mine gave me a piece of 5 inch diameter ash to work with. I turned it as you did, a natural edge bowl. For a base, I cut a slice about 1/2 inch thick with the bark on the outter edge and glued the bowl to it, adds a nice touch. You do great work and you have inspired me to get back into my shop and TURN!
@haydenHD Snow...disappeared in 3 days and left a trail of destruction - frozen pipes, empty reservoirs and a huge headache for water services. Temperatures went from -2F to 50F in 4 days so it feels like Spring now. This is a mad place I live in.
You don't need to thank us, Carl. We thank YOU! Your vids are practical and entertaining (especially when it's too cold for me to go turn in my own garage!) Thanks for all the work you put into this!
@haydenHD just wondering, i was turning a small walnut bowl with pith in it, it ended up breaking before i finished, but i was curious what the outcome would have been. thanks for the info
Great Santa and Daughter photo, thanks for another great show. I have a branch about that size I got out of my late grandfathers shop and have been waiting for a good idea for it, will give the bowl a try and thanks for the heads up about the sanding because I would have lost a figure tip on that one :). I have learned a lot from you, Happy New Years to you and your family.
Hey Carl, need to figure out how to get pictures on my page for you to see, have not worked everything out with my camera yet. I have only been turning for about 6 months, and my little bowl looks a lot like yours but in several pieces now. I got part of the wall too thin and it blew apart. But that is okay this to is a learning tool.

@Hitomi3138
Woodturning can be dangerous, so make sure your piece is secure on the lathe. I am using paste wax and mineral oil mixed together in the can.
Take care,
Carl

Is it better to have thin walls or thick?
TeamRealTreeBronco15 1 month ago
@TeamRealTreeBronco15 It depends on what you're going to do with the piece. If it's functional the walls should be thicker than a decorative piece.

Green wood will warp a little while it is drying. It is hard to stop it. Maybe turn it a little thick allow to dry and then finish.
Thanks,
